Labour Strike, WAEC, IPOB: The Timing is Wrong

Labour Strike, WAEC, IPOB: The Timing is Wrong

By Victor Ojelabi

Strike actions have always been a tool deployed by organised labour in Nigeria to either get the attention of the governments or force the latter to do its bidding since time immemorial.

So it did not come as a shock when the Nigeria Labour Congress, under the leadership of Comrade Joe Ajaero and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), mobilised their members for the nationwide industrial action that will commence tomorrow.

And the bone of contention? The two apex labour groups, which expressed disappointment with the government’s handling of the negotiation on the new minimum wage, had declared an indefinite nationwide industrial action effective from Monday, 3 June 2024.

The organised labour is demanding better welfare for its members, specifically asking for the sum of N494,000 as minimum wage due to the economic challenges being faced by many Nigerians.

While it is my belief that the demand is justified, I will appeal to organised labour to tread with caution as the timing is not only wrong but will spell doom for the future of many youths in the country.

As we speak, the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is ongoing and such strike action at this moment will not only cripple movements, it will jeopardise the emotional stability of the students, whose future is on the line.

Many parents, guardians and those who have children in schools are already anxious and smitten by fear over what this action portends not only for their children but for their already stressed pockets.

The leadership of the apex labour groups needs to keep in mind that WASSCE is not a Nigerian examination and, therefore, cannot be suspended or paused for Nigeria to straighten out its internal problems.

Already, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has said the indefinite strike announced by labour unions would not affect the conduct of the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

In an internal memo addressed to the principals of schools participating in the 2024 WASSCE, WAEC said the conduct of the internal examination continues irrespective of the strike.

“The attention of Management has been drawn to a notice of the commencement of an indefinite strike by NLC and TUC effective Monday, 3 June 2024. Please be formally informed that the conduct of WASSCE SC 2024 goes on as scheduled,” the examination board said in a statement signed by the Ekiti Branch Controller for WAEC National Office, identified as T. A. Lawson.

Tell me, how do we expect the students and invigilators to move and access their examination centres when the economy is shut down? How do we even expect them to be in the right state of mind if they manage to access their examination centres?

If a group like the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) was magnanimous enough in allowing the students writing their WASSCE to do so on a day set aside by the secessionist group to honour those who died during the Civil War between 6 July 1967 and 15 January 1970, then I wonder why the union leaders cannot do the same.

Apologise to Kano Citizens, Nigerians Now – Group Tells Gov Abba Yusuf

Apologise to Kano Citizens, Nigerians Now – Group Tells Gov Abba Yusuf

The Concerned Citizens of Kano State have urged Governor Abba Yusuf to issue an immediate apology for his actions that have led to the ongoing Kano Emirates crisis.

The group said the Governor has not only disrespected the rich cultural heritage of Kano State but has also shown a blatant disregard for the judiciary and the rule of law.

A statement signed by its President, Comrade Mustapha Aliyu, said by unilaterally altering the centuries-old Kano Emirates structure, Governor Yusuf has caused harm to the people of Kano, undermined the state’s cultural identity, and set a dangerous precedent for anarchy in Nigeria.

According to Aliyu, his actions have sown discord, fueled division, and threatened the peace and stability of the state and the entire nation hence he must apologise to Nigerians.

“We the Concerned Citizens of Kano State, are issuing this press statement to express our deep disappointment, shock, and outrage over the recent actions of Governor Abba Yusuf, who has brazenly disregarded the rule of law and disrespected the judiciary by reinstating Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as Emir of Kano and dissolving the Kano Emirates, despite a valid court ruling restraining him from doing so,” the statement said.

“This reckless and authoritarian decision has far-reaching implications that threaten the very fabric of our democracy, the stability of our state, and the well-being of our people. By ignoring the court order, Governor Abba Yusuf has:

“Undermined the authority and independence of the judiciary, which is a cornerstone of our democracy. This sets a dangerous precedent, where the executive arm of government can disregard court orders and impose its will on the people.

“Disrespected the rights and dignity of the people of Kano State, who have been subjected to unnecessary tension and division. The people of Kano State have a right to peaceful coexistence, and Governor Abba Yusuf’s actions have denied them that right.

