Insecurity: Don’t pit Senate against Tinubu, Akpabio warns minister

The Senate leadership on Thursday cautioned the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, against making public statements that could create friction between the National Assembly and the executive led by President Bola Tinubu.

The warning came after Badaru publicly dismissed a planned two-day national security summit by the Senate, stating that such gatherings were unnecessary in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.

Speaking at plenary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele criticised the minister’s comments, warning that such remarks could undermine legislative initiatives and strain relations with the Presidency.

At a ministerial briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Badaru had said the armed forces were already better equipped and more sophisticated than insurgents, and emphasised that effective strategy, not summits, was the key to national security.

“Strategy is far more important than a summit,” the minister said. “The summit will give input for the strategy, but operational orders come from the Defence Chiefs, not from public discourse.”

Reacting, Akpabio expressed disappointment, stating that open criticism of the Senate’s resolutions could worsen the already dire security situation.

“If the Ministry of Defence has any issue with any Senate resolution, it should not address it in the marketplace,” Akpabio said. “It should reach out to the Senate President or Senate elders. Such public remarks could lead to unnecessary executive-legislative conflict.”

Akpabio commended the 10th Senate for staying focused on national priorities despite distractions.

Earlier, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele described the minister’s remarks as demoralising and unhelpful.

“We are elected to work for the people and support the President’s agenda. But when we are falsely portrayed or publicly undermined, it becomes difficult to build synergy,” Bamidele said.

He added, “That the Minister of Defence could describe a Senate-backed national security summit as unnecessary is troubling. Summits may not be perfect, but they remain critical avenues for gathering diverse perspectives to inform strategic decisions.”

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives on Thursday called on President Tinubu to order the deployment of additional security personnel to Plateau State, following recent attacks on Bokkos and Bassa local government areas.

The call followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance jointly sponsored by lawmakers Ishaya Lalu and Daniel Ago.

Lalu decried the repeated violence and mass killings in Jos and surrounding communities, stating that the recent attacks have left many dead, thousands displaced, and livelihoods destroyed.

“These incidents represent a troubling pattern of violence in Plateau State that has persisted for years, despite previous interventions,” Lalu said. “The situation has resulted in a worsening humanitarian crisis, with inadequate relief and support for displaced persons.”

The motion, when put to a voice vote by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, received overwhelming support.

The House urged the President to immediately deploy additional security forces to the affected areas to prevent further bloodshed. It also called on the National Emergency Management Agency and the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons to supply relief materials, medical aid, and establish proper IDP camps.

Furthermore, the House mandated its Committees on National Security, Defence, and Police Affairs to investigate the root causes of the persistent attacks and submit a report with recommendations within four weeks.

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs was also tasked with developing a comprehensive rehabilitation plan to rebuild destroyed homes, schools, and healthcare facilities in the affected communities.

Reps urge FG to build more, upgrade NYSC orientation camps

The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to establish more permanent orientation camps and rehabilitate new ones to enhance the seamless participation of prospective corps members in the National Youth Service Corps scheme.

The resolution of the House followed the consideration of a motion on notice during Thursday’s plenary, moved by Mr Garba Muhmmad.

The lawmaker, while moving the motion, noted that the NYSC scheme annually trains thousands of youths across various learning institutions for three weeks, equipping them with necessary skills and knowledge for the service year.

According to him, the management of NYSC had once decried the state of the orientation camps across Nigeria, noting that the FG needs to do more in this regard.

He said, “The House is alarmed that some states lack orientation camps to accommodate and meet the increasing number of corps members deployed, while other states temporarily utilize secondary school buildings to accommodate prospective corps members.

“We are disturbed by the current dilapidated state of permanent orientation camps in the country, which is causing dissatisfaction due to inadequate facilities overstretching the existing facilities, leaving corps members with no options other than to be redeployed to neighbouring states for camping activities.

“The House is concerned that due to space limitations, Corps members frequently have to travel for longer periods after being deployed.”

