Power ministry officials call for new Discos, Gencos

Top government officials in the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing rose from their management meeting in Owerri, calling for new entrants into the electricity distribution and generation industry.

They advocated the review of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s extant licences and regulations governing the operations of power generation and distribution companies so as to accommodate new entrants to increase competiveness and performance in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.

In a communiqué made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Monday, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, said that the ministry had also secured the approval of the Federal Executive Council for standardised maintenance of public buildings.

According to the communiqué, the top officials also encouraged the technical departments in the Ministries Departments Agencies to develop a programme to engage interns with a view to giving them practical work experience with stipends paid to them without contravening the provisions of the Public Service Rules.

They “noted that sustaining national prosperity was dependent on the entrenchment of transformational governance and favourable socio-political and secured environment.”

They also advocated for policies that would mainstream gender issues such as providing a longer and realistic period of maternity leave to promote breast feeding, protection from sexual harassment and gender discrimination in the public service.

They added that corruption was a hydra-headed monster and a major obstacle to actualising good governance confronting the service which required collective efforts to eliminate corruption in the interest of the generality of the citizenry.
