APC chief Afegbua blames Nigeria’s woes on citizens’ attitude

A member of the All Progressives Congress, Kassim Afegbua, has declared that Nigeria’s challenges stem from an “attitudinal deficit” among its citizens, rather than a fundamental failure of the nation itself.

He disclosed this while criticising the opposition, accusing them of grandstanding without offering tangible alternative solutions to national issues.

Speaking on the Arise TV Morning Show on Saturday, Afegbua did not mince words when discussing the current political landscape.

He expressed little surprise at the opposition’s perceived lack of constructive engagement, stating that “typical of Nigerian opposition, they know how to grandstand, but address the critical issue based on alternative viewpoints, it becomes a problem for them.

“Still searching for their alternative policy formation, in terms of even suggestions or ideas that can help deepen the conversation around governance in this country.”

Afegbua also took the opportunity to commend President Bola Tinubu for his “bold decision” to immediately remove the fuel subsidy upon assuming office.

He drew a sharp contrast with opposition figures like Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, who, he claimed, campaigned on the promise of subsidy removal but “never meant it.”

According to Afegbua, Tinubu’s swift action to confront the subsidy issue head-on was a strategic move to tackle difficult decisions upfront.

He argued that any delay would have allowed “economic predators and buccaneers who were feasting on the subsidy” to derail the entire process.

The APC chieftain then challenged politicians and aspiring leaders to diligently scrutinise how increased allocations are being utilised by state governments following the subsidy removal.

“I want a position, you know, politicians and those who are prepared to think that they want to come and preside over the country, to be interrogating the resources that are coming to the states, because we now have more allocation being given to the state,” Afegbua stated.

He emphasised the need for transparency and collaboration between federal, state, and local governments to ensure these funds translate into improved lives for ordinary citizens.

Highlighting the broader societal responsibility, Afegbua dismissed the notion of national failure, instead pointing to a deeper internal issue.

“You know, the problem that somebody was discussing with me today and said Nigeria has failed. I said, No, it is not the country that has failed. It is Nigerians who are in the country, because there is, see, we need a serious attitudinal reorientation of minds amongst us.”

He urged the opposition and other stakeholders to engage in “constructive criticism, constructive engagement, and collective bargaining” rather than blanket condemnation, asserting that such positive contributions would “add value to what the government is doing.”

Afegbua also pointed to the emergence of CNG and electric vehicles, as well as deepening infrastructure in road and rail transportation, as positive outcomes of the subsidy removal, envisioning a better future for Nigerians as these initiatives materialise.

Oshiomhole, Sowore disagree on Nigeria’s democracy

2023 Presidential Candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, and the Senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole, on Thursday disagreed over Nigeria’s democratic model with both men expressing variant views on the progress of democracy in Nigeria since 1999.

Sowore, while speaking during a panel session of a book launch written by Senator Abdul Oroh’s “Demonstration of Craze: Struggles and Transition to Democracy in Nigeria”, stated that the country’s transition to democracy in 1999 was hijacked by those he referred to as charlatans, adding that pro-democracy activists at the time of transition to a democratic government “made a mistake”, by allowing only a set of persons to acquire power for themselves.

“There was a mistake we must admit to that we made when democracy came about in 1999. In all fairness, we shouldn’t have allowed charlatans to hijack the democratic process; we did.

“And we are guilty of where we are today. In the US, they refer to democracy as government of the people, by the people and for the people.

“Abdul’s book title refers to democracy as ‘demonstration of craze’.

“But I have always referred to Nigerian democracy as ‘morontocracy’, a democracy that was hijacked by morons, and that is the result you can get,” Sowore said.

The two-time Presidential Candidate of the AAC argued that the government of the day still persecuted civil rights activists because there was no structure put in place to guarantee the fundamental human rights and well-being of citizens in the country, stating that countries like South Africa had a democracy that ensured that those who fought against the apartheid were rewarded.

Addressing the forthcoming elections in 2027, Sowore stated that what the country had during the 2023 general elections was a selection, adding that the country might witness another selective process in 2027.

