Poet and Social Activist, Valentine Okolo, talks on Rape, Genocide, and the Power of Words

Valentine Okolo

Poet and social activist, Valentine Okolo, speaks in this interview to Godwin Iheancho about his thought provoking poetry book, ‘I Will Be Silent’.

Excerpt…

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

I got it from the title of a poem I wrote called “I Will Be Silent.” This was a poem I wrote concerning the genocide which happened in Darfur, Sudan, many years ago. I wrote it in response to the then international media blackout that occurred during that period and how men and young male children were systematically slaughtered by government supported Janjaweed militia. And how women were also gang raped, and impregnated by their oppressors, and sometimes mutilated.

In genocides rape is most times weaponized by the aggressive side, and the suffering sides to such wickedness are women, old and young. Such actions tear at my core and reveal mankind’s depravity at its worst. That poem and a few others similar to it form the back bone of the book.

Genocides, sex slavery, rape and a few other indignities suffered by many women in improvished regions of the world continue still. Boko Haram, and it’s aftermath, the Fulani Herdsmen follow in the footsteps of the Janjaweed militia in Sudan which commited those attrocities with government blessings.

In Nigeria, it is apparent that the government is in accord with Boko Haram and the Fulani Herdsmen as it has repeatedly played to the gallery whenever it is called to question regarding the poor equipments deployed and the improvishment of military troops sent to the effected regions to combat the insurgency. Rather, they result in the use of euphemisms by calling the terrorists “Bandits” and the deployment of mass media propaganda to negate the seriousness of the insurgency.

The entire idea of the book is centred around the themes of pain, and perseverance that these people, and may more like them in different regions of the world, face and have to endure constantly.

I Will Be Silent is not just a book to me. It is more than that. It is a call to witness. It is a series of poems which proceed not from the heart but from the gut of tribulation and endurance. It is a book which bears witness to the collected voices who cannot speak for themselves because they have been silenced.

How do you get inspired to write?

Most times I feel the emotions of others when I write. In those moments I become that which I write about. I see with their eyes, I hear with their ears, I feel with their skin. In those moments I cease to be myself, and become someone else. I become her, they, it. I become someone’s dreams. And relive, sometimes, their nightmares.

I write from a place of suffering. From a place of joy. I explore the two extremes in my poetry.

In my book I Will Be Silent I wrote many poems which grew from those two extremes. Or should I say, some poems made me write them inspired by these extremes of human existence.

I most times don’t plan a poem in advance. Some poems, if I may use the expression, fall at my feet, almost fully formed. They are a few poems, however, that I do make plans to write in advance. And in order to write them I have to enter into a period of poetic gestation. A period in which I allow the idea of the poem to take root and grow within me until it is ready to be birthed. Sometimes the gestation period may take a few days. Sometimes it can take months or even years.

I like writing organically. So I don’t force anything out. I allow myself to be. I allow myself to feel. I allow the words to come to me like the wind. And I try to catch whatever message that is whispered in the breeze.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

First, they should close their eyes and feel. And then write what they felt. Some of the notable works of literature (which includes fiction, non fiction, poetry, science fiction and so on) were written from an abundance of feelings. If you don’t feel what you have written, don’t expect someone else to feel it too. (Unless, you want to be too intellectual and write drab college textbooks.)

Your writing has to move you first before you expect it to move someone else. Write what you feel first. Then put it away for awhile, and then look at it again with the eyes of a stranger. If you read what you had written earlier with the stranger’s eyes and say to yourself: “Wow! Did I write this?” Then someone else will also be wowed by it as well.

Words convey emotions. Be successful in conveying your emotions in your lines.

Next is style.

If expressing your emotions is fuel for your writing, see style as your technique for progress.

See writing as you would a dance in progress. A dancer may have the necessary energy to prance about. But this prancing alone without an arranged motion may not result in anything beautiful to behold. A dancer uses learned dancing techniques and translates those techniques and that energy into beautiful motions (insert here any dance style of your choice: ballet, foxtrot, salsa, tango, hip-hop, contemporary, and so on). When done properly these motions of choreography capture your attention. For a writer, style is like those beautiful motions. Some you can learn from the writings of someone else. Some you can teach yourself.

If you can afford it, enrol into a good writing class with a teacher that you respect his or her style of writing. Such a person will help ground you in the proper techniques of sentence constructions, and the proper use of words, characterizations and lots more.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

It allows me to state what I feel. It allows me to display on a blank page the potency of my thoughts. I am a poet. And I write poetry. And to me words are not just a means of communication. To me words are life. Words carry with them a strong creative force. A force that makes things happen. The first thing that happened in the creation of this planet was the issue of a command. From God Almighty Himself. As documented in the Bible book of Genesis where it was written that there was darkness every where and the Earth was void and without form and the Spirit of God was hovering over the deep. And God Himself uttered the immortal words that started the beginning of life in this world. He said: “Let there be light.” And lo, light came to be. And illuminated the perpetual darkness.