Cognizant of the need for spacious, habitable orientation camps, with each camp accommodating at least 5,000 participants at a time across the states of the Federation;

Also cognizant of the need to ensure the provisions of the state-of-the-art facilities, build additional camps, to empower Nigerian Corp Members with life survival skills and strategies, ensuring sustainable development and evolutionary trends;

Members present at the plenary voted overwhelmingly in support of the motion when put to a voice vote by the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, who presided over the plenary.

Following the adoption of the motion, the House urged the FG to collaborate with state governments to construct additional camps and expand existing ones to accommodate at least 5,000 participants in each state of the federation.

It also urged the Federal Ministry of Youth, in collaboration with other stakeholders, to work out modalities to achieve the construction and expansion of NYSC orientation camps.

The House further mandated the Committees on Youth Development and Legislative Compliance to ensure compliance and report within four weeks for further legislative action.

Bill Gates to give away 99% of his fortune

Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates has disclosed intentions to give away nearly all of his $200 billion wealth, leaving only one per cent for himself, as he shuts down the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The Microsoft co-founder stated on Thursday in a post on his personal blog, Gates Notes, that the foundation, which is considered to be among the most significant charitable organisations globally, will close its doors by December 31, 2045.

“People will say a lot of things about me when I die, but I am determined that “he died rich” will not be one of them.

“There are too many urgent problems to solve for me to hold onto resources that could be used to help people,” he said.

He added, “That is why I have decided to give my money back to society much faster than I had originally planned. I will give away virtually all my wealth through the Gates Foundation over the next 20 years to the cause of saving and improving lives around the world. And on December 31, 2045, the foundation will close its doors permanently.”

In a chart shared in the blog post, Gates revealed that he plans to give away 99 per cent of his wealth by 2045, leaving just one per cent, or about $1.6 billion, for himself and his family.

Founded in 2000 with his now ex-wife, Melinda French Gates, the foundation has spent over $100 billion on global health, education, and poverty alleviation, helping to fund vaccine development, medical research, and emergency aid around the world.

He also notes a shift from the original plan.

“This is a change from our original plans. When Melinda and I started the Gates Foundation in 2000, we included a clause in the foundation’s very first charter: The organisation would sunset several decades after our deaths. A few years ago, I began to rethink that approach.

“More recently, with the input from our board, I now believe we can achieve the foundation’s goals on a shorter timeline, especially if we double down on key investments and provide more certainty to our partners,” he stated.

Daily Mail reports that the remaining one per cent of his fortune may ultimately go to his three adult children: Phoebe, Rory and Jennifer.

Outlining the foundation’s achievements, he said, “I am deeply proud of what we have accomplished in our first 25 years.

“We were central to the creation of Gavi and the Global Fund, both of which transformed the way the world procures and delivers lifesaving tools like vaccines and anti-retrovirals. Together, these two groups have saved more than 80 million lives so far. Along with Rotary International, we have been a key partner in reviving the effort to eradicate polio.

“We supported the creation of a new vaccine for rotavirus that has helped reduce the number of children who die from diarrhea each year by 75 percent. Every step of the way, we brought together other foundations, non-profits, governments, multilateral agencies, and the private sector as partners to solve big problems—as we will continue to do for the next twenty years.”

Despite decades of impact, the Gates Foundation has drawn criticism from some who say Gates holds too much sway over global health funding decisions.

But, in an interview with the Associated Press on Thursday, he remains unapologetic, saying, like any private citizen, he can choose how to spend the money he earns

“I think 20 years is the right balance between giving as much as we can to make progress on these things and giving people a lot of notice that now this money will be gone,” he said.

PDP slams Edo Speaker’s defection ‘comical’, calls Agbebaku APC loyalist

The Edo State Chapter of People Democratic Party on Thursday said the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku is a staunch APC loyalist, describing his Tuesday defection to the All Progressives Congress as comical.