“Created a crisis of confidence in the government, which has lost the trust and confidence of the people. This is a clear indication of a government that is out of touch with the people and is more interested in serving the interests of a select few.

“Damaged the reputation and image of Kano State, both nationally and internationally. The actions of Governor Abba Yusuf have brought shame and disrepute to our state, and we are now seen as a state that disregards the rule of law and disrespects the judiciary.

“Encouraged impunity and lawlessness, which can lead to a breakdown of law and order in the state. When a government disregards the law, it sets a bad example for its citizens, and this can lead to chaos and anarchy.”

The group, therefore, urged Governor Yusuf to take immediate action to address this crisis by issuing a public apology to the people of Kano State and Nigerians at large for his actions, which have brought shame and disrepute to our state.

“He must also respect the court ruling and allow the legal process to run its course,” the statement added. “Take concrete steps to resolve the crisis in a fair, just, and inclusive manner, respecting the rights and dignity of all parties involved. He must ensure the protection of lives and properties, and promote peaceful coexistence among all citizens of Kano State.

“We believe that an apology and a commitment to respect the rule of law will go a long way in healing the wounds and restoring trust and confidence in the government. We call on the people of Kano State and Nigerians at large to remain calm and peaceful and to continue to demand that their government respects the rule of law and upholds the dignity of the people.”

One Year In Office: Nigerians in Diaspora Laud Gov Fubara’s Leadership Style

One Year In Office: Nigerians in Diaspora Laud Gov Fubara’s Leadership Style

…admonishes detractors to give Rivers State time to heal

The Association of Nigerian Professionals in Europe, ANPE, has praised Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara‘s leadership style, describing him as an asset to Nigeria’s democracy.

The group emphasised that Governor Fubara’s approach to politics is still relatively rare in Nigeria’s dynamic political landscape.

In a statement signed by its President, Dr Reginald Agamah, ANPE noted that despite distractions from disgruntled politicians in the state, Governor Fubara’s achievements in just one year in office are far-reaching and worthy of commendations.

Dr Agamah lauded Governor Fubara for resisting the urge to use the distractions he faced from state actors as an excuse not to perform.

He admonished detractors to give Rivers State time to heal and be better positioned for development.

“The Association of Nigerian Professionals in Europe, ANPE, commend Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State for his unique approach to governance,” the statement said. We commend the Governor for prioritising the interest of Rivers people over politics.

“Governor Fubara’s brand of politics is still relatively rare in Nigeria’s dynamic political landscape, resembling the egalitarianism of Abraham Lincoln. His personal political philosophy is worthy of emulation.

“Without sounding immodest and backed by empirical evidence, Governor Sim Fubara stands tall today amongst his colleagues as a peerless brand of humility, integrity, prudence, love for the people, honesty of purpose, candour, and a patriotic fervour still uncommon in Nigerian effervescent political horizon.

“Little wonder why he has garnered attention from both political and non-political circles due to his distinctive style of politicking. Governor Fubara has been rightly crowned the ‘Governor of the Year’ in his first year in office as a first-termer by several national and international publications, professional bodies, civil society organisations et al.

“We are very happy and want to extend our appreciation to Governor Sim, as he is fondly called by the people, for not letting Rivers people down despite the array of distractions he is facing in office. We commend him for not drowning in the pool of antics of detractors and saboteurs. He has demonstrated a strong character and unparalleled sagacity. He has no doubt presented himself as an asset to Nigeria’s democracy. His steadfastness is not only a win for Rivers people but also a victory for Nigeria’s democracy, especially against godfatherism.

“We commend the Governor for not allowing detractors to deter him from delivering good governance to Rivers people. No one would have thought that an embattled Governor would embark on an ambitious project like the Port Harcourt Ring Road project, which Fubara’s administration flagged off on 17 July 2023; the largest infrastructure project by a State Government in Nigeria. His achievements across critical sectors such as health, education, agriculture, human capital development, and security are quite commendable. Governor Fubara’s revitalization efforts are self-evident and realistic.