He further alleged that the biggest culprits during the elections were the security agents who helped political office holders to rig elections, and not just the Independent National Electoral Commission.

“I have been introduced here as a Presidential Candidate; it is true that I ran for election twice in this country.

“Although I ran for election, I only saw on the day of the election a selection. And if we are not careful, which I’m sure you all know, the day will pass, and a set of people will have also selected themselves in power. And nothing will change in our lives.

“And I can say this because I know what we now have in terms of our electoral politics, that whoever you see in INEC today is most likely an APC card-carrying member.

“And for those of you who think INEC is the problem, you are making a mistake. The biggest people who rig elections in Nigeria, who fix selection, are in the military, the security services. I was in the DSS when the Kogi election happened in 2019.

“They emptied the place; the only people that were left at the DSS were the guys who were guarding myself, and the guys at the gate.

“Every other person went to Kogi State to rig the election for Yahaya Bello. That is what will continue to happen in this country,” he said.

In response, Oshiomhole during his goodwill message, faulted Sowore’s cynicism and dismissal of the democratic process, arguing that many activists at the time shunned the call to be part of the fight to entrench a better model of democracy.

He urged leaders not to discourage citizens from believing in a better future, adding that the gaps in the democratic system should rather serve as an “incentive for us not to give up on ourselves.”

The senator said, ”In the course of talking, he (Sowore) said we made a mistake in not contesting in 1999. It is this same cynicism, doubt, dismissal, sweeping generalisation, that misled those, or some of those, who struggled for democracy, to say nothing good can come out of the military, they don’t mean it, there would be no election, a rat cannot give birth to a rabbit.

“There were all kinds of stories. How can the military midwife real democracy? No, it is not possible. Because it’s always better to dismiss everything to get louder applause.

“Then the bad guys decided, since you guys who fight keep dismissing those who were in charge of the system you want to change, we will go in there.

“They went in and they captured power, and they changed the culture of power, they changed the rules of the game.

“And I can speak with authority when I say that when you dismiss in a very sweeping manner that the country is hopeless, the system is impossible, so we should begin to cry? “

Oshiomhole urged leaders not to discourage hope, saying that while the past and present aren’t ideal, the gap between where we are and where we want to be should inspire us to keep striving.

Embrace financial discipline, savings culture, NDIC urges students

The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting financial literacy and savings culture among secondary school students in Sokoto State.

This pledge was made on Thursday by the NDIC Zonal Controller in Sokoto, Bello Usman-Kaoje, during a financial literacy training programme held at Government Day Secondary School, Kalambaina.

They brought together students from various secondary schools across the state.

Usman-Kaoje explained that the initiative is part of NDIC’s Corporate Social Responsibility aimed at instilling financial discipline, prudent spending, and effective money management in young Nigerians.

“This programme is organised in commemoration of the 2025 Financial Literacy Day, with the theme: ‘Think Before You Follow – Spend Money Wisely Tomorrow’,” he stated.

He noted that the NDIC has consistently engaged in mentoring students on the importance of saving and financial planning to equip them with the tools needed for responsible financial decision-making.

“The goal is to nurture a generation that understands the value of saving, budgeting, and investing, thereby contributing to the growth of the national economy,” Usman-Kaoje added.

He also warned students about the rising cases of financial fraud, particularly through online platforms and Point-of-Sale operators, urging them to be cautious and avoid falling prey to fraudulent schemes motivated by greed or the lure of quick gains.

Also, speaking at the event, Mr. Abubakar Usman of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Sokoto Branch, emphasised the role of regulated financial institutions, including commercial and microfinance banks, in safeguarding customer deposits and promoting secure financial transactions.

In a related presentation, Deputy Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Sokoto State Command, Aliyu Omama, cautioned students against drug abuse and its financial and social consequences.

Hajiya Mansura Abdulsalam, who spoke on behalf of the school principals, described the training as timely and impactful.

Abdulsalam encouraged students to apply the knowledge gained and cultivate healthy financial habits.