Agbebaku, alongside two other PDP lawmakers, Sunny Ifada (Esan Central Constituency) and Yekini Idaiye (Akoko Edo I Constituency), formally defected to the APC, boosting the party’s strength in the 24-member assembly to 18 seats, while the PDP now holds just six.

The defection event also saw several PDP stalwarts and grassroots leaders cross over to the ruling party.

They included councillors from 17 local government areas, former Deputy Speaker Roland Asoro, former House Majority Leader, Nosa Nosayaba, and former PDP State Secretary, Gabriel Oloruntoba.

However, reacting to the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, in a statement by its chairman, Tony Aziegbemi said Tuesday’s stage-managed fanfare in Benin City was not news; it was merely the official coronation of what had become a public secret

The statement read, “The Edo State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party finds it laughable, indeed, comical, that the All Progressives Congress would roll out the drums to celebrate what it calls the “defection” of Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, when in truth, Agbebaku has long operated as a covert APC loyalist.

“Tuesday’s stage-managed fanfare in Benin City was not news; it was merely the official coronation of what had become a public secret.

“For months, Agbebaku has served the interests of the APC in both conduct and allegiance. What played out was nothing more than a desperate spectacle, designed to impress the President and APC national leadership, an illusion worthy of a David Copperfield performance.

“Let it be remembered that under Agbebaku’s leadership, and in collaboration with Monday Okpebholo and the Edo APC, duly elected local government council chairmen, overwhelmingly PDP members, were illegally suspended.

“Despite the expiration of that unconstitutional suspension, Agbebaku refused to reinstate them, acting with clear partisan bias. If ever there was evidence of his real political affiliation, this was it.”

Aziegbemi said Agbebaku’s formal alignment with the APC is a textbook case of political opportunism, motivated not by ideology or conviction, but by personal ambition and self-preservation, noting that the PDP remain unbothered as men who stand for nothing will always fall for anything.

He added, “Even more laughable is the APC’s claim that 17 council chairmen have defected to their party. This is pure fiction.

“We challenge the APC to name a single duly elected PDP chairman who has defected.

“The truth is that what they parade are political appointees and stooges illegally imposed on the councils, Okpebholo’s loyal hirelings, not the people’s elected representatives.

“We dare Okpebholo to release the names of the council chairmen that defected.

“The recent development, which he described as a “charade” is part of a broader strategy by the APC to create a false narrative of political dominance in Edo State, but the people there are politically astute and cannot be deceived by such theatrics.”

Aziegbemi urged the people of Edo to endure this holocaust period, for joy is coming, adding that the PDP remains focused, undeterred, and unwavering in its commitment to justice.

He said the party is pursuing all legal avenues to reclaim its stolen mandate from the brazenly manipulated September 2024 governorship election.

He called on members and supporters of the PDP to remain resolute, stay focused, united, and strong urging them not be distracted by the desperation of those who put personal gain above public good.

Tinubu bags chieftaincy title in Anambra

President Bola Tinubu has been conferred with the chieftaincy title of ‘Dike si mba Anambra’ by all the royal fathers from the 179 communities of Anambra State.

Tinubu was conferred with the title by the Chairman of Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Chidubem Iweka (Ogalagidi, Eze Iweka III), at the Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, on Thursday.

The President was in Anambra on a one-day working visit to commission some “legacy” projects completed by the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo’s administration.

Igwe Iweka, while conferring the chieftaincy title on the President, said, “This is a title from all the royal fathers in the 179 communities of Anambra State. The title is called ‘Dike si mba Anambra’, meaning ‘warrior from the Diaspora’, and it is in recognition of your good works across the country.

“We welcome you to Anambra, and we salute you for honouring our invitation. Your efforts in governance are positively impacting every nook and cranny of the country.

“With your efforts, we have seen critical infrastructure such as key roads that connect the Second Niger Bridge as well as other projects in our communities. May God continue to offer you more wisdom to steer the ship of governance.”

