Breaking: ASUU Declares One Month Warning Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Wednesday suspended its nationwide industrial action.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has resolved to embark on a one-month warning strike to see if the federal government will address its demands before taking the next action.
Society gazette reports that the conclusion was reached after serious deliberations between the academic union and the National Executive Council, NEC.

This news platform had reported earlier that ASUU on Saturday commenced a two-day meeting to decide on whether or not to embark on another industrial action.

The meeting which was supposed to end on Sunday, however, was extended into the early hours of Monday, and the academic union has now concluded to go on a warning strike to press home its demands from the government.

A source at the meeting held in Lagos who confirmed the development to newsmen on Monday morning explained that the strike is to allow the Federal Government to do the needful failure to which the union would go on an indefinite strike.

“We just want to give the government a long rope hoping that it would see the need to avoid a total paralysis of academic activities in the nation’s universities. We are parents too and have our children in the system but we cannot watch and allow the total collapse of education in the country,” Vanguard quoted the source as saying.

He added: “Our agitation is in the interest of all and if the system is made better, we will all enjoy it. Prominent personalities in the country have waded into the matter but the government seems recalcitrant. Our National President would explain more when he briefs the press later today.”

Naija News understands that ASUU’s demands from President Muhammadu Buhari-led government include the payment of Earned Academic Allowance, revitalization fund, the replacement of the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System, IPPIS, with the University Transparency and Accountability System UTAS, among others.

ASUU Gives Update On Planned Strike, Slams Buhari Over Supervision Of MoA

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said maintained it will soon embark on the indefinite strike should the federal government fail to meet its demands.
A communique made available to newsmen on Monday evening revealed that the academic union and the National Executive Council will meet at the University of Lagos on February 12 and 13.

ASUU is demanding that the Federal Government implement the Memorandum of Action it signed with the union last year.

According to the Chairman of the Kwara State University branch, Malete, Dr Salau Sheu, the federal government is shying away from its responsibility by asking ministers to oversee the implementation of the MoA.

The academician faulted President Muhammadu Buhari for assigning two ministers to oversee the implementation of the Memorandum of Action signed last year with ASUU.

ASUU said: “First, the assigned ministers are not part of the agreement. Only the ministers of Finance and Education were part of the agreement.

“ASUU is having its National Executive Council meeting at the University of Lagos on February 12 and 13.

“If nothing is done by the government between now and then, the lecturers may go on strike.”

Naija News reports that ASUU had earlier declared Monday, February 7, 2022, as a lecture-free day.

This is as the academic union maintained its energy towards embarking on another industrial action following its lingering loggerhead with the federal government.

The Monday lecture-free day Naija News understands is to help the varsity association to sensitize members of the public on its disagreement with the government.

ASUU Urges Nigerians To ‘Call FG To Order’ To Avoid Another Prolonged Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has urged concerned Nigerians and lovers of education to prevail on the Federal Government to implement the agreements it reached with the union in order to avert another round of industrial action.

The union said its members were already tired of the alleged insincerity of the Federal Government over the agreements.

The Chairman of ASUU in Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Dr Biodun Olaniran and Secretary, Dr Toyin Abegunrin, said this in a statement issued after the congress of the union which was held on Monday.

The union said it had resolved to embark on an indefinite strike should the Federal Government failed to implement the agreements within a specific period of time.

While asking “Nigerians to prevail on the Federal Government to avert the impending strike’, the union said its decision to give the government enough time to implement the agreements reached with it since 2009 had portrayed it as a toothless bulldog.

The statement read, “Our Union, ASUU, is using this medium to call upon the Federal Government (FG) of Nigeria once again to implement the agreement it (FG) has signed with ASUU. It is unfortunate to mention that the FG signed agreement with the ASUU since 2009 but the agreement is not implemented till date.