The event featured lectures, interactive sessions, and discussions on financial planning, fraud awareness, and the significance of long-term savings.

Join fight against corruption, ICPC urges youth

The Independent Corrupt Practices Commission has called for the active involvement of youths in the fight against corruption in the country.

The Resident Anti-corruption Commissioner in Osun State, Yusuf Olatunji, made the call on Wednesday in Osogbo during an anti-corruption competition organised by the Commission in collaboration with the Osun State Government for secondary school students in the state.

The ICPC boss said the fight against corruption is not a one-man war, adding that corruption portends danger to every sector of national life.

“The fight against corruption is not a one-man war; it requires collective responsibility, inter-agency synergy, and above all, the active involvement of our youths.

“The theme of this programme, ‘Corruption: A Virus That We Must Eradicate’, is profoundly relevant and timely. Just like a deadly virus, corruption infects every sector of our national life. It weakens our ever-joined institutions, distorts our values, deprives citizens of basic services, and stifles development.

“Like a virus, corruption mutates, it adapts, finds new hosts, and spreads across generations if left unchecked. And like a virus, it requires a deliberate, strategic, and well-coordinated response involving both prevention and enforcement,” Olatunji said.

Olatunji subsequently advised the younger generation to take the bull by the horns and make a difference in the fight against corruption, urging parents and teachers to be good role models to the younger ones.

He said, “You are not too young to make a difference. Your voices matter. Your creativity matters. Your ideals, when rooted in integrity, are powerful tools that can challenge societal norms and inspire others to do what is right.

“Let me emphasise this: the battle against corruption begins in the mind. It begins with personal choices, choosing to do your assignments honestly, refusing to engage in examination malpractice, reporting injustice when you see it, and treating others with fairness and respect. We must, therefore, continue to invest in character development and civic education. Our educational institutions must become sanctuaries of integrity and innovation.”

In his remarks at the event, the chairman of Osun State Universal Basic Education Board, Mr Ibukun Fadipe, who commended the organisers of the competition, said the state government would establish anti-corruption groups in the secondary schools across the state.

Ground rent hike is coming, says Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has revealed that his administration is considering an increase in ground rent payments, while describing the refusal to pay ground rent and other taxes as his greatest challenge in office.

The PUNCH reports that the FCT administration began sealing properties belonging to ground rent defaulters on Monday. These included the National Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party, the National Agency for Trafficking in Persons, the Federal Inland Revenue Service, a branch of Access Bank, and a TotalEnergies filling station.

The leadership of the PDP and the FIRS criticised the actions of the Wike-led FCTA, describing them as unprofessional and an affront to the country’s democracy.

President Bola Tinubu intervened, granting a 14-day ultimatum for the payment of the owed sums, as well as penalties ranging between N2 million and N3 million, depending on locations within the FCT.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday after inspecting ongoing projects in Abuja, Wike lamented that while residents demand infrastructure in the FCT, they fail to support the government by paying their taxes.

He noted that many debtors owe as much as 20 years’ worth of ground rent, despite the fact that the ground rent has remained unchanged for many years.

“My greatest challenge is the refusal of people to pay what they owe. I will elaborate on this in the next media chat. People want facilities, they want infrastructure, but nobody asks where the funds come from. Abuja is not an oil-producing city; we rely solely on taxes. These are not new taxes; they have been in place for years.

“It is unfortunate that many elites own houses overseas. They understand the consequences of not paying taxes abroad — such properties can be forfeited. Yet, when it comes to their own country, they refuse to comply simply because they believe there are no sanctions.

“Look at the arrears — 20, 30 years. And how much is it? We have not increased the ground rent, but we are working towards that, and I can assure you we will do so. The President has granted a two-week waiver. Let no one think that blackmail or intimidation will deter us; we will do what is necessary,” he stated.

The minister also disclosed that he had recently signed over 1,500 Certificates of Occupancy and Deeds of Assignment, while again urging residents to pay their taxes and ground rents to support development in the FCT.

