A UNICEF/DFID`s intervention project, the Sanitation, Hygiene and Water in Nigeria (SHAWN ll), had certified 265 communities in Zamfara Open Defecation Free.

The Programme Manager of the state Rural and Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, Alhaji Sani Gurbinbore, disclosed this to newsmen in Gusau on Monday.

He said the communities were from the three local government areas participating in the programme.

He said the local government areas and numbers of their certified communities are, Talata-Mafara 108, Birnin-Magaji 62 and Tsafe 95, adding up to 265 communities.

He said, ‘‘Our team of experts including state, local government task force committees and community laid total sanitations implementation teams went round the 265 communities participating in the programme.

‘‘After a thorough investigation and scrutiny, the teams discovered that on the average, every household in these communities constructed pit latrines with hand washing materials and cover drops.

‘‘The teams also did not record instances of open defecation unlike in the past and that showed that the communities have stopped Open Defecation.”

According to him, an end to open defecation will reduce water and environment-related diseases in rural communities.

He urged the certified communities to intensify efforts toward maintaining their status to enable the country to attain the Sustainable Development Goal on water and sanitation.

He also appealed to the people in the non-participating local government areas to desist from open defecation due to inherent dangers to human health.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Zamfara is one of the six states participating in the programme in the country.
