Afenifere Speaks On Joining IPOB To Shut Down Nigeria For One Month

Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere has rejected the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB’s call to jointly shut down Nigeria for one month.

IPOB is reported to have threatened to direct Igbo people living in different parts of Nigeria to observe a one-month sit-at-home order if the Nigerian government failed to produce its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, in court for trial on October 21st.

The Igbo group had also urged the Middle Belt and Oduduwa Nation agitators to join its members in the demonstration.

Afenifere has, however, said it would not take part in the sit-at-home exercise as agitated by the Biafrans.

A highly placed Afenifere chieftain who reportedly spoke exclusively with DAILY POST said shutting down Nigeria is not part of its agenda. The South-Western indigene who pleaded not to be mentioned said Afeniefere should not be dragged into such a move to shut down Nigeria.

“I always show solidarity but we will never be part of shutting down Nigeria for one month.

“That is not part of our agenda; If it’s worthy for them, they can shut down the country, but they should not mention us in that kind of thing.

“We don’t want to be part of it because it is certainly not our agenda. We are not in the business of shutting down the country,” Daily Post quoted the Afenifere chieftain as saying.

Meanwhile, the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has been issued a stern warning against spreading its wings to the Northern part of the country.

Naija News reports that the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, AYCF, issued the warning to counter the Biafra agitators’ call that the Middle Belt should join in shutting down Nigeria.

Senate Confirms Buhari’s Nominee Who ‘Started Schooling A Year Before He Was Born

Senate Confirms Buhari’s Nominee Who ‘Started Schooling A Year Before He Was Born

The Curriculum Vitae of Alhaji Yahaya Muhammad, who is among those nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Board, has shown that he started primary education a year before he was born.

Naija News recalls that Buhari had, in a letter dated September 17, 2021, asked the Senate to, in their usual expeditious manner, confirm his nominations to the positions of the Secretary and Board members of the EFCC, with Muhammad as one of them.

While presenting his committee’s report for consideration by the upper legislative chambers on Tuesday, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Anti Corruption and Financial Crimes, Kwari Sulieman said all the nominees met the necessary requirements to hold public office.

But Senator Hassan Hadejia (APC Jigawa), drew the attention of his colleagues to what he described as “discrepancies” in Muhammad’s credentials, pointing out that the nominee’s credentials showed that he started schooling a year before he was born.

The lawmaker said: “Let me bring to the notice of the House certain discrepancies in the report that are contradictory especially with regards to one of the nominee, Alhaji Yahaya Muhammad on page 8, where the nominee according to record started his primary school before he was born.

“There is also an overlap in the sequence of his educational experience because here, he was born on 29th September, 1969 and he started his Central Primary school in 1968.

“Then he was in Borno Teachers College from 1975 and 1988 while simultaneously he was in the College of Administration Studies from 1980 to 1981. If these are typographical errors Mr President, maybe we should have them corrected for the sake of our record.”

Nevertheless, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, who presided over the day’s plenary, turned a blind eye to this observation, as he put Muhammad’s nomination to voice vote.

Those confirmed alongside Muhammad are George Abang Ekungu, Secretary (Cross River); Luqman Muhammed (Edo); Anumba Adaeze (Enugu) and Kola Raheem Adesina (Kwara).

Female lawmaker beaten, stripped naked in Rivers

Female lawmaker beaten, stripped naked in Rivers

She wanted to escape with the mace, but they wouldn’t let her. Next, a fight ensued.

Cynthia Nwala, who is the leader of the Legislative Council in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State, was beaten to a pulp and stripped naked within the council premises, amid a brewing leadership crisis in the council.

The incident transpired on Monday, October 4, 2021.

Nwala tells Vanguard newspaper that the assault on her was carried out by the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the Council, Chinedu Onyechi.

She adds that Onyechi acted on the orders of Etche Council Chairman, Obinna Anyanwu.

“I met the gate of the council locked as I was leaving the office, having closed for the day,” Nwala says.

“The CSO said the chairman ordered them to lock the gate. I asked why, they said I was going home with the mace (the symbol of authority in the legislature). I said the mace is for the Leader.

“I am to secure the mace due to what is going on in the council. I don’t know what the other councillors are up to.

“The Deputy Leader is acting like he’s the Leader, and one of them urged me to be careful, that I should see what they’re planning.

“The council is under renovation. The place is not secure and the Clerk of the House is not working with me.

“So the CSO said the Chairman said they should come after me. They vandalised my car and started beating me, tore my clothes.

“It was a terrible situation,” she adds.

However, Etche Council Chairman Anyanwu says Nwala isn’t telling the truth.

According to Anyanwu, “that is not true. After screening the Supervisory Councillors, she wanted to cart away the mace.

“That is not her duty to do because the Sergeant-at-Arms is the person that is supposed to be in possession of the mace.

“Because she wanted to cart away the mace, she started having friction with her other colleagues. They locked the council gates and the CSO only waded in to separate the fight.”

Images of Nwala in her torn clothes, have been making the rounds on social to outrage from some members of her constituency.

The police has been called upon to investigate the incident.

Lagos Lawmakers Campaign for more Investments in Waterways Transportation

Lagos Lawmakers Campaign for more Investments in Waterways Transportation

More work is needed attract private investments to the Lagos waterways transportation sector, lawmakers at the State House of Assembly have said.

The lawmakers, who belong to the House Committee on Transportation, made the position known during a recent visit to the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and the Lagos State Ferry Services (LAGFERRY).

Led by its chairman, Hon. Temitope Adewale, the committee agreed that the government had to improve the environment that would enable such business thrive.

Hon. Adewale noted the interest of the House of Assembly in the success of waterways transportation as an alternative to the ever-growing traffic challenges faced by residents of the state.

To this end, the lawmaker urged LASWA to ensure the security of the state’s waterways through effective collaboration with security agencies.

Adewale expressed belief that securing the waterways would help increase public confidence and boost chances of Public Private Partnership (PPP).

Commending the agency for the success so far recorded, the committee chairman appealed for more efficiency while advising that the waterways must not become escape routes for criminals.

He, therefore, urged for more patrol boats to monitor waterways in the state.

Describing LAGFERRY as one of the agencies that had added value to the governance of the state and the transportation sector, Adewale pleaded for more activities that would help attract investors.

He also promised that the House would continue to assist in areas that would ease the job of the agency and help it meet its goals.

Speaking earlier, Mr. Oluwadmilola Emmanuel, General Manager of LASWA, enumerated the achievements of the agency to include the creation of a control room to monitor the various routes on the waterways.

According to him, this strategy has helped to keep the waterways safe and secured just as he added that the agency currently has two patrol boats for the patrol of waterways to avoid criminal activities on the waterways.

He said the agency had provided 294 life jackets and was expecting 845 more.

The agency, Emmanuel said, also collaborates with security agencies for the protection of the waterways.

He, however, said the Marine Police can be equipped further for effective enforcement.

On his part, the Managing Director of LAGFERRY, Hon. Ladi Balogun, said his agency with a mandate to provide ferry services to ease pressure on road transportation, currently has a fleet of 20 boats.

He noted that at least, 480,000 waterways users routinely patronise the boats.

While explaining that the agency was already setting standards for other operators in the industry, he lamented that recurrent expenditure appropriated for it was not enough as the price of fuel affects business.