“If you pay your taxes, you will see the difference it makes. That is what we are striving to achieve,” he added.

Yoruba council hails Tinubu’s IMF loan repayment

The Yoruba Council Worldwide has commended President Bola Tinubu for repaying the International Monetary Fund loan, describing it as a boost for Nigeria’s economy.

President of the group, Mr Oladotun Hassan, praised the move in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.

Hassan said the President had taken a commendable step towards economic recovery by relieving Nigeria of such a major financial obligation.

“I speak as president of the Yoruba Council Worldwide, representing indigenous Yoruba people at home and abroad, and we appreciate President Tinubu’s bold economic decisions.

“He deserves full support and prayers. He has proven his leadership capacity by ensuring the IMF loan has been successfully repaid,” Hassan said.

He further praised Tinubu’s decision to repurpose looted properties for public benefit, describing it as a clear sign of the fight against corruption.

Hassan also noted the President’s efforts to involve the youth through student loan schemes and the creation of a youth academy.

He stated that Nigeria’s global image is improving, and foreign policy is becoming stronger under Tinubu’s leadership.

“These achievements have brought support from various quarters, even opposition parties, with some endorsing him for a second term,” he said.

He cautioned the Afenifere group against turning the issue of power rotation into an ethnic conflict.

Hassan said Afenifere has the right to support any candidate but should not frame it as an ethnic necessity.

“Democracy isn’t about ethnic entitlement. Let’s assess the President’s performance during his eight years before making such demands.

“If Tinubu can pay the IMF loan, he can also reduce food prices significantly, which we’re already seeing.“Rice prices have dropped from N120,000 to around N50,000 per bag. That’s proof of his economic impact,” he added.

He said the President inherited a struggling system and has focused on rebuilding without blaming others or making excuses.

According to him, Tinubu is giving all Nigerians a chance to thrive through regional development commissions.

“This isn’t politics as usual. Tinubu appoints competent people to handle sensitive positions, not loyalists.

“He is ensuring that every region gets equal attention, regardless of the role of state governors.

“Considering our progress, Tinubu deserves to complete his eight-year term. This isn’t about re-election but continuing a working vision,” Hassan added.

He clarified that his remarks were not intended to criticise former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

He said opposition figures like Atiku should focus on supporting good governance rather than forcing themselves into power.

“Leadership can mean promoting good governance through cooperation, not just competition.

“There’s no reason Peter Obi and Tinubu can’t collaborate. They met in Rome and shared smiles, showing potential unity.

“They are not enemies. Nigerians should focus on how to support this government for the common good,” Hassan said.

The Federal Government recently confirmed repayment of the $3.4bn IMF emergency loan taken during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, said the repayment, approved by President Tinubu, restores Nigeria’s fiscal credibility.

He said it also addresses financial burdens inherited from past administrations.

Russia downed 77 Ukrainian drones overnight, its defence ministry said Thursday, two days after Kyiv carried out its largest direct strike on Moscow during the three-year war.

Thirty drones were intercepted and destroyed over the western Bryansk region bordering Ukraine while 25 more were downed over Kaluga, the ministry said in a statement.

More drones were intercepted over the regions of Kursk, Voronezh, Rostov and Belgorod, it added.

The latest barrage comes after Russia downed more than 90 drones in the capital region on Tuesday. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin called it the “most massive enemy drone attack on Moscow”.

Russia said three people died and several more were injured in Tuesday’s attack, which saw it intercept 337 Ukrainian drones across the country.

Multiple Ukrainian cities were also under attack Thursday morning, with a 42-year-old woman killed in Kherson, according to regional military administration head Roman Mrochko.

Authorities in Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk also reported coming under attack early Thursday.

Oluwatoyin Madein: Appraising the Apostle of Transparency By Ochonu Ochonu

Oluwatoyin Madein: Appraising the Apostle of Transparency

By Ochonu Ochonu

The Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) stands as the guardian of Nigeria’s treasury, a position established by Decree 43 of 1988. This esteemed office is reserved for exceptional individuals, handpicked by the President and entrusted with a four-year tenure. Chief Dr. Mrs. Oluwatoyin Madein is one such outstanding leader, whose appointment attests to her remarkable abilities.

