Kaduna Govt Sacks 233 teachers, Schedules Fresh Competency Test For 12,254 Others

The Kaduna State Government has sacked 233 teachers for presenting fake certificates upon the time of their recruitment.

Tijjani Abdullahi, the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board disclosed this on Thursday during a press conference in Kaduna.

He said the teachers were sacked after inquiries from the institutions they claimed to have attended, which showed that they presented fake certificates.

The decision to investigate the certificates of the teachers, the SUBEB Chairman explained, commenced in April 2021 as part of the board’s responsibility to ensure that all teachers actually have the qualifications they presented.

According to him, the major objective of the exercise is to ensure that all our teachers have the requisite credentials that constitute the basic qualifications for employment as teachers.

The Kaduna SUBEB Chairman added that 451 certificates have so far been verified by contacting the institutions that awarded the certificates, while nine of the 13 institutions contacted have responded.

“So far, the Board has verified 451certificates by contacting the institutions that awarded the certificates. Nine of the 13 institutions contacted have responded, as of today,” he said.

“The responses from the institutions show that 233 teachers presented fake certificates. This represents 51% of the 451 certificates on which responses have been received from the awarding institutions. One institution disowned 212 of these 233 fake certificates.

“The Board will dismiss the 233 teachers who presented these fake certificates, while their files will be forwarded to the Ministry of Justice to initiate prosecution for forgery. The Board will continue to check the integrity of the certificates presented by teachers to ensure that this critical profession is not devalued by impostors.

“As part of our duty of transparency, the names of the 233 teachers found to have presented fake certificates will be uploaded on the website of the Kaduna State Government today.”

The Board also announced that it will conduct a fresh competency test for 12,254 teachers from January 2022 as part of continuous assessment of its teachers both for their own improvement and for better delivery of learning.

It will be recalled that the Kaduna State Government had in 2017 recruited 25,000 new teachers after it sacked over 22,000 unqualified ones following a competency.

112 Students Withdraw From FUT Minna Due To Financial Struggles – Dep VC

Amid the deteriorating state of Nigeria’s economy, a total of 112 students have voluntarily withdrawn from the Federal University of Technology, Minna on financial grounds in 2021 alone, the institution’s management has said.

The University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor and chairman, Students Support Committee, Professor Emeka Udensi, disclosed this on Monday during the launch of a students’ benevolence fund as part of efforts to cushion the worsening economic situation of students from low income families.

The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Abdullahi Bala, who formally launched the fund during the 2nd and 3rd Annual Institutional Performance Review Retreat of the university at its main campus in Gidan Kwano, said the provision of the fund became necessary to ameliorate the plight of students whose “lofty aspirations are threatened daily by their financial constraints.

“Let it not be said that the future of a promising student is killed while we all could do something little and little together to help,” he said.

“We have seen a very worrying trend of a large number of students having to defer their sessions, having to drop out as a result of financial difficulties,

“And we feel that as parents we also have to stand up and be counted in making sure that dreams, aspirations and potentials of our youths are not killed as a result of financial difficulties,” he added.

“We believe that as a university, whatever we can do to stop this kind of withdrawal we should be able to do it, and that’s why we are creating the benevolence fund,” said Bala.

Reacting, the president of the institution’s student union, Shuaib Isiaka Yahaya, described the initiative as unprecedented while appreciating the management for prioritizing the welfare of students.

He assured of the continued support of the students’ union in the policy direction of the university.

How NECO Withholds Over 80,000 Students Result Over N500m Debt In Kano

The ambition of no fewer than 80,000 outgoing secondary school students of Kano State to go to the higher institutions now hangs in the balance as the National Examination Council, NECO, has withheld their results over alleged N500 million unpaid debt by the state government.

A report monitored on BBC Hausa Service claimed the examination body withheld the students’ results because the state government could not pay the NECO examination debt amounting to over N500 million.

According to the report, 70 percent of the students who sat for the NECO examination in 2021 were sponsored by their parents, but because of the unpaid debt by the state government, their results have not been released till date.

Kano state is among states such as Adamawa, Niger and Zamfara that owe NECO millions of Naira in examination fees ,the report alleged.

One of the affected students told the BBC Hausa Service that they “are in a dilemma because post secondary institutions are about to close the admissions for the session.”

He said he was waiting for the release of the NECO result to process admission into the university of his choice, but might lose the chance if the problem persisted.

“We tried and contacted our school, but we were told to be patient, and time is running out. I don’t know what will happen next,” he said.

Efforts to reach the state Commissioner for Education, Sanusi Saidu Kiru, were unsuccessful.

Already, some rights campaigners have written to the state government, urging it to take the necessary action to avoid halting the students’ educational pursuits.

A rights activist, Ibrahim Umar, said the complaints they received from students at a time tertiary institutions were closing admission processes ,made them to intensify pressures on government to solve the problem.

Umar said they would take the necessary measures to see that the results are released to the students, because majority paid for their exams fees themselves.