” The agreement was renegotiated in the name of peace. But to our dismay, the government has refused to sign the renegotiated agreement. In order to make the implementation of the agreement easy for the FG, the union has limited its demand to only three:

Signing/implementation of the renegotiated agreement of 2009. Adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Software (UTAS) instead of the controversial IPPIS.

“Conclusions on these matters have been reached with the government several months ago but yet, the FG is avoiding the final stage of signing the agreement. All the FG was doing is promising all the time. The FG has taken the union for a toothless bulldog that can only bark but cannot bite. We, as a union have taken time to pull the long rope with the government until our patience is completely exhausted.

“Our union is tired of the merry-go-round approach devised by the government about the same issues. We can no longer tolerate the swinging pendulum (with a declining amplitude) attitude the government set for us.

“We have endured enough with such insincerity. We have resolved to embark on indefinite strike action if government failed to yield to our demands within a specified period of time. The union therefore, is using this medium to call on the well-meaning Nigerians and the general public to call the FG to order in this respect, and that it (government) should respect its agreement with ASUU.”

Teacher Allegedly Impregnates, Absconds With 16-year-old Student

A man, Stanley Ejekwu has accused his daughter’s teacher of impregnating and eloping with her.

Ejekwu told The PUNCH that his daughter who is an SS3 student in Life Abundant Primary/Secondary, Diobu in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, ran away with her teacher because of the pregnancy.

He alleged that he saw a WhatsApp message from a man on his daughters phone asking when they would have s3x. He called the number and asked him to stay away from his daughter.

The father went on to state that his daughter left home on December 2021 because she was pregnant.

He decided to visit the girl’s school to ask the proprietress to compel the teacher to inform him of his daughters whereabouts

Stanley said: “I am suspecting the teacher impregnated my daughter and I suspect him over my daughter’s disappearance. Why is it that my daughter cannot contact any person in my house but the teacher? He forwarded my daughter’s number to me. I believe he is holding my 16-year-old daughter,”

“The other pupils in the school told me that the food my daughter took to school, that she and this teacher ate them together every day in school

“So, I went to the Mile 3 Police Station because I discovered that my daughter was pregnant and she ran away from the house. I saw a love message this man sent her and I called to warn him against what he was doing.”

The teacher in question has however denied the allegations brought against him.

UPDATE: ASUU Accuses Federal Govt. Of Blackmail & Propaganda, Threatens Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has accused the Federal Government of blackmail and propaganda.

ASUU made the remark while accusing the Federal Government of reneging on plans to review the draft Renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement.

In a statement titled, ‘Enough of blackmail’, and signed by its president, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, ASUU vowed to continue fighting for the welfare of lecturers.

The body also postponed its decision on strike because consultations were still ongoing.

ASUU reiterated that the Federal Government had failed to address all the issues raised in the 2009 agreements.

The statement reads partly: “NEC was worried by the spirited efforts of government agents to reduce the demands of ASUU to a regime of intermittent payment of watered-down revitalisation fund and release of distorted and grossly devalued Earned Academic Allowances.

“ASUU shall not relent in demanding improvement in the welfare and conditions of service of our members. However, we shall resist any attempt to blackmail the union and derail our patriotic struggle for a productive university system by official propaganda founded on tokenism and crumb-sharing.

“However, considering the ongoing intervention and consultation efforts, NEC resolved to review the situation at a later date with a view to deciding on the next line of action.”

Only those vaccinated against COVID-19 will serve from next year – NYSC

NYSC says from January 2022, only fully vaccinated Prospective Corps Members (PCMs) will be allowed to register and partake in the scheme.

“From the next orientation in the year 2022, all incoming PCMs will show evidence of vaccination before they will be allowed into the camp for registration.

“We want to ensure that we adhere strictly to the non-pharmaceutical safety protocols of COVID-19,’’ the Director-General, Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim said on Monday in Abuja.

He was addressing the 2021 Batch “C’’ Stream II set of corps members in a virtual meeting.