Born in Iperu in Ikenne Local Government Area on the 7th day of March 1965, the distinguished goal-getter obtained a Higher National Diploma in Accountancy in 1988 from the Ogun State Polytechnic (presently Moshood Abiola Polytechnic) Abeokuta.

In a bid to improve herself educationally, Mrs Oluwatoyin proceeded to Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University) Ago Iwoye from where she graduated colourfully with a Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) followed immediately by a master’s Degree in Business Administration in 2019.

In recognition of her exceptional intellectual prowess and commitment, the Commonwealth University conferred on her the Doctor of Business Administration (Honoris Causa).

Her quest for intellectual development, capacity building and pacesetting, invigorated her into the greater search for knowledge. She realized right in time that she needed proper equipping for the duties and responsibilities that Providence had predestined her for, as such, she proceeded to the highly prestigious Walden University, Minnesota, USA in 2020 from where she bagged a Doctor of Philosophy (P.hD) in Management Finance.

An exquisite and highly determined personality, Dr Oluwatoyin Madien, in a career spanning more than 30 years before her ascendancy to the present position, had served meritoriously in various offices within the civil service.

Her entry point was as a middle-level officer at the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC).

She also was one of the pioneering staff of both the Family Economic Advancement Programme (FEAP) and the famous National Poverty Alleviation Programme (NAPEP).

Her distinguished career also took her to the Ministry of Police Affairs, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Ministry of Works and Housing and the Ministry of Youths and Sports Development all at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Notably, Chief Dr Mrs Oluwatoyin Madien’s achievements did not start with sudden flight, it was a result of deliberate, resilient and determined efforts.

This is so because before joining the federal civil service, Dr. Toyin served the Ogun State Property and Investment Corporation (OPIC), Abeokuta, as an Executive Officer. The period proved very rewarding as it gave her fresh insight and knowledge of the workings of the second and third tiers of government. An experience that was to later prove extremely rewarding and indisposable.

The highly skilled professional also bagged several eminent recognitions and memberships. For instance, Dr. Toyin is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered and Certified Accountants (ACCA), UK, a Member Association of National Accountants of Nigeria and a Member Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).

Upon assumption of office as the AGF, Chief Dr. Toyin realized that the demands of her new office were not going to be a tea party, as she was confronted with a higher call. While being in charge of the federal government’s accounting services may not look onerous, providing adequate accounting and control of all the Ministries, Extra-ministerial Departments and all arms of government proved challenging.

Her case was however a situation where preparation meets opportunity. She was not only prepared but given her stalling and distinguished intellectual and professional achievements, viewed her appointment as a task from God for humanity and country.

The fact that she is the first woman to attain such lofty office, motivated and made her determined to represent her constituency (the women folk) efficiently and effectively.

Her disposition was therefore that of demonstrated equanimity, compassion, resilience and empathy.

Within a short time, she began to prove her onions, as her devotion, commitment and determination to uphold fiscal transparency in government finance and accountability began to pay off.

In a well-thought-out plan of action, the ardent team player and resourceful advocate of fiscal transparency and responsibility conducted a forensic review of previous financial reforms embarked upon by her predecessors.

The insight gained thereafter enabled her to make hard decisions and also gave her the impetus to make resource-based fresh concepts and tactics for government financial operations and project sustainability as well as benefit delivery.

In a highly meticulous interface with IPPIS Server Providers, she was able to effectively put to rest the nagging challenges mitigating against the payment platform thereby enhancing remarkable improvement not witnessed previously.

Dr. Toyin’s deep insight, knowledge and experience in Fiscal responsibility enhanced the complete review of other financial management policies of government bringing about optimum, measurable and outstanding benefits and functionality.

It can be said that one of her greatest achievements is the demystification of the Federation Accounts and Allocation Committee (FAAC) specifics, especially as it has to do with revenue allocation to the various tiers of government.

