AFCON Final Fallout: Bans, Big Fines and VAR Chaos After Senegal–Morocco Showdown

AFCON Final Fallout: Bans, Big Fines and VAR Chaos After Senegal–Morocco Showdown

CAF has come down hard after a stormy Africa Cup of Nations final, handing out suspensions and hefty fines following scenes of chaos in Senegal’s dramatic 1–0 extra-time victory over Morocco in Rabat on January 18.

Senegal coach Pape Thiaw was banned for five CAF matches after being found guilty of “unsporting conduct” and “bringing the game into disrepute.” Television footage showed Thiaw gesturing toward his players during a heated VAR stoppage—an act widely interpreted as encouraging them to leave the pitch.

Several Senegal players briefly walked off before Sadio Mané intervened, convincing his teammates to return so the match could continue.

Two Senegal stars based in the English Premier League, Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr, were each hit with two-match bans for unsporting behaviour toward the referee. The Senegal Football Federation was also slapped with a massive $615,000 fine for multiple disciplinary violations involving players, officials, and supporters.

Morocco were not spared. Forward Ismael Saibari received a three-match ban and a $100,000 fine, while captain Achraf Hakimi was suspended for two matches. The Royal Moroccan Football Federation was fined $315,000, including penalties for ball boys’ behaviour, players and staff invading the VAR area, and fans using lasers to distract Senegal players.

The flashpoint came late in regulation time when Ismaila Sarr’s goal was disallowed for a foul on Hakimi, the 2025 African Player of the Year. Moments later, Morocco were awarded a penalty after Brahim Diaz was fouled, sparking furious protests from Senegal.

The tension escalated in the stands as some supporters threw objects and briefly invaded the pitch before security restored order. After a long delay, Diaz missed the penalty, his weak effort saved by Edouard Mendy.

Extra time followed, and Pape Gueye sealed Senegal’s second AFCON title with the winning goal.

CAF confirmed all bans apply only to CAF competitions and will not affect preparations for the 2026 World Cup. Thiaw will miss five of Senegal’s six 2027 AFCON qualifiers, while the sanctioned players will sit out the first two matches.

Despite the controversy, the final will be remembered as one of AFCON’s most dramatic—and disciplinary-heavy—showdowns.

Maresca slams Delap’s ‘foolish’ red card in Chelsea EFL Cup win

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, labelled Liam Delap’s red card as “very stupid” after the striker’s late dismissal overshadowed the Blues’ dramatic 4–3 Carabao Cup victory over Wolves.

Delap, making his return from a 10-week hamstring lay-off, was sent off just 26 minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute.

According to BBC Sports on Thursday, the 22-year-old picked up two yellow cards in quick succession, first for pushing Yerson Mosquera, then for barging into Emmanuel Agbadou, and will now miss Saturday’s London derby against Tottenham, with João Pedro already a fitness doubt.

When asked whether Delap deserved to be sent off, Maresca said, “Absolutely, yes. Stupid foul. We can avoid that.”

The dismissal came as part of a wider Chelsea collapse.

They built a 3-0 lead at the interval, but after the break Wolves scored three times, with Jamie Gittens’ sensational late strike enough to scrape the Blues into the quarter-finals to face Cardiff City.

Maresca added, “The three goals we conceded, I think all of them we can avoid. Certainly, we also received a very unnecessary red card today.

“After the first yellow card, I told him [Delap] four or five times to keep calm. But Liam is a player who, when he’s on the pitch, is probably playing the game for himself and struggles to realise and listen to those around him.”

It was Chelsea’s sixth red card in nine games, including Maresca’s own dismissal for celebrating a last-minute winner against Liverpool before the international break.

The Italian was asked to clarify whether he had wider concerns about indiscipline, with Chelsea also having received the highest number of yellow cards in the Premier League over the past three seasons.

He continued, “I completely understand when there are red cards like against Brighton [Trevoh Chalobah red] or Manchester United [Robert Sanchez red], that’s difficult, but the red cards against Nottingham Forest and today, both we can and have to avoid.

“It’s embarrassing when it’s a red card like today because it’s two yellow cards in five or 10 minutes. Both, I think, we can avoid. So it’s not good.”

UCL: Arsenal apologise to Atletico Madrid after hot water issues

Arsenal have issued an apology to Atletico Madrid after a hot water failure at Emirates Stadium disrupted the Spanish side’s pre-match preparations.

According to BBC Sports on Tuesday, the issue left Atletico players without access to hot showers following their training session on Monday evening.

UEFA regulations permit visiting teams to train at the host stadium the day before a Champions League fixture.

Diego Simeone’s squad took to the pitch at the Emirates ahead of Tuesday’s group-stage clash, but were forced to return to their hotel early after discovering there was no hot water in their dressing room.