“We, therefore, admonish detractors to give Rivers State time to heal. The state is still bleeding from the destabilization orchestrated by disgruntled politicians and saboteurs.

“The Association of Nigerian Professionals in Europe commend Rivers people for their unwavering support for their beloved Governor Sim. They recognize his immense potential, sagacity, and visionary leadership, supported by undeniable evidence. We share their sentiments wholeheartedly. With Sim Fubara, one can only anticipate quality and unparalleled governance.

“We also commend the peace-loving Governor Fubara for his leadership instinct which is responsible for the relative peace in the state. It is on record that the Governor is sustaining the peace in the State by complying with the Rivers Peace Accord signed at the behest of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, despite the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike and his allies disregarding the 8-point agreement. This not only shows that Fubara is committed to lasting peace in the state but also demonstrates that he is, indeed a man of integrity. Governor Fubara is the kind of leader Nigerians long for.”

You Are Doing Well, South-West Youths Tell Minister Tijani, NCC Boss

The South-West Progressive Youths (SWPY) has commended the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, and the EVC/CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Aminu Maida for their leadership and contributions to the country’s digital advancement.

Under the guidance of Minister Tijani and the regulatory oversight of EVC/CEO Maida, the group said Nigeria has witnessed significant strides in the development of its digital economy, including the implementation of various initiatives to enhance digital infrastructure, promote innovation, and foster inclusive economic growth.

A statement signed by its President Comrade Yusuf Taiwo acknowledged their tireless effort to position Nigeria as a leader in the digital space, creating a conducive environment for businesses to thrive, entrepreneurs to innovate, and citizens to access essential services.

Taiwo highlighted Tijani’s impact on digital economy policy and strategy, national broadband plan, digital literacy, contribution to GDP and consumer protection.

“One of Minister Tijani’s most notable achievements is the successful launch of the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS). This landmark policy has served as a roadmap for Nigeria’s digital transformation, providing a framework for the development of the country’s digital economy,” Taiwo said.

“The National Broadband Plan (NBP) was developed to increase broadband penetration and availability across Nigeria. The plan has led to significant improvements in internet access, with broadband penetration increasing from 20% to 40% in just two years.

“Minister Tijani has also introduced initiatives to enhance digital literacy and skills, empowering millions of Nigerians to participate in the digital economy. The Digital Skills Development Program, launched under his leadership, has trained over 1 million Nigerians in digital skills, preparing them for the jobs of the future.

“The Minister has facilitated the deployment of 5G networks in Nigeria, positioning the country as a leader in the adoption of this cutting-edge technology. The rollout of 5G networks has significantly improved internet speeds, enabling Nigerians to access digital services more efficiently.

“Under his leadership, the telecommunications sector has contributed substantially to Nigeria’s GDP, with the sector growing by over 15% in the past year.
Tijani has also prioritized consumer protection, introducing measures to protect Nigerians from unsolicited telemarketing messages and calls.”

Speaking on Maida, Taiwo added that the NCC has made significant strides in spectrum allocation, assigning new frequencies to telecoms operators, and fostering a more competitive and inclusive telecoms market.

“Maida has also played a pivotal role in the successful deployment of 5G services in Nigeria, revolutionizing the country’s telecommunications landscape and positioning Nigeria as a hub for digital innovation in West Africa. The NCC, under Maida’s guidance, has intensified efforts to expand broadband coverage and access, aiming to bridge the digital divide and promote economic growth.

“Maida has prioritized cybersecurity, collaborating with stakeholders to develop and implement robust measures to safeguard the nation’s cyberspace and protect telecoms infrastructure. The EVC has fostered stronger partnerships between the NCC, telecoms operators, and other stakeholders, promoting a culture of cooperation and driving progress in the sector.

“Maida has also emphasized the importance of human capital development, initiating training programs and capacity-building initiatives for NCC staff, telecoms professionals, and other stakeholders.”

While calling on other government appointees to emulate Tijani and Maida, the group urged them to continue to use their expertise and strategic direction to shape the country’s telecoms future.