While previous AGFs were confronted with subterfuge, Dr Toyin’s impeccable character and strong personality coupled with a firm knowledge of her profession were. Brought to bear on her schedule of duty as she consistently kept Nigerians properly informed about government revenue transactions, and performance relative to revenue inflows at all levels.

Her unwavering conviction that government can only thrive if the citizens are carried along in the management of public funds is not only a landmark, but has led to an enviable demonstration of accountability, transparency, and genuine commitment to serving the interest of not only Nigerians but foreigners, thereby making the populace aware of the inflows and expenditures of government.

This feat has led to immense confidence building and trust in government activities and enabled effective comparison of the revenue collected monthly, juxtaposed with developments on the ground thereby ascertaining compliance and strengthening the overall performance of the government.

Chief Dr. Mrs Oluwatoyin has in several practical ways proved her empathy, forthrightness and clear unambiguous understanding and knowledge of the nexus between government actions and the realities faced by the citizenry and those living in Nigeria.

Her prudent and faithful management of finances has over time proved not unique but innovative, creating synergy, balance and sustainable relationships with all tiers of government and even the international community.

It is necessary to note that this has also significantly reduced the incidences of conflicts and contradictions at FAAC meetings.

Dr. Toyin’s prioritization of prudence, transparency and accountability over even her professional reputation and the maintenance of her statutory obligations has led to the efficient delivery of national interest. It can be said that her major and overarching priority is the welfare of the people of Nigeria.

The detribalized trailblazer, the woman of substance, who has the empathy of a mother, understands the challenges faced by Nigerians as is consistently reflected in her daily activities.

With an efficient and collaborative approach to the fiscal decision-making process, Dr Toyin’s tenure can predictably be adjudged as not only the most distinguished, outstanding and beneficial to Nigerians but also pacesetting, and proactive with demonstrably keen observance of the feelings and interests of average Nigerians.

Her principle of cost-effective alternatives has drastically reduced Nigeria’s financial burden and generated revenue.

When all is said and done one practical area of her greatest achievements will be the stoppage of payments for projects yet to be awarded, this will save in no small measure, the country from huge embarrassment and prevent her from incurring unnecessary interest on funds that are yet to be deployed.

It can be said without contradiction that Chief Dr. Mrs Oluwatoyin Madien through her foresight, a combination of strict adherence To bureaucratic protocols and practices, and a thorough and painstaking assessment of each step taken, to mitigate waste combined with strict adherence to government policies has proved what responsible governance can achieve in a country when you have a round peg in a round hole.

CNS Ogalla and His Exploits on War Against Oil Theft By Toby Prince

CNS Ogalla and His Exploits on War Against Oil Theft

By Toby Prince

Nigeria’s vast maritime frontier stretches an impressive 84,000 nautical miles, rivalling a third of its landmass. With over 3,000 lakes and rivers, this complex terrain demands bold leadership.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recognised this challenge, appointing Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla as Chief of Naval Staff in June 2023. A seasoned navigator, Ogalla embodies the determination, discipline, and vision needed to harness Nigeria’s maritime potential.

Ogalla took over office on June 23, 2023, with a bold vision to transform Nigeria’s maritime security and blue economy. His comprehensive strategy, the Total Spectrum Maritime Strategy (TSMS), tackles maritime crimes and promotes economic growth.

With his vast knowledge of the maritime domain and tactical operations, Ogalla outlined a detailed agenda to combat maritime crimes and foster the growth and development of the blue economy. This agenda includes the designation of Special Courts for Maritime Crimes, Advocacy Campaigns to enlist community support, and Socioeconomic Crime Prevention Strategies.

The TSMS also focuses on enhancing naval capabilities through fleet renewal, operational readiness, and infrastructural development. Additionally, it prioritizes human capital development through personnel welfare and motivation, manpower training, and youth and sports development.

To ensure effective implementation, Ogalla’s strategy emphasizes maritime stakeholders’ engagement and interagency cooperation. By implementing these measures, the CNS aims to safeguard Nigeria’s maritime interests, promote economic growth, and enhance regional stability.

