Calabar Varsity Female Law Students Protest Sexual Harrassment by Dean

Calabar Varsity Female Law Students Protest Sexual Harrassment by Dean

The Law Faculty of the University of Calabar yesterday witnessed an uncommon protest where scores of female students thronged roads on the campus against the dean.

Platforms Africa reports that the female law students are accusing Professor Cyril Ndifon, their dean, of sexual assault.

They brandished all kinds of unprintable phrases and clauses on placards to make their point like;

““Prof Ndifon, let the girls with big breasts breathe, stop suffocating us!!!,”

“We are tired of sucking dicks,” was another boldly scribbled in black ink on a white placard which the students held to express their grievances against Ndifon, according to a video shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday.

“Law girls are not bonanza Prof Ndifon should stop grabbing us” reads another placard which a female student waved.

The disgruntled students, majority of whom were female and dressed in the signature white shirts on black skirts, had gathered in front of a storey building presumed to be the law faculty, chanting “go”.

Some staff of the university were seen looking at the students through their windows but it was unclear if the aggrieved students were later addressed.

Ndifon was not a stranger to sexual assault charges as he had previously been suspended by the school management in 2016 for allegedly raping a 20-year-old student in his office, according to a report by Peoples Gazette.

Accompanied by a few of their male counterparts, the female law students said they were not “bonanzas” and that the law faculty was not a “brothel” for Mr Ndifon to keep “grabbing” them.

They insisted that “professor Ndifon must go” for their “sanity.”

THE MEMORY OF PROF. IBIDAPO-OBE COMES ALIVE AS ZENITH BANK NAMES ICONIC UNILAG ALUMNI BUILDING IN HIS HONOUR

THE MEMORY OF PROF. IBIDAPO-OBE COMES ALIVE AS ZENITH BANK NAMES ICONIC UNILAG ALUMNI BUILDING IN HIS HONOUR

The memory of Professor Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, came alive as Zenith Bank Plc named the iconic building housing its Unilag Branch and the University of Lagos (Unilag) Alumni in his honour on Friday, November 25, 2022.

In his opening remarks at the commissioning ceremony, the Group Managing Director/CEO of Zenith Bank Plc and Chairman of the Body of Banks’ CEOs in Nigeria, Mr Ebenezer Onyeagwu, lauded the Founder and Chairman of the bank, Jim Ovia, CFR, for being physically present at the commissioning of the building to honour the memory of his late friend, Prof. Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, who served on the board of Zenith Bank as a Non-Executive Director, and for his passion for youth education and digital learning.

He noted the remarkable and continued commitment of Jim Ovia, CFR, to education and youth development in Nigeria, especially through the setting up of James Hope College, a co-educational institution which offers a combination of British and Nigerian curricula, and the James Hope University, which is billed to commence academic activities next year. He also extolled his philanthropy through the setting up of the Jim Ovia Foundation and Mankind United in Total Support for Education Initiative, which has awarded scholarships and produced over 1500 graduates from among indigent people who would not have had the benefit of having a university education.

Onyeagwu also recalled how the bank’s partnership with the University of Lagos began in 2001 with the donation of the first ICT centre, when the Founder and Chairman was the Group Managing Director/ CEO of the bank. According to him, “Today, Zenith Bank has built not less than 15 ICT centres in various tertiary institutions and cities all over the country. And I just want to say that no single institution or individual has been able to accomplish what we have done in that respect. And this is a demonstration of the passion our Founder and Chairman has, not just for education, but also for digital learning and computer literacy. This is in addition to several other support to the university, including the institution of Academic Excellence Awards in 2001, where the best graduating students from selected departments – Banking & Finance, Business Administration, Economics and Accounting, receive awards with financial rewards (currently NGN500,000) and employment opportunity, and the donation of 3,500 tablets to enable indigent students of the university to learn online effectively in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic”. Onyeagwu noted that the building is a strong statement of Zenith Bank’s sustainability initiatives as a signatory to several global sustainability frameworks including the United Nations Principles for Responsible Banking, as it incorporates many of the elements that make a facility environmentally friendly and sustainable.

Speaking at the commissioning of the iconic building, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel noted the huge contributions of Zenith Bank and, in particular, Jim Ovia, CFR, a man he described as a father, to the development of Nigeria. In his words,” when you see things being done consistently in the right way, there is always a man pointing in that direction. A lot of people ask me how come you are doing so much in public service; I say I come from a background where my mentor told me that you don’t report efforts, you don’t give excuses, but you report results. So no matter the situation, even in the midst of an economic recession, in the midst of Covid, you should not stop development and performance. As far as you are from the Zenith family, you are expected to have that creativity and ideas that can make you produce results. In Zenith, we say only the paranoid survive. So I really want to appreciate what I am seeing here today”. Whilst thanking the alumni association and the school authority for their collaborative efforts towards achieving capacity development, which he described as the bane of Nigerian society, he expressed his delight and honour to commission a building named after the revered Late Prof. Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, who touched and impacted so many people while he was alive.