Jesus Christ Himself used words to heal. It was written in the Gospels that He issued words of command and the blind were made to see, the lame walk, and the diseased were made clean. Even to the point of raising the dead. The words: “Lazarus, come forth!” are perhaps one of the most unforgettable lines I have ever read in any form of literature. Because they were more than just words. A mummified man who was dead for four days heard them from beyond the grave and rose to life!

How do you deal with writer’s block?

I empty my mind. And do something else that is not related to what I am writing about. Sometimes I take long walks, and focus on being in the present. As I walk, I take note of the rise and fall of the land, the diverse faces of people, the roaming animals, and the sounds coming from cars and motorcycles. Most times when I do this ideas flow to me freely, clearing my imaginative inhibitors.

If music be the food of love, play on, William Shakespeare said in the first line of the play Twelfth Night asking for music after he was frustrated in courtship.

It opens the secret of life bringing peace, abolishing strife.” On those he looked up to, he said “I started music at a time when Nigerian artists only look up to American artists. So, on the international scene I would say Wyclef Jean, Nas, Nate Dogg and back home people like Mode9, 2Face, 9ice Burna boy and few others I can’t remember right now”.

Meanwhile, as Nigeria artistes continue to make fame breaking world records but still live in penury, King Omo Eqo has this to say “If I’m given an opportunity to change something about the music industry in Nigeria it will be our publishing and distribution network because artist hardly make a living doing music due to poor publishing and distribution network.” He concluded

According to Qhemmy (full name Oluwakemi Onasanya) “Doors of Mercy” is a contemporary cover for a 70-year old church hymn I used to sing as a child. It was inspired by the suffering and fear that COVID-19 has unleashed upon people across Nigeria and the entire world.

“But my new song, the lyrics and gentle melody of which everyone can easily sing along with, is a collective call unto God Almighty not to forsake humanity in the throes of this pandemic. And I know that all those who call upon the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Qhemmy’s “Doors of Mercy” – produced by a church label VilleMEDIA – is coming on the heels of “Oloore” (Benefactor) fourth single, which she released last year, bringing to five, the singles she has done in piecing together her maiden album slated for end 2020.

Meet Diaz, Brazil-Based Identical Music Duo, Waiting To Explode

There’s a new pair of musical duo in town, Brazil based identical twins of Nigerian descent who’re the next entertainment bomb, waiting to explode.

When this talented duo will eventually be standing before God at the end of this life, they might not have a single bit of their talents left, and could tell the creator, ‘we’ve used everything you gave us., Yes, they’re this passionate about life, career and are being success driven by determination.

The story of Taiwo and Kehinde Afolabi is such an interesting episode worth trying out in a movie script. The identical twins who have passion for humanity are a bunch of talents who have crisscrossed almost a few career fields before taking a dramatic entrance into the showbiz world.

According to the identical twins who live in Brazil, “we’ve always known we’ll end up doing music but the need to satisfy our parents’ career plans informed our early adventures in other fields”, they confessed.

The Afolabi Twins who have decided to honour their Brazilian godfather’s name, Diaz as stage name speak about 4 international languages-Japanese, Portuguese, Chinese and English, “we started life, after our secondary school education by studying Japanese language for a year in Nigeria with the hopes of moving to Japan for further studies but we later jettisoned the idea when we wrote JAMB and got admission at the University of Ilorin for International Studies.

The plan changed again when one of the duo, Taiwo who’s a talented footballer got admission, through a sponsor, into a football academy in Brazil to pursue her ambition as a foreign footballer. She was later signed to play for Guarani FC and Jaguariuna FC, both teams in Sao Paulo State before her sister, Kehinde joined her 7 months later.

Their quests for knowledge informed another decision to go back to school to study International Relations and Political Science before floating an NGO, Youths Without Barriers, a nonprofit making organization that became a human rights organization representing Nigerians in Brazilian prisons helping them to get defense lawyers and elaborate projects to immerse immigrants into the Brazilian system.

The talented duo who’ll soon drop their debut single composes and performs songs for human rights, the environment, girls and women’s causes.

UK-Based Nollywood Actress, Princess Elizabeth Onanuga talks on Covid-19

UK-Based Nollywood Actress, Princess Elizabeth Onanuga has for the first time made her opinion about Covid-19 known. She made this revelation in an interview session via social media by this publication. She talked on what she feels about the virus, her contributions so far and urged the Nigerian government to remember the citizens. Excerpts:

How would you describe this season?

It’s a very tough season for everyone, nothing is working anywhere in the world, literally, the world is on total lockdown due to the sudden pandemic that struck the world. It’s a very ugly situation because people find it hard to survive, for over a month, organizations have shut down, it’s really crazy.

How has it affected you?

