NASRE: Building A Safety Net For Nigeria’s Journalists

NASRE: Building A Safety Net For Nigeria’s Journalists

At a time when Nigeria’s media industry is strained by economic uncertainty, job instability, and shrinking newsroom resources, the Nigerian Association of Social and Resourceful Editors (NASRE) is redefining professional solidarity. More than a network of editors, it is emerging as a critical support system for journalists navigating an increasingly precarious landscape.

Founded on the principles of welfare, solidarity, and professional growth, NASRE has positioned itself as a responsive and forward-looking body within the media ecosystem. While many professional associations remain focused on advocacy and training, NASRE distinguishes itself by combining these roles with direct and practical support for journalists and their families.

At the core of its mission is a clear proposition that no journalist should be abandoned in times of need. Through financial assistance, targeted outreach, and sustained engagement, the association has supported members facing hardship, as well as widows and families of deceased practitioners. These largely understated interventions have steadily earned NASRE credibility and respect across the industry.

The organisation’s approach reflects a keen awareness of the pressures confronting media professionals, including irregular pay, job insecurity, and limited institutional backing. In such an environment, NASRE’s welfare initiatives are not merely charitable, they are essential.

Beyond welfare, the association is investing in professional resilience. Through collaboration, networking, and knowledge-sharing platforms, it is equipping editors and practitioners to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving digital media space, where adaptability is no longer optional.

Headquartered in Lagos, NASRE continues to broaden its reach, attracting a growing membership united by the need for a more responsive and supportive professional community. Its expansion signals a shift in expectations within the industry, away from symbolic affiliations towards institutions that deliver measurable value.

For many observers, NASRE represents a necessary evolution, a professional body anchored not just in ideals, but in impact. By combining empathy with structure, it offers a model of what media associations can become in challenging times.

As the industry continues to evolve, organisations like NASRE may prove indispensable. In a profession devoted to telling society’s stories, it is ensuring that the storytellers themselves are not left behind.

Yuletide: NASRE Extends Welfare Support To Media Practitioners, Families

The Nigerian Association of Social and Resourceful Editors (NASRE) has held its final outreach programme for the year, tagged “Yuletide Outreach / Get-Together,” offering comfort, support, and a sense of togetherness to families of media practitioners in Lagos.

The event took place at The City Pulse Lounge, LTV8, Agidingbi, Ikeja, and featured a warm, family-friendly atmosphere marked by interaction and informal engagement between NASRE leaders and beneficiaries.

At the outreach, the association formally accommodated five new beneficiaries and extended support to 10 existing beneficiaries, with the gathering designed as an interactive session rather than a ceremonial event. The programme also attracted over 10 media colleagues from various media organisations, who witnessed what many described as a unique family fun fair within the media community.

Speaking on behalf of the President of NASRE, Comrade Femi Oyewale, the Event Committee Chairman, Mr. Adebayo Adetu, conveyed the President’s goodwill and Yuletide message to beneficiaries and guests. He reaffirmed the association’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of media practitioners and their families, particularly during challenging periods, while urging members to continue fostering unity, compassion, and mutual support within the profession.

As part of the outreach, Rite Foods Limited also extended its support by providing its products to beneficiaries, a gesture that further complemented the association’s welfare drive and added value to the festive gathering.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Esther Thomas, widow of late veteran entertainment journalist Peter Thomas, popularly known as “The Groove Master,” expressed deep appreciation to NASRE for its consistency and compassion. Peter Thomas, who passed away on November 25, 2021, was a respected figure in the Nigerian entertainment media space.

The late journalist worked with notable publications including Fame Magazine, Global Excellence, THISDAY and The Punch, and played a significant role in shaping the careers of several Nigerian music stars. Through impactful write-ups and strategic publicity, he contributed to the rise of artistes such as Don Jazzy and D’Banj (Mo’Hits Crew), P-Square, K1 De Ultimate, Pasuma, Atawewe, KCee, Atorise and Presh, Yinka Best, among others.

According to Mrs. Thomas, NASRE was the first and only media association to visit her family after her husband’s demise and later returned with even greater support. She described the gesture as rare and reassuring, noting that the association’s interventions demonstrated genuine concern for the welfare of its members and their families.

Another beneficiary, Mrs. Aponmade, widow of late Kayode Aponmade, also expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of herself and her children.

“On behalf of myself and my children, we say a big thank you to NASRE for making today’s get-together a memorable one. The money you described as a token has gone a long way for us. May God continue to elevate you all in your endeavours. We are truly grateful,” she said.