In his address, the National President of Unilag Alumni Association, Dr. John Momoh, thanked the Founder and Chairman of Zenith Bank as well as the management of the bank for the magnificent building and Mrs. Sola Ibidapo-Obe for accepting the association’s request to name the building after her husband as a lasting legacy in his honour. He encouraged everyone to take good care of and maintain the building to serve the university community for years to come.

In her remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, acknowledged the invaluable contributions of Zenith Bank to the development of the school, promising to work with the Alumni association to ensure that the facility serves not only the Alumni but also the entire students populace. She thanked the Founder and Chairman of Zenith Bank, Jim Ovia, CFR, for donating 3,500 tablets to the university, which ensured that students who could not afford laptops for e-learning during the covid-19 pandemic were not left behind.

In her remarks, the wife of the Late Prof. Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, Mrs. Sola Ibidapo-Obe, thanked the Founder and Chairman of Zenith Bank, Jim Ovia, CFR, for immortalising her late husband with such a great edifice named after him. Recalling how close he was to her late husband, Mrs Ibidapo-Obe said: “You are my husband’s friend. Dr. Jim Ovia has demonstrated the love that does not die in his friendship with my beloved husband. When he fell ill, Dr. Jim Ovia was there from day one till the last moment. I could feel the way he felt. From then, I knew that he was a genuine friend. He tried his best to ensure my husband survived, but he did not”.

The iconic building, which sits on a total site area of 950m2, was constructed by a team of world-class builders who had the mandate of delivering the best quality possible. The iconic structure is a smart building that incorporates many of the elements that make a facility environmentally friendly and sustainable, including a grid-tie solar system that sustains power load on solar and not on a generator or national grid, an inverter-driven VRF air conditioning system and motion sensor lighting to enhance energy efficiency, perforated aluminium composite panels for natural lighting and ventilation, free Wi-Fi system to provide internet access for students, fire management systems, including fire hydrant, smoke detector, and fire alarm system, and a LED screen installed on the building for the dissemination of information. The iconic building will house the Unilag Branch of Zenith Bank Plc and the operations of Unilag Alumni. Of the total 1,665m2 of floor area designated for office use in the four-storey building, 585m2 will be used by Unilag Alumni.

‘Be Patient While We Fight FG’ – UniAbuja ASUU Tells Students

The University of Abuja branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) said the Federal Government has not acceded to any of their demands to bring an end to the ongoing strike by the union.

They challenged the government to mention anything they had done to that effect.

The UniAbuja ASUU chairman, Dr. Kassim Umaru, stated this in an interview with members of the press at the end of its Congress held at the University’s Mini Campus in Gwagwalada.

“As far as we are concerned, the federal government has not done anything to our various demands.

“The federal government should tell the Nigerian public what they have done. The two committees that were set up, the Nimi Briggs committee was set up, the Jubrin committee was set up and these committees had their recommendations,” he said.

Umar added that the Congress deliberated on matters pertaining to the strike and decided to reject the offer made by the federal government, saying that the National Executive Council would meet at the end of the four weeks ultimatum to make a decision.

Speaking on reports circulating that the federal government had approved another N100 billion for the university unions as part of the 2009 agreement, Umaru said no official document had been given to ASUU to that effect.

He also urged students to be patient as the strike was for their good as well.

“Is there any document to our union? We should begin to ask them these questions.

“The students will have to be patient, it is a fight we have to do once and for all and it is a fight for the future of unborn children. We have no alternative than to do what we are doing and we must do it so that we can compete with the external world,” he said.

2023: Don’t Vote For Politicians Whose Children Are Schooling Abroad – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has submitted that politicians whose children attend schools abroad do not deserve to get the votes of Nigerians.
This position was made known on Wednesday by the ASUU president, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke.

He argued that it is obvious such politicians do not have the interest of Nigeria at heart and may not be able to profer solutions to the challenges facing the masses.

Osodeke made his view known during a Twitter Space Webinar organised by Premium Times which was tagged; ‘ASUU strike, Revitalisation Fund and the Way Forward.’

In his words, “Anybody you believe cannot take care of your interests, whose children are busy studying abroad, who are living abroad, don’t vote for them.

“I repeat, you don’t need to vote for them, because you don’t vote for people who will take your life.”

No End To Strike Yet
The lingering strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is not ending anytime soon based on the outcome of the latest meeting between the union and the federal government.

This is as ASUU president, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke slammed the government, saying it brought nothing to the negotiation table for the meeting and has not shown any commitment.

Naija News reports Osodeke made the submission on Wednesday during a Twitter Space event in which he spoke on the outcome of Tuesday’s meeting with the government which ended in a deadlock.

Giving details, the ASUU president said the current situation is worse than it was in the beginning. He added that the government is claiming it has no funds.

According to Osodeke, such claims are simply unbelievable, stressing that the only thing the present administration is focused on is how to win the 2023 elections.

Kaduna University Defies ASUU Strike, Commences Second Semester Exams

The management of Kaduna State University (KASU) has resumed academic activities as it commenced second-semester exams for students.

Naija News understands that the institution had suspended its activities after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) embarked on strike action.

However, after five months of inactivity as ASUU and the federal government could not reach a good end, the school management asked students to resume for the 2020/2021 academic session.