The team were due to finish training at 19:30 but finished 15 minutes early and decided to travel back to their team hotel instead.

Spanish newspaper Marca reported the Atletico squad were ‘angry’ with the situation.

Arsenal apologised to the Atletico Madrid staff for the inconvenience caused, with the issue eventually resolved at 19:25.

Mikel Arteta’s side have won their opening two Champions League games without conceding a goal.

Atletico were beaten 3-2 at Liverpool but responded with a 5-1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Arteta praised Diego Simeone’s side for their willingness to win and having a high level of discipline and organisation on their side.

“First of all [with Simeone’s team], it is the willingness to win. You can sense that in every single ball, in every single yard, the way that they play. It’s about how they compete, and then after how they play. They are two very different things.

“The levels of organisation and discipline are really high, and then they have acquired a lot of talents throughout the years that are very specific for the way they want to play. They are very good at exploiting those opportunities,” Arteta said.

Sweden confirm Potter as new manager

Former Chelsea and Brighton manager Graham Potter has been officially appointed as the new head coach of the Sweden men’s national football team, the Swedish Football Association confirmed on Monday.

According to Fabrizio Romano’s X post on Monday, “Graham Potter, new head coach of Sweden until March 2026, as an initial short-term contract with World Cup mission. Deal agreed last week and signed in the last 24h as former West Ham manager returns immediately.”

He replaces Jon Dahl Tomasson, who was dismissed earlier this month following Sweden’s dismal start to World Cup qualifying, sitting bottom of Group B with just one point from four matches.

PUNCH Online had reported that West Ham United sacked Potter following a disappointing run of form stretching from the second half of last season into the start of the 2025/26 campaign.

Potter is no stranger to Swedish football. He began his managerial career in Sweden with Östersunds FK, transforming the small-town club from the fourth tier to the Allsvenskan and European competition in just over seven years.

His success there earned him a move to England, where he later managed Swansea City, Brighton, and Chelsea.

Morocco makes history with first-ever FIFA U-20 World Cup title

In a landmark moment for African football, Morocco clinched the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup title with a commanding 2-0 victory over Argentina in the final, held early Monday morning in Santiago, Chile.

The North African side owed their historic win to rising star Yassir Zabiri, who struck twice in the first half, once in the 12th minute and again in the 29th, to silence the Argentine crowd and secure the title.

Despite Argentina’s best efforts in the second half, they were unable to break through a disciplined Moroccan backline.

According to ESPN, captain Rayan El-Mourabet led by example, anchoring a rock-solid defence, while goalkeeper Youssef Bakkali delivered a standout performance, making several key saves to maintain a clean sheet.

Morocco’s road to glory was anything but easy. Drawn into a daunting group alongside football heavyweights Spain, Brazil, and Mexico, the Atlas Lions topped the group despite an opening loss to Mexico.

They went on to defeat Brazil and Spain in impressive fashion to advance.

The knockout rounds saw Morocco eliminate South Korea in the round of 16, outclass the United States in the quarter-finals, and edge out France on penalties in a nerve-wracking semi-final. Their victory over Argentina in the final capped a sensational tournament run.

With this triumph, Morocco becomes the second African country to win the U-20 World Cup, following Ghana’s memorable 2009 victory over Brazil.

This win not only marks Morocco’s first FIFA trophy at any level but also underscores the country’s emergence as a growing powerhouse in global football.

PUNCH Online reports that it is a defining moment for Moroccan sport and a proud day for African football.

BREAKING: Nottingham Forest sack Postecoglou after eight-match winless run

Nottingham Forest have parted ways with manager Ange Postecoglou after a winless run of eight matches in charge.

The Greek coach’s time ended on Saturday afternoon after a 3-0 home defeat to Chelsea.

Postecoglou’s side failed to record a single victory — suffering six defeats and crashing out of the Carabao Cup after a dramatic 3-2 loss to Swansea City, despite leading 2-1 in stoppage time.

The team’s only points came from draws against Burnley in the Premier League and Real Betis in the Europa League.

EPL: Chelsea cruise to 3-0 win against Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest’s struggles in the Premier League continued on Saturday as they went down 3-0 at home to Chelsea, extending manager Ange Postecoglou’s winless run to eight matches.

Taiwo Awoniyi made his first start of the season. Forest started the game well and had a few chances, including one for Elliot Anderson, who was crowded out in the box after a Chelsea error.

Morgan Gibbs-White also missed a close-range volley, and Andrey Santos fired just wide after a neat ball from João Pedro.

Chelsea, missing key players like Cole Palmer and Moisés Caicedo, looked quiet in attack in the first half but came alive after half-time. Pedro Neto ran down the left and set up Josh Acheampong to score the opener. Three minutes later, Neto scored a free-kick to make it 2-0.