A strong believer in a highly motivated professional naval force which is capable of shaping the security outcomes within Nigeria’s maritime domain and the littorals, including land-based engagements in fulfilment of national interest, CNS Emmanuel Ogalla also, set in various measures and alternatives aimed at maintaining and equipping a professionally competent and ethical naval force, which will leverage on all the elements of national powers to effectively defend Nigeria’s maritime area against all forms of threat so as to deliver the imperatives of national security.

Consequently, to prove that all these are not about mere sloganeering and banters without effective actions, the CNS carried out various reforms and projects aimed at recapitalizing the Naval ship.

This led to the equipping of the Naval Shipyard Limited, saddled with the responsibility of constructing and fabricating small boats, big vessels and other facilities of the Navy.

This move has in no small measure reduced capital flight and enhanced, as well as encouraged the training and development of skilled manpower.

As part of his commitment and dedication to the welfare of his personnel, Vice Admiral Ogalla on several occasions personally undertook the inspection of his troops for an on-the-spot assessment of their operational readiness.

Those visits also served as a morale booster and helped to motivate the personnel.

His efficiency and effectiveness in the deployment and utilization of the Naval personnel, platforms, helicopters, and UAVs for surveillance and interdiction operations throughout the Niger Delta including the employment of both kinetics and non-kinetic measures have also led to massive and unprecedented breakthroughs and successes being recorded by the Nigeria Navy on the protection of the nation’s territorial waters, such that massive quantities of stolen products were recovered, with the dismantling of illegal refining sites, arrest of suspects, seizure of stolen products, and the disruption of oil thieves and vandals.

Consequently, with three months of intense operation of Operation DELTA SANITY; which is his brainchild, the Nigeria Navy recorded the seizure of 95 wooden boats, deactivated 119 storage tank refining ovens, and the deactivation of 447 dugout pits. The Navy also deactivated 120 illegal refining sites and sized 13 fibre boats.

Other achievements and successes recorded include the seizure of 9 vehicles and the arrest of 14 vessels and 74 criminal suspects.

Some of the arrested vessels include MT KALI, MT HABOUR SPIRIT, MT SAISNIL, MV TOKITO, MT VINILLARIS, and MT SWEET MIRI.

It is instrumental to note that, these operations have consequentially impacted climate change in the mitigation of hazardous air pollution and the curbing of sooth.

Through a policy of effective and deliberate human capacity development, as an ingredient for a highly professional and motivated workforce, he has entrenched a highly motivated professional and ethical naval force with a formidable capacity and the required competencies to defend the Country’s maritime space against threats of any kind.

A strong believer in collaboration as a key to success and sustainability, the CNS partners with agencies such as NIMASA, NPA, NDLEA, NOSDRA, and NEMA, as well as many foreign partners, including holding Bilateral meetings and talks with the American chief of Naval Service, Operation (CNO).

This extensive work has brought about trust, confidence building, synergy and operational successes. The Total Spectrum Strategy has led to the Zero Piracy Rating Status of Nigeria by the International Maritime Bureau.

Through his commitment to the ideals of the Tinubu Presidency, the Nigerian Navy has supported land operations in all the geopolitical zones of the country, winning the war against evil and ensuring a crime-free Nigeria.

The Nigeria Navy under his watch, through the strategy of Maritime Domain Awareness Capacity, not only ensured the compliance of its personnel to civility, and activated deterrent measures to curb negligence and unprofessional conduct of personnel but also provided all year-round situation awareness of Nigeria’s maritime domain extending to the limits of the Exclusive Economic Zone.

Through the use of its Maritime Domain Awareness Facilities, the Navy has enhanced early detection and swift response to incidences within the maritime environment.