Niger’s Journey of Redemption Under Governor Bago

Niger’s Journey of Redemption Under Governor Bago By Paul Dickson

As the esteemed Warren Bennis so eloquently articulated, “Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality,” a sentiment that finds profound resonance in the transformative narrative of Niger State, a region that once shone brightly as a paragon of progress and development, only to succumb to the ravages of neglect and decay over the course of three decades. Nevertheless, with the ascendance of Governor Umar Bago’s administration, the state has embarked upon a truly remarkable journey of redemption, one characterized by a visionary leadership that has steadfastly committed to revitalizing the state’s infrastructure, catalyzing economic growth, and enhancing the overall quality of life for its citizens. Through a plethora of innovative projects and initiatives, Governor Bago has demonstrated an unwavering dedication to translating his vision for a resurgent Niger State into tangible reality, thereby embodying the very essence of leadership as so succinctly defined by Warren Bennis.

The administration has taken proactive steps to address the decay of infrastructure in Niger State. One of the most significant achievements of the Bago administration is the comprehensive overhaul of the state’s road network. With the approval of federal authorities, his government has taken over the rehabilitation of critical federal roads, ensuring seamless connectivity and facilitating economic growth. To date, the administration has constructed an impressive 1,000 kilometers of roads, including 400 kilometers of federal roads, thereby enhancing the state’s transportation infrastructure. This initiative has greatly improved connectivity and transportation within the state, boosting trade and commerce.

Agriculture has also received a significant boost under Governor Bago’s leadership. In pursuit of food sufficiency, the administration has purchased 300 tractors to bolster food production, demonstrating a clear commitment to agricultural development. This initiative has empowered local farmers, enhanced productivity, and contributed to the state’s economic growth. Additionally, the state has established a N3.5 billion Agricultural Development Fund to not only encourage youth participation in agriculture but also address economic and social essentials. This move not only enhances food production but also provides employment opportunities for the citizens, thereby improving their standard of living.

Niger State’s revitalized emphasis on agriculture is not only opportune but also harmonizes perfectly with the overarching national strategy to reinvigorate Nigeria’s quest for sustainable food security and economic prosperity. It is undeniable that Nigeria is currently grappling with what can be aptly described as economic instability, and mitigating this predicament necessitates a collective and concerted commitment to bolster agricultural advancement, thereby fostering a robust and resilient economic foundation for the nation.

The education sector, a vital cornerstone of societal development, has received paramount attention and consideration under Governor Bago’s visionary leadership. His unwavering commitment to education is manifest in concrete actions, such as the prompt settlement of outstanding fees owed by the state government to examination bodies, thereby demonstrating a tangible dedication to education reform. Furthermore, his administration has generously awarded scholarships to 1,530 final-year secondary school students, a testament to Governor Bago’s unrelenting passion for empowering the next generation through quality education. Additionally, a comprehensive renovation of dilapidated educational institutions has been ongoing, ensuring a conducive learning environment for students, while also upholding the Free Basic Education policy in the state, thereby fostering a culture of inclusivity and equal access to education for all. This gesture has not only alleviated the financial burden on students but also motivated them to pursue their academic goals with renewed enthusiasm.

However, the healthcare sector has also witnessed significant progress under Governor Bago’s leadership. The ongoing construction of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University Teaching Hospital in Minna is a landmark project that will revolutionize healthcare delivery in the state. This state-of-the-art facility will provide citizens with access to quality medical care, reducing the need for medical tourism and enhancing the overall well-being of the population. Governor Mohammed Bago presided over the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding MoU between Niger Foods Ltd and The Niger State Contributory Healthcare Agency (NiCare) to provide access to health insurance for farmers in the state, ensuring a safer health for a healthy production and sustainability.

In addition to these projects, Governor Bago’s administration has also made significant strides in the areas of water supply, electricity generation, and youth empowerment. The administration’s commitment to providing clean water and electricity to all citizens has led to the construction of new water treatment plants and the upgrade of existing power infrastructure. Furthermore, the government’s youth empowerment programs have provided training and employment opportunities for thousands of young people, reducing unemployment and fostering economic growth.

Governor Bago’s administration has been marked by a commitment to developmental policies and a dedication to engaging indigenous professionals in all projects. This approach has not only ensured the quality of the projects but also fostered a sense of ownership and pride among the citizens. This initiative is not just about providing financial aid; it is about investing in the future of the state.