Mr Emeka Mgbemena, NYSC’s spokesman said in a statement that the director-general gave the directive in the face of reported cases of the Omicron variant of the Coronavirus in Nigeria.

Ibrahim said that the scheme would not let down its guard of ensuring strict adherence to the COVID-19 safety protocols.

“I commend the Federal Government, the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19, the National Centre for Disease Control, and other stakeholders for the success of the 2021 Batch “C’’ Stream II orientation course,’’ Ibrahim was quoted as saying.

The director-general urged the Batch “C’’ Stream II set of corps members whose orientation course ends on Dec. 14, to continue to build on the skills learned during the orientation course.

He said this would make them to become business owners, instead of job seekers.

He assured that the scheme had partnered with the CBN, Access Bank, Bank of Industry, the NYSC Foundation, and Heritage Bank to support corps members with good business proposals with soft loans.

“Efforts are ongoing for the establishment of the NYSC Trust Fund which will make more funds available for every willing corps member to start their businesses as they exit service.

“NYSC is a platform for those that are very serious. Please take the skills acquisition seriously and ensure you register for the post-camp training.

“I can assure you that our partners are ready to support us to ensure that the start-up capitals are made available to corps members,’’ Ibrahim said.

The director-general advised corps members to choose personal projects that could be completed within the service year while also urging them not to borrow money to execute the projects.

He said that funds for personal projects should be sourced from their locality.

“Make sure you call on the traditional rulers, leaders, and youths so that they can support your project. Do not borrow money because you want to win the national honours award,’’ the director-general admonished.

Offa Poly Denies Lecturer’s allegation against rector, says he is a dismissed staff

The Federal Polytechnic Offa has described the allegation by a lecturer of the institution that the Rector, Dr Lateef Olatunji, impregnated his wife as a fraudulent fabrication.

The school, in a statement by the Director, Information, Public Relations and Protocols, Olayinka Iroye, in it’s reaction to the divorce petition filed by the lecturer, Mr Aderemi Bankole, before an Osun State High Court, Ede claimed that the lecturer had been dismissed from the school for fraudulent act and insurbodibation.

The management of the polytechnic also said the female lecturer had divorced Bankole and had since married another man who is not working in.the.school.

The polytechnic said Bankole had since his dismissal from the school resorted to blackmail to get back at the management.

The polytechnic spokesman said Bankole should be further warned “to stop further display of stupidity” as the institution would not hesitate to institute a criminal libel case against him.

The statement read, “The attention of The Federal Polytechnic Offa has been drawn to an online publication where one Aderemi Bankole was said to have urged an Osun State High Court stationed in Ede to dissolve his marriage alleging his wife of infidelity with the rector.

“We want to inform the general public that all allegations stated in the write up are fraudulently false, fabricated and of the haunting and obsess imagination of the Aderemi Bankole. The litany of accusations which are frivolous and a mere figment of his mind further exposed his psychological and emotional precariousness.

“The said Rasaq Aderemi Bankole is not a staff of the polytechnic, having been found guilty of gross misconduct, as a result of flagrant violation of the Polytechnic extant rules, and was dismissed from the Polytechnic.

“Apart from his inglorious exit from the Polytechnic, he is also wanted by TETFund for taking Oversea Grant for Post Graduate studies and failed to utilize the money for that purpose.

“Bankole should be cautioned to stop this cheap blackmail, and assassinating the character of the Rector, thus soiling the good name of the Polytechnic that fed and clothed him for over 2 decades because of his selfish and sinister motive.

“It will interest the general Public to know that Bankole’s former wife had divorced him and had since remarried to another man who is neither a staff of the Polytechnic nor anyone from Offa.”

Society gazette had reported Bankole’s petition that the rector was having an affair with his wife and that the rector impregnated her when they both travelled to London for six months without his consent.

He prayed the court to dissolve his marriage to the female lecturer. He said he got married to his estranged wife at the Marriage Registry in Festac town, saying they had three children together.