Naija News learnt that the resumption is for the continuation of the second-semester examination for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Confirming the development while speaking to Channels Television, the acting Vice Chancellor of Kaduna State University, Prof. Abdullahi Ashafa said the school does not have any industrial dispute with the local branch of ASUU, hence there is no need to continue keeping the student at home.

The varsity Don warned that there will be severe consequences for students and lecturers who fail to resume classes as directed by the university management.

ASUU Extends Strike By Another Four Weeks
The strike embarked upon by ASUU has been extended by another four weeks.

The development was confirmed on Monday in a statement by the ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke on behalf of the union.

Naija News reports the decision to extend the strike was reached at the end of the union’s National Executive Council meeting held at its national secretariat in Abuja on Sunday and concluded in the early hours of Monday.

ASUU explained that the time extension is to allow the federal government enough time to meet their demands.

The statement signed by Osodeke reads in part: “following extensive deliberations and taking cognisance of Government’s past failures to abide by its own timelines in addressing issues raised in the 2020 FGN/ASUU Memorandum of Action (MOA), NEC resolved that the strike be rolled over for four weeks to give Government more time to satisfactorily resolve all the outstanding issues.

“The role-over strike action is with effect from 12.01a.m. on Monday, 1st August, 2022.”

“The role-over strike action is with effect from 12.01a.m. on Monday, 1st August, 2022.”

Origin And Timeline Of Current ASUU Strike
ASUU embarked on a one-month strike on February 14, 2022, over a series of disagreements with the federal government and non-implementation of agreements.

The strike was extended on March 14 by two months, Naija News recalls.

The strike was further extended after the two months expired and has now entered its 168th day as at August 1, 2022.

Some of the issues causing disagreement between ASUU and the federal government are the demand for the adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) instead of the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS), payment of revitalization fund, the poor funding of universities, non-payment of salaries and allowances of some university lectures, as well as the non-payment of earned academic allowance to lecturers, among other issues.

Students from Nasarawa, Ondo and Lagos State to Represent Nigeria at International Spelling-Bee Competition in Dubai

Students from Nasarawa, Ondo and Lagos State to Represent Nigeria at International Spelling Bee Competition in Dubai

Schools from Nasarawa, Ondo and Lagos State recently emerged winners at the recently concluded ninth edition of the International Spelling Bee Nigeria, organised by Peat Philips Foundation, while six students outwitted other finalists at the national final which took place at Marcellina’s place in Ikeja, Lagos.

Agbo Divine Capable of Intimacy with Christ International School, Nasarawa came first in the senior category while Miss David Kate Ene also of Intimacy with Christ International School, Nasarawa and Master Charles David from Greater Tomorrow International School Ondo State came second and third respectively.

The junior category was won by Ojochenemi Solomon Ojotumale of Intimacy with Christ International School, Nasarawa, and Fakande Ifeoluwa David of The Truth Academy Lagos and Odunlami Temiloluwa Janet of Bopton Nry & Pry School, Lagos coming second and third respectively.

Speaking at the national final of this year’s The Spelling Bee Nigeria Competition, the Team Lead at Peat Philips Foundation, organisers of the competition, Mr Akinleye Olu-Philips, said such competitions would build the knowledge of participants, boost their memory and confidence, as well as create healthy competitive spirit.
“Spelling bee involves the use of words and how it is applied in communication”. We believe that when the young ones are taught to develop critical thinking ability at early stage, it will help equip them as great leaders in adulthood. When a word is called out to be spelt, a participant should not assume what it could mean and that is why the participant has the right to ask relevant questions, which are known as the Lifelines. For instance, reign and rain may sound similar, but they are not the same. That is telling the participant not to assume, assumption could be dangerous at times.

“Assumption is one of the factors that is drawing us back in our nation”. The competition is also to help participants develop critical thinking skills. Today ’s world requires people who can think out of the box. Critical thinkers are needed for the growth of our society,” he said.

The Team Lead at Peat Philips Foundation, Mr. Akinleye Olu-Phillips, said spelling enhances education by improving students’ critical reasoning skills and helps Learners develop poise and composure.

“It also encourages reading because if you are a reader, you will be a great speller, and you will have depth and can contribute meaningfully to the development of any nation you find yourself in,” stated Olu-Phillips.

He said the foundation runs two literacy programmes, with international affiliations, The spelling bee and The young orators, which are focused on leadership and communications, believed to be one of the country’s major challenges.
While congratulating the winners, he advised them not to rest on their oars but to study hard and prepare for the intercontinental stage in the first week of October, 2022.

The event this year was sponsored by Learn Africa Plc formerly known as Longman Publishers with support from Indomie Noodles and Rite Foods Plc.

In his speech, the Managing Director, Learn Africa Plc, Alhaji Hassan Bala said Spelling Bee Competition would improve students Spelling and vocabulary and boost their confidence. He said Learn Africa dictionaries comprising Learn Africa Student’s English Dictionary for intermediate students and Learn Africa English Dictionary for Advanced Learners are the official dictionaries of the International Spelling Bee and The Young Orators competitions in Nigeria.