Of a truth, Covid-19 has affected everyone, as an actress, I had planned to release my recent movie titled ‘Too Much’. We have the posters everywhere on the internet, on newspapers before the covid-19 issue came in but since then, I have not been able to do a lot. Apart from that, I’m a business person in the United Kingdom, I haven’t been able to go to work, because of the fear of this deadly virus.

In the United Kingdom, what efforts are the government making to support the needy?

The government here is doing fantastic, the government has given out food items, cash, other palliative packages to the citizens who can’t feed this season, they have been awesome. I wish the government of Nigeria can emulate this kind of gesture, it will really go a long way.

How would you say celebrities like you have contributed to Nigerians at this period?

Personally, I have done the little I can do, because I am not in Nigeria at the moment, there is a limit to what I can do but notwithstanding, I have distributed food items to the old ones in some parts of Nigeria. Other celebrities have done giveaways to people too, I can say celebrities have done very well in that aspect.

What Advice do you have for Nigerians?

I will advice Nigerians not to mind the conspiracy theories flying around but they should ensure they follow the necessary measures that the NCDC have set. They should maintain social distance, wash their hands regularly, make use of face-masks, take lemon and ginger, above all, pray.

IYKE KANU EMERGES AGN PATRON AS “OPERATION LAST DANCE” PREMIERS

The Chairman of Icecos Energy Limited and National Mandate Newspaper, Dr. Iyke Kanu has emerged Patron of Actors Guild of Nigeria at the just concluded 9th Biennial Lecture and Launching / Premiering of “Operation Last Dance” with theme “The Strategic Role of Nollywood in the Nigerian Economy” held at the expansive Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Hotel, Abuja on Wednesday 11th March, 2020, by the Guild under the leadership of Emeka Rollas Ejezie.

Other notable personalities that were inducted alongside Dr. Kanu are the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.- Gen. Tukur Buratai, Senator Ishaku Abbo, Dr. Chris Okafor, Dr. Nasir El-Rufai, Sen. Ifeanyi Uba, Chief Godswill Akpabio, Prince Ned Nwoko, who was named Chairman of Patrons, etc.

In his speech, Dr. Kanu who served as the chairman of the occasion recalled how in 1957 the movie, “Fincho” by Sam Zebba heralded the birth of what is today known as Nollywood, followed closely by “Kadara” in 1980, before the 1992 blockbuster “Living in Bondage,” that ultimately announced the readiness of Nollywood to take the world by storm, and trust there have been no looking back since then.

He further said that the theatrical prowess and cinematic efforts of first generation legends like Hubert Ogunde, Adeyemi Afolayan, Pete Edochie, Tunde Kelani,  Taiwo Ajai-Lycett, Adebayo Salami,  Olu Jacobs,  Ladi Ladebo, Jide Kosoko,  Moses Olaiya, Sadiq Daba, Afolabi Adesanya among others, played a pivotal role in shaping the film industry to its enviable heights and after them, Nollywood has never at any time been short of talents.

The industry has blossomed, evolved and grown in every facets of film making, thereby positioned as unarguably one of the leading employers of labour in Nigeria.  Though highly pertinent to note that with involvement of government and other investors, the industry has the posture to eclipse its present status in a short while, he said.

This sector beyond contributing to the nation’s GDP, growing the tourism sector of the economy and positioning itself as the biggest promoter of the brand Nigeria, within and outside the shores of this nation has churned out notable heroes over the last seven decades of its existence.

Nollywood over time has proven to be a strong catalyst for preservation of our cultural heritage as a people which is at the verge of extinct on the accounts of influx of western culture.   The adaptation of national histories and cultures into movies has been a tool to educate this generation and the one to come of the labours of our heroes past.

It is on record that the film industry offers potentials for economic, social mobilization and political cohesion and it is necessary for government to tap into wide film market and readiness of stakeholders to revamp the sector to be the largest singular contributor to GDP and job creation outside oil.  He said

My honest submission here today is that if government should be ready to grow revenue from other sectors beyond oil, the creative industry should be the first to take advantage of, galvanize support for an investors-friendly industry, promulgate laws that will regulate and protect contents and fight piracy, provide social security framework for stakeholders and support the sector with take-off grants through all the guilds that make up the industry and in no distance time, Nollywood boost our GDP by 10%, he posited emphatically.

Beyond all, Nollywood has been a tool for mass mobilization and dissemination of information as most of their films has been positioned to fight one social ill in the society or others just like the one that is premiered today, “Operation Last Dance”. He concluded.

AGN President, Emeka Rollas said Dr. Kanu’s choice for inauguration as Patron is as a result of his huge moral and financial support to the Guild over the years and urged other well-meaning Nigerians to emulate his philanthropic gestures.

The high point of the well-attended event is the unveiling of the prototype proposed film village which drew applause and support of the special guests present including Dr. Kanu who pledged to be financially involved in the project.
