Buhari Issues Directive To APC Ahead Of National Convention

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the National Caretaker and Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to immediately prepare the schedule/timetable for the national convention.
Recall that the Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum and Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, had disclosed that the president would meet with APC governors on Sunday over the party’s national convention.

Speaking with State House correspondents after a meeting with the president, Lalong said the leaders will discuss the convention slated for February and other matters affecting the party.

A source close to the APC governors told ThisDay that Buhari had asked the committee led by Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State to submit the prepared schedule before Friday.

Following the president’s directive, the source said the caretaker committee will meet on Tuesday to prepare the timetable and submit it to the president for approval.

Speaking further, the source said that the governors were divided on the issue of holding the convention next month or postponing the event.

He claimed that some of the governors wanted the exercise to hold next month to ensure that reconciliations that may arise after the convention are fully addressed before next year’s general election while others want the event shifted.

The source stated that the publicity, venue, accreditation, finance and other committees would depend on the outcome of the two meetings on Sunday and Tuesday.

Tragedy As Cliff Collapses On Three Tourists Boats In Brazil, Seven People (Video)

At least seven people were killed and three were missing after a cliff collapsed onto boats carrying tourists on a lake in Brazil, authorities said Saturday.

Rescue teams including a dive squad and members of the Brazilian Navy rushed to Furnas Lake in Minas Gerais state, where panicked tourists had watched helplessly as a large rock fragment broke off a ravine and plunged atop three boats.

The latest official toll is “seven dead and three missing,” Minas Gerais firefighters’ spokesman Pedro Aihara said on Saturday night.

Another 32 were wounded, including nine who had to be hospitalized, authorities said.

Firefighters had initially reported 20 missing, but “that number was substantially reduced because a good part of the victims who were unaccounted for were people who moved by their own means to hospitals,” Aihara said in a voice message sent to reporters.

Tourists flock to see the rock walls, caverns and waterfalls that surround the green waters of Lake Furnas, formed by the hydroelectric dam of the same name.

Dramatic videos shared on social networks caught the exact moment when the cliff fell on the three boats.

Another video posted on social media shows the minute before the fall, in which several people warn that “lots of stones are falling” and yell at the occupants of the other boats to move away from the wall.

President Jair Bolsonaro retweeted some of these videos on his account, and reported that “as soon as the unfortunate disaster occurred, the Brazilian Navy moved to the site to rescue victims and transport the injured.”

The divers’ search will be interrupted overnight for safety reasons and resumed in the morning, but other rescuers continue to work at the site.

Very heavy rain has fallen in recent days in southeastern Brazil, making the collapse more likely, according to firefighters.

2023: I Don’t Care Who Becomes President…My Preferred Candidate May Be Eliminated — Buhari’s Confusing Position On Successor

Viewers who watched President Muhammadu Buhari’s interview on Wednesday must have been bemused after the president gave two contradictory responses about his preferred candidate for 2023 presidential election.

Buhari spoke about the economy, insecurity, his reservations about the recently signed 2022 budget and his refusal to give assent to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, amongst others, during the interview aired by Channels TV.

But when asked about who he prefers to succeed him in 2023, the president said he had no favourite candidate and isn’t concerned about who emerges his successor at the polls.

“I am not interested in who becomes the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) as I am open to the emergence of anyone. Let him come, whoever it is.

“The only important thing (is) I made sure that on record, nobody should ask me to come and give any evidence in any court. Otherwise, whoever it is, he will be in trouble. Because all the important things are on record. I made sure about that. Important issues are all on record.”

In the same breath, the president admitted having a favourite candidate but said he prefers to “keep it (a) secret”.

“I wouldn’t (reveal my preferred candidate) because the person could be eliminated if I mention it. I better keep it secret,” said Buhari.

Speaking further on why he declined assent to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, the president said it was undemocratic to impose direct primaries as the only option for political parties to elect candidates for elections.

““We must not insist that it has to be direct; it should be consensus and indirect,” Buhari had said, adding that he would sign the bill if indirect primaries and consensus candidates were added as options.

Police has Misplaced over 88,000 AK-47 Rifles – Report

The Office of Nigeria’s Auditor General of the federation reported that over 88 thousand AK-47 rifles have been unaccounted for as of December 2018.

This was disclosed by Nigeria’s Auditor General, Adolphus Aghughu in its weapons review of police armouries, according to Reuters.

This comes at a period of rising criminal activities by violent non-state actors acquiring weapons.

The report stated that multiple weapons were missing and unaccounted for under the Nigerian Police which covered a period till December 2019.

They stated that the “total number of lost firearms as reported as of December 2018 stood at 178,459 pieces,” adding that “out of this number, 88,078 were AK-47 rifles.”

They also warned that there is a serious risk of the weapons ending up in the wrong hands.

The report is set to be presented before the National House of Assembly where the Police is expected to appear to explain themselves.

Recall Nairametrics reported last year that President Muhammadu Buhari approved the establishment of a National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), which is part of the ongoing restructuring of Nigeria’s security architecture to address rising threats and strengthen the regional mechanism for the control, prevention and regulation of Small Arms and Light Weapons.

Meanwhile, Socioeconomic research firm, SBM Intel reported earlier this year that the proliferation of small arms and light weapons has driven the rise in violence in Nigeria. This violence has led to mass displacement and has resulted in Nigeria having several internally displaced people that rival countries that are officially at war.

Why We’ll Miss Hon Adetoun Adediran, Lagos Speaker Obasa Mourns Ex-Lawmaker

Speaker Obasa

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has described the demise of Hon. Adetoun Adediran, a former Deputy Speaker of the State as shocking.

The late Adediran served as a member of the House representing Surulere Constituency 1 between 1999 and 2003.

In a tribute by his media office, Dr. Obasa expressed sadness at the former lawmaker’s demise saying the late Adediran died at a time her legislative and political experiences were still very important to Lagos and Nigeria.

Obasa described Adediran as a passionate woman who wanted the best for her society adding that to achieve this, she played major roles in the Fourth Assembly of Lagos State.

“Hon. Adetoun Adediran is leaving behind fond memories of her roles as a lawmaker in the emergence of a more modern Lagos.

“As a principal officer at the House, she was passionate and active making sure her voice was heard among her colleagues who were mostly men.

“It was this same passion for service that got her the position of Women Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos. She also later became the Chairman of the Lagos State Building and Investment Company.

“We mourn her demise as it came at a time her experience and wisdom were still desired for the progress of our state. We mourn because death has snatched one of our finest politicians.

“While I pray that God grant her a peaceful rest, I also pray that He strengthen those she left behind and give them the fortitude to bear this huge loss,” Obasa said.