Forest’s defence continued to struggle, with Igor Jesus seeing a header from Callum Hudson-Odoi hit the bar and post. Reece James added a late third from a half-cleared corner. A late red card for Malo Gusto slightly spoiled the win for Chelsea.

The defeat leaves Forest under serious pressure. Owner Evangelos Marinakis had left his seat long before the final whistle, and Postecoglou’s future looks uncertain. Chelsea, meanwhile, has now won four of their last five visits to Forest, continuing their recent dominance over the Reds.

Ndidi named Besiktas vice captain

Besiktas FC of Turkey have appointed Super Eagles stand-in captain Wilfred Ndidi as the club’s new vice-captain, with the announcement made by the club’s board of directors in a statement released on Friday.

Ndidi will serve as deputy to Turkish international Orkun Kökçü, who has been named the new team captain. The duo replace former captain Necip Uysal and vice-captain Mert Günok as the new leaders of the first team.

“With the decision of our President Serdal Island and the Board of Directors, changes have been made regarding the captaincy of our Football A Team. Based on the recommendation of our technical team and the effectiveness of players on the field, Orkun Kökçü has been appointed as first captain and Wilfred Ndidi as second captain,” the club stated.

Besiktas also expressed gratitude to Uysal and Günok for their leadership and contributions while extending best wishes to Kökçü and Ndidi in their new roles.

The new captaincy duo will begin their leadership duties when Beşiktaş, currently sixth on the Turkish Super Lig table with 13 points from seven matches, host 14th-placed Gençlerbirliği S.K. on Saturday, October 18, in Matchday 8 of the season.

Starmer, Badenoch slam ban on Israeli fans at Villa Europa match

UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer has condemned the decision to ban supporters of Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv from attending their November 6 UEFA Europa League clash against Aston Villa, describing it as “the wrong decision,” The Independent on Friday reports.

Starmer’s remarks come after Opposition Leader Kemi Badenoch blasted the move as “a national disgrace,” accusing authorities of sending “a horrendous and shameful message” that there are parts of Britain “where Jews simply cannot go.”

The Prime Minister joined calls for Birmingham City Council’s Safety Advisory Group and West Midlands Police to reverse the decision and allow Maccabi fans to attend the November 6 match at Villa Park.

Starmer, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), criticised the Birmingham authorities for bowing to those concerns rather than ensuring proper security for all fans.

“This is the wrong decision. We will not tolerate antisemitism on our streets.

“The role of the police is to ensure all football fans can enjoy the game, without fear of violence or intimidation,” he wrote.

Aston Villa announced late Thursday that the club had been instructed by the Safety Advisory Group (SAG) — the body responsible for issuing matchday safety certificates — that no away fans will be permitted for the fixture at Villa Park on Thursday, November 6.

According to the club, the SAG reached the decision after advice from West Midlands Police, who raised public safety concerns outside the stadium and cited potential difficulties in managing protests during the match.

“Following a meeting this afternoon, the SAG have formally written to the club and UEFA to advise no away fans will be permitted to attend Villa Park for this fixture.

“The club are in continuous dialogue with Maccabi Tel Aviv and the local authorities throughout this ongoing process, with the safety of supporters attending the match and the safety of local residents at the forefront of any decision,” Aston Villa said in a statement.

However, Badenoch — responding to the club’s announcement on X also on Thursday — criticised the move, calling it an unacceptable failure of the government’s promise to ensure safety for British Jews.

“This is a national disgrace. How have things come to this? Starmer pledged that Jews are welcome and safe in Britain. That he stands shoulder to shoulder with the Jewish community and will use the full force of his government to prove it.

“Will he back those words with action and guarantee that Jewish fans can walk into any football stadium in this country? If not, it sends a horrendous and shameful message: there are parts of Britain where Jews simply cannot go,” she wrote.

PUNCH Online, however, reports on Friday that UEFA and Maccabi Tel Aviv have yet to issue formal statements on the development.

EPL: Chelsea’s Palmer out of action for another six weeks – Maresca

Cole Palmer has been ruled out of action for six more weeks, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said on Friday.

The England midfielder has not played since Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat at Manchester United on September 20 — when he came off midway through the first half.

Maresca initially said he hoped Palmer, 23, would be back after this month’s international break.

“I was wrong. Unfortunately, he needs to be out for probably six more weeks. So, yes, this is the update,” he said.

The Italian said he was confident that the forward would not require surgery.

“We try just to protect Cole as much as we can, and the most important thing is that when he comes back, he’s fully recovered,” he added.

Maresca, whose team faces Nottingham Forest on Saturday, said replacing “one of the best players in the Premier League” was difficult.

“For sure, we need to find a different solution, we need to find different skills, because we don’t have another player like Cole,” he said. “Because Cole is unique.”