Governor Umar Bago’s administration has undoubtedly ushered in a new era of redemption for Niger State. Through his unwavering commitment to development, the state has witnessed a transformative resurgence in infrastructure, agriculture, education, and healthcare. As the state’s motto aptly puts it, “the power state,” Governor Bago’s actions have truly upheld the spirit of progress and development that Niger State was once known for.

The resurgence of Niger State is a clear demonstration that with the right leadership, commitment, and policies, a state can rise from the ashes and reclaim its glory. The touch of an extraordinary man called Mohammed Bago, gave Niger state an extraordinary rebirth. As the state continues on this path of redemption, its citizens can look forward to a brighter future, filled with hope and prosperity.

Rivers: APC-PDP Youth Forum Commends Court Judgement Nullifying Amendment of LG Law

Rivers: APC-PDP Youth Forum Commends Court Judgement Nullifying Amendment of LG Law

The APC-PDP Youth Forum has welcomed the court judgement invalidating the amended Local Government Law proposed by the Martins Amaewhule faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

In a statement signed by its chairman, Comrade Nwogu Benjamin, the group which comprises leaders from the political parties, described the ruling as sound, impartial and outstanding.

The judgement was delivered in a suit numbered PHC/1320/CS/2024 which challenged the extension of tenure for LG chairmen for six months after the expiration of their term.

Justice D.G. Kio, presiding over the case, declared the amendment invalid, citing its inconsistency with the 1999 Constitution and Section 9(1) of the Rivers State Local Government law No. 5 of 2018.

Benjamin said the court has done justice to the spirit of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, thus saving the nation from the stranglehold of anarchists, emperors and saboteurs who mean no well for our democracy.

“We warmly commend the judiciary for its courageous and landmark judgment invalidating the amended local government law in Rivers State. This decision is a triumph of justice and a testament to the independence and integrity of our judicial system,” the group said.

“By this judgement, the proposed extension of the tenure of local government chairmen by six months after the expiration of their term has been declared invalid. Also, the governor still has the power to suspend local government council chairmen and appoint caretaker committees.

“By striking down the amended law, the court has upheld the principles of democracy, rule of law, and good governance. This judgment is a victory for the people of Rivers State and a reminder that the judiciary remains a bastion of hope for justice and accountability.

“We applaud the judges for their bravery and commitment to upholding the constitution and the law. Their decision demonstrates that the judiciary is willing to stand up for what is right, even in the face of adversity.

“We urge all stakeholders to respect the judgment and work towards entrenching democratic values and the rule of law in Rivers State. This judgment is a step forward in our quest for a more just and equitable society.”

NASRE Media Foundation Partners with Leadway Assurance and Presidency To Deliver Health, Education Support To Ailing and Deceased Journalists’ Families

NASRE Media Foundation Partners with Leadway Assurance and Presidency To Deliver Health, Education Support To Ailing and Deceased Journalists’ Families

NASRE Media Foundation, the humanitarian arm of the Nigerian Association of Social and Resourceful Editors (NASRE), extended support to media practitioners facing health or financial challenges, as well as the families of bereaved journalists, on Tuesday, May 14, 2024.

Ably supported by Leadway Assurance, one of Nigeria’s leading insurance companies specializing in life-business coverage and prompt claims payment, and the office of the Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagements, South West, the Foundation provided cash and grains to selected beneficiaries in the first phase.

Mr. Omodele Adigun, a former Deputy Business Editor at The Sun Newspaper, who is currently battling partial stroke, received cash and grains for health support. Mrs. Esther Peter Thomas, wife of the late Peter Thomas, a renowned entertainment editor and publicist for the former Mo’Hits Records, also received cash and grains support.

Similarly, Mrs. Adewole, the widow of the late Qudus Adewole, publisher of Ebony Media who passed away in 2021, received educational support and grains on behalf of their daughter, Yesmee, who was born shortly after Adewole’s death. In the same vein, Mr. Bolu received equivalent support on behalf of Peter, the only surviving son of the late Foluso Samuel, who worked with Encomium Magazine but passed away in 2015. Foluso Samuel’s wife and two of their three children have also died, leaving Peter, a JSS student, in Mr. Bolu’s care.