Tinubu, in his acceptance, thanked the traditional rulers for the chieftaincy title, saying, “Our diversity must lead to prosperity; we must work together to lead Nigeria. We must commit ourselves for the development of the country.

“I feel deeply honoured by the conferment of a chieftaincy title by the royal fathers of this state. Today is not only historic, but one which I will forever treasure for the rest of my life.”

Among the dignitaries at the event were the National Security Adviser, Alhaji Nuhu Ribadu; Ogun State governor, Chief Dapo Abiodun; Imo State governor, Hope Uzodimma; Abia State governor, Alex Otti; Enugu State governor, Peter Mbah; and Minister of Works, Dave Umahi.

The President commissioned the New State Government House, Governor’s Lodge, Solution Fun City, Emeka Anyaoku Institute for International Studies and Diplomacy, and At UNIZIK, Awka, among others.

Foreign herders behind attacks on Benue, Plateau communities – DHQ

The Defence Headquarters has attributed the recent spate of violent attacks on communities in Benue, Plateau, and other parts of the country to foreign herders who have infiltrated Nigeria through porous borders.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Markus Kangye, said the identities and languages of the assailants have helped security forces confirm that many of the attackers are not Nigerians.

He said, “Well , when you hear them talk in some instances , you will be able to decipher whether these people are from here or not. For instance, if I speak Hausa and my brother from the South East speaks Hausa, you’ll know that this Hausa is a borrowed one and Hausa language like any other language has different versions and intonations.

” If somebody from Sokoto for instance speaks Hausa and my friend from Katsina speaks Hausa you’ll notice some differences.

“The Hausa language we speak in Nigeria is different from that of Mali, Central Africa Republic and Ghana. ”

He added that apart from their language, their hair also showed they are not Nigerians.

“So when we arrest these herders and terrorists from the way they speak, it is clear and even from their hair, you will tell you that they are not from Nigeria.

“I think the only community in Nigeria that has hair similar to the Shuwa in the Sahel region is probably the Shuwa Arabs in Borno State but they don’t even have the same”, he said.

Kangye’s remarks come amid growing concerns over recurring attacks by armed herders on farming communities, which have left hundreds dead and thousands displaced in recent months. Many of the victims are now taking refuge in Internally Displaced Persons camps.

The Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, had earlier stated that foreign herders were exploiting the ECOWAS protocol on free movement to cross borders and unleash terror on local communities.

Kangye noted that while some Nigerian herders also get into conflict with farmers, the most violent incidents are largely driven by infiltrators.

He said, “One will also admit that many of those terrorising our people are foreigners even though some of them are also Nigerians.

“There are some herders that are Nigerians that also get involved in the process of rearing their cows then they encroach into these farms and then before you know it conflict ensued between the farmers and the farmers, and these are the issues we are trying to solve

“But know that most of the violence and incessant killings you are hearing in some parts of this country are perpetrated by mostly those that find their way into the country through our porous borders. ”

He called for stronger inter-agency collaboration to monitor Nigeria’s borders and ensure that all entrants are accounted for.

Highlighting the military operational success, Kangye announced the arrest of a notorious gunrunner and kidnapping kingpin, Buhari Umar, who has been terrorizing communities in Gombe, Bauchi, Plateau, and Kaduna States.

He said troops also apprehended a five-man kidnapping syndicate in Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

The suspects were identified as Hassan Mohammed, Saleh Sani, Idi Yusuf, Adamu Danmai, and Hassan Bello.

The military, according to Kangye, also neutralised scores of terrorists, including a wanted leader identified as Nkwachi Eze, also known as Onowu, who had been coordinating multiple attacks and kidnappings across the South East.

In April, he said troops rescued 173 kidnapped victims, while over 204 terrorists and their family members surrendered to Nigerian forces.

“A total of 430 suspected oil thieves and other criminals were also arrested. In operations targeting economic sabotage, troops of Operation DELTA SAFE foiled oil theft valued at over N1.93 billion in just one week.