A newly admitted beneficiary, Mr. Adeshola Akeem, a weekend reporter with The Sun, applauded the initiative, describing it as reassuring and encouraging. He said the outreach reinforced the idea that beyond professional engagements, there exists a supportive network of colleagues who function as friends and family, always ready to look out for one another.

Another beneficiary, Mrs. Dapo Oshin, commended NASRE for its support and called for greater attention to educational assistance, noting that support for children at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels would provide lasting relief to affected families. She described the initiative as thoughtful and impactful, with long-term benefits for beneficiaries.

The programme ended on a note of gratitude and shared commitment to sustaining welfare-focused initiatives that strengthen bonds within the media profession.

NASRE, the Nigerian Association of Social and Resourceful Editors, is a professional body of media practitioners across print, broadcast, and digital platforms, dedicated to collaboration, innovation, capacity development, and the promotion of welfare and sustainable growth within Nigeria’s media industry.

The Comptroller of the Ogun 1 Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Comptroller Godwin Otunla, has commended the Nigerian Association of Social and Resourceful Editors (NASRE) for its humanitarian efforts in supporting journalists facing health and financial challenges.

Otunla gave the commendation on Thursday when a five-man delegation from NASRE paid him a courtesy visit at the Command headquarters in Idi-Iroko, Ogun State.

The team, led by Mr. Bunmi Obarotimi, who represented NASRE President Mr. Femi Oyewale, briefed the Comptroller on the objectives and achievements of the association since its inception. Obarotimi explained that NASRE was established to promote professionalism in journalism while providing welfare support to ailing and distressed members of the media.

He highlighted some of the association’s interventions, including financial and moral support to former Ogun State NUJ Chairman, Mr. Niyi Ogungbola, who has been battling health challenges.

“Journalism is often a thankless job. Many journalists face health and financial difficulties after years of service. NASRE Foundation was established to fill this gap and stand by our colleagues when they need help,” Obarotimi stated.

In his response, Comptroller Otunla expressed delight at the visit and praised NASRE for its patriotic role in promoting balanced reportage and assisting members in distress. He urged journalists to continue projecting the positive side of the country while maintaining professionalism in their reportage.

“Every nation has its good and bad sides, but when we overemphasize the negatives, it damages our image. I appreciate NASRE for promoting responsible journalism and for your selfless service to your colleagues,” Otunla said.

The Customs boss also encouraged the association to sustain its collaboration with government agencies and security institutions, noting that such partnerships foster national development. He pledged the Command’s support for NASRE’s future initiatives and commended the association for its transparency and commitment to social responsibility.

“The assistance you render to your colleagues is laudable. May the Almighty continue to bless your cause and enable you to do more,” he added.

On behalf of NASRE President, Comrade Femi Oyewale, NASRE delegates presented a cash donation to support the family’s immediate needs.

During the visit, Adetu described the late Peter Thomas as a respected media figure who made remarkable contributions to the Nigerian entertainment industry through journalism and publicity.

“Peter Thomas was more than a journalist; he was a movement. He gave a platform to countless entertainers and shaped the careers of many of Nigeria’s top musicians. His legacy lives on in the successes of those he supported selflessly,” Adetu said.

“We are appealing to the likes of Don Jazzy, D’Banj, P-Square, K1 De Ultimate, Pasuma, and others who, in one way or another, benefitted from Peter Thomas’ golden pen to step in and support his family. This is the time to give back,” he urged.

He also relayed a message from NASRE President, Comrade Femi Oyewale, who called on public and private institutions to collaborate with the NASRE Media Foundation in supporting journalists facing tough life circumstances.

“I call on corporate organizations, public and private institutions, and well-meaning individuals to team up with the NASRE Media Foundation to support journalists who are struggling, in order to ease the suffering that often comes with the job,” Oyewale said.

Peter Thomas died after a long health battle. He was diagnosed with perforated intestines and underwent two major surgeries before passing. He is survived by his wife and four children, three girls and one boy.

Fighting back tears, his widow revealed that the family has been struggling to survive and is now being asked to vacate their current home. She expressed deep gratitude to NASRE for their consistent support, recalling that this was not the first time the association had come to her aid.

“I honestly don’t know how to thank NASRE. This is not the first time they’ve shown up for us. It means the world to know that people still remember my husband and care about our wellbeing,” she said.

She described NASRE as “a group of truly humane editors” who have restored some hope to her family during these trying times.

Among the NASRE delegates on the visit were Mr. Obarotimi Oluwanbunmi, Mr. Obadimu Adeyemi, and Mr. Owodunni Lateef, all directors of the association, who accompanied Mr. Adetu Adebayo to express solidarity and compassion to the family of the late journalist.