In a unanimous voice, the recipients prayed for the continued success of NASRE Media Foundation, Leadway Assurance, and the Presidency.

With discernible emotions and tears in their eyes, Mr. Adigun, Mrs. Esther Peter Thomas, Mrs. Adewole, and Mr. Bolu described NASRE as a dynamic group of experienced media professionals whose efforts are highly commendable. They prayed for the continued success of NASRE Media Foundation, Leadway Assurance, and the office of the Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagements, South West.

In an earlier remark, the President of NASRE and NASRE Media Foundation, Comrade Femi Oyewale, assured the recipients of continued support within available resources. He noted that NASRE Media Foundation was initiated to support media practitioners facing challenges. Stressing the need for support, Oyewale called on corporate organizations, public and private institutions, and individuals to support NASRE Media Foundation in whatever way possible.

https://nasre.ng/nasre-media-foundation-supports-journalists-facing-challenges/

“Media work is hazardous. We take the highest form of risks. We are on the road even in the middle of the night, ensuring that governments and institutions’ actions are anchored in truth for the overall benefit of citizens and taxpayers. The risks we embrace daily take a toll on our health, and when most of us are either deceased or down with ailments, nobody cares for us. These are part of the reasons we set up this Foundation to provide hope for colleagues in the face of hopelessness,” he explained.

Oyewale emphasized that the support extended to the four beneficiaries is just a small step given the large number of media practitioners on NASRE Media Foundation’s list who have truly pathetic cases and need support. “We are not going to rest on our oars. We have a long list of journalists and families of late journalists who need help. Some of the cases are really pathetic. We are committed to this noble cause. This is just the first phase,” Oyewale assured.

“I thank NASRE members for their commitment and dedication. I thank Leadway Assurance Plc and the office of the Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagements in South West for their support. We couldn’t have done this without you,” he appreciated.

“I call on corporate organizations, public and private institutions, and individuals to team up with NASRE Media Foundation in supporting journalists facing challenges to minimize the suffering associated with the job,” Oyewale, who was represented at the event by Idumonza Isidahomhen, Vice President of NASRE, requested.

Lagos Assembly Plans Geographic Information Law

Lagos Assembly Plans Geographic Information Law
– bill will create comprehensive database of Lagos state
– will curb issues involved in land ownership

A new bill that seeks to harmonise all geographic information service projects of Lagos is under consideration at the State House of Assembly.

The Lagos Geographic Information Service bill, which had stakeholders making contributions on Friday, is also aimed at establishing a computerised central database for all information relating to geospatial matters and related issues.

Section 4(2) of the bill says the agency’s responsibilities include introducing, implementing and sustaining best practices for all Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in the state as well as “develop and maintain an online platform that will contain all information and statistics on geospatial-related matters.”

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, said the bill, when passed, would help in improving governance and boosting professionalism.

“It is targeted at integrating governance with advancements in technology. This is something we hope to always take advantage of so that our state can continue to be ahead in the area of development,” Dr. Obasa, represented by Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, a member of the House, said adding that the Assembly will always make the residents of the state its focal point.

Chairman of the House Committee on Physical Planning and Urban Development, Hon. Ogunkelu Sylvester, said the bill “shows a commitment and sincere
sense of duty on the part of the legislators of the state to put people’s interest at heart.

“Today’s public hearing means a lot to the improvement of
information technology and computerised central database in Lagos State.”

Ogunkelu, who represents Epe Constituency 2 at the House, described it as a bill that will cover the database of Lagos just as he commended the Speaker for his passion for the progress of the State.

“The bill will guide the government to have a database of everything concerning Lagos and in this case, you could be in your house and apply for a certificate of ownership on your property and have it without even visiting the Ministry.

“It will also cut sharp practices and curb fraudulent sales of land. For land, the database will have details of owners including their photographs,” he said.

Rasheed Makinde, a former lawmaker, commended the House for its proactiveness while some of the stakeholders suggested the involvement of professional bodies in the proposed law.