“Items recovered included over 1 million litres of stolen crude oil, hundreds of thousands of litres of illegally refined petroleum products, and the destruction of 95 illegal refining sites, ” he added.

NCAA sanctions Kenya Airways over passenger rights violations

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has issued a formal letter of sanction to Kenya Airways following multiple violations of consumer protection regulations involving three passengers, including Gloria Omisore.

The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection of the NCAA, Michael Achimugu, made this announcement on his official X account on Wednesday night.

“According to the NCAA, the sanctions stem from the airline’s failure to uphold several key obligations, including the NCAA has sent a letter of sanction to the operator, Kenya Airways, over the cases of Gloria Omisore and two other passengers.

“The penalties are for consumer protection-related infractions including right to care, failure to provide full disclosure of terms of carriage, failure to respond to the Authority’s request, failure to process refund and compensation, and lost baggage.”

The letter sent outlines both financial penalties and specific remedial actions.

“In addition to the fine in line with the NCAA Regulations 2023, the airline has seven days to pay the refunds and compensation of 1000 special drawing rights to the affected passengers,” the NCAA made it clear that non-compliance will lead to more severe consequences.

“Failure to comply with the letter will attract stiffer penalties for the airline,” the authority warned.

Recall that in February 2025, the NCAA initiated enforcement actions against Kenya Airways following a widely publicized incident involving Nigerian passenger Gloria Omisore.

The controversy began when Omisore was flown from Lagos to Nairobi without the necessary France transit visa for her onward journey to Manchester.

This oversight led to her being stranded in Nairobi for a 17-hour layover, followed by an additional 10-hour wait.

During this period, Omisore, who was experiencing a medical condition, requested care but was reportedly met with inadequate assistance from the airline staff.

The NCAA noted that the airline issued a misleading statement about the incident, which the regulatory body rejected.

Achimugu said that the determination was for the airline to update its initial statement to reflect the facts of the case and noted that there has been no compliance.

US helicopter firm indicted in Wigwe’s death

The United States of America’s National Transportation Safety Board has linked the unfortunate helicopter crash that killed the former Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings Plc, Herbert Wigwe, alongside his family, to ‘pilot’s spatial disorientation.’

The NTSB report further indicted the helicopter company, accusing it of “inadequate oversight of its safety management processes.”

This was contained in the NTSB final report unraveling the reasons for the helicopter crash in February 2024.

A preliminary report earlier showed that the helicopter, registered as N130CZ, crashed while operating under visual flight rules in what ultimately became instrument meteorological conditions, requiring different flight protocols and instrumentation.

According to the report, investigators determined the “probable cause of this accident to be: The pilot’s decision to continue the visual flight rules flight into instrument meteorological conditions, which resulted in the pilot’s spatial disorientation and loss of control.”

The crash, which occurred near the California-Nevada border on February 9, 2024, claimed the lives of all six people on board, including Wigwe, his wife Doreen, their son Chizi, and Abimbola Ogunbanjo, former Group Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group Plc.

The US accident investigators further reveal that the helicopter company failed to ensure pilots properly completed flight risk analyses, recorded maintenance issues, and followed required regulations before departure.

“The pilot likely experienced spatial disorientation while maneuvering the helicopter in IMC [instrument meteorological conditions], which led to his loss of helicopter control and the resulting collision with terrain,” the report stated.

Significantly, the investigation showed that the helicopter’s radar altimeter was non-functional prior to the fatal flight.

The report detailed that during an earlier flight, the pilot had texted the maintenance director about an issue with this critical instrument.

“A company mechanic performed some troubleshooting on the radar altimeter; however, he was unable to rectify the issue, and the radar altimeter remained non-functional.

“The mechanic reported that the pilot and the DOM [director of maintenance] were aware that the radar altimeter was not functioning, yet they departed at 1822 on the positioning flight to pick up the passengers,” the report noted.

The investigation further found that after arriving to collect the charter passengers, the pilot and flight follower exchanged messages but “did not discuss the status of the radar altimeter or weather conditions.”