With the capitalization of 2 XSeaward Defense Boats (SDB); constructed locally, the various Platforms, thereby ensuring and supporting its anti-piracy, anti-CoT, anti-IUU and anti-illegal drugs, combined with the acquisition of 2nd Offshore Survey Vessels, 2 by 32m FPBs and helicopters (NNS CHALAWA, P196-Seaward Defense Boat, NNS ZUR P195 – Seaward Defense Boat and NNS OCHUZOR Survey Vessels and the delivery of 2 by 76m OPVs from Turkey, the Nigeria Navy remains the most dominant in the Gulf of Guinea (GoG) and the 4th largest in Africa.

Presently, under Vice Admiral Ogalla, the Nigerian Navy has over 50 capital ships and several hundreds of boats to cover the maritime space and internal waters. While the capital ships are used to patrol the sea, the small vessels carry out routine patrols also.

His non-kinetic approach has brokered several peace initiatives amongst communities and deepened community-military harmony within Nigeria’s Oil/Gas littoral area.

Not leaving out the welfare of the personnel, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, has also demonstrated leadership and empathy by ensuring the construction of 50 units of 3 bedrooms, 128 units of 2 bedrooms and 120 units of 2 bedrooms apartments in Galadimawa, Asokoro Abuja, Lagos, Calabar and Port-Harcourt.

With an eye on sustainability, intellectual development and research, the Chief of Naval Staff on the 1st of June, 2024 launched the International Maritime Institute (IMION), an institution which will serve as a confluence for maritime discourse, the scintillation of ideas, and a vehicle for the articulation of maritime strategy on the African Continent.

With the launch of this crowning glory, the CNS intends to decimate, with a single shot, an institution which will also serve as a think-tank for maritime strategic thinkers, practitioners and allies with a far-reaching benefit of enhancing effective interaction, idea sharing and research into maritime strategic affairs affecting not only the Gulf of Guinea but the rest of the world, in such thematic areas as, maritime and ocean governance, maritime security, law enforcement, hydrography, blue economy, and climate change amongst others.

Under Ogalla’s visionary leadership, Nigeria’s war against oil theft has witnessed unprecedented success. His bold strategies, collaborative approach, and commitment to personnel welfare have transformed the Nigerian Navy into a formidable force. The Total Spectrum Maritime Strategy has yielded remarkable results, significantly boosting national security and contributing to global maritime stability. Ogalla’s efforts have solidified his legacy as a champion of maritime security and economic growth, earning the confidence of Nigerians and international partners alike.

GBAJABIAMILA AND HIS BRAND OF LOYALTY By Ibrahim Musa

GBAJABIAMILA AND HIS BRAND OF LOYALTY

By Ibrahim Musa

Rt. Hon. Olufemi Gbajabiamila’s loyalty finds its perfect echo in a timeless biblical truth: a man cannot serve two masters. This dedication, driven by principle rather than personal gain, stands as a testament to his strong character. Inspired by the unyielding devotion of biblical figures, Gbajabiamila’s commitment shines brightly. His steadfast resolve and faithfulness make him a pillar of reliability.

In a world where loyalty is often tested, Gbajabiamila’s exemplary service sets a shining standard. Guided by faith and conviction, his selfless dedication inspires hope. The real Rt. Hon. Gbaja, as he is fondly called by close associates, can hardly be divorced from his loyalty to President Asiwaju.

While there exist several writings about the quintessential Rt. Hon. GBAJABIAMILA, writing about his loyalty to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is particularly difficult and different, as it is not easy to attribute the brand of loyalty – short of senile attachment, not sycophancy, and not foolishness.

The difficulty in conjuring Rt. Hon. Femi’s loyalty to writing stems from the fact that it is very hard to find and convey its abstract aura experience to reality. It defies diction and description because it is deeper than words, yet it cannot be kept silent.

For over three decades, Gbajamialia’s love and unwavering loyalty existed in a rarefied set apart from such infractions as desperation, self-seeking, selfishness, self-glorification, self-preservation, and ego branding. Tradition and reverence have surrounded loyalty with an aura of ‘specialness.’ It has been given distinction, which is still continually encapsulated by specialists in the act of language and psychology.

Unfortunately, the kind of loyalty epitomized by Rt. Hon. Gbajabiamila defies all forms of specialist technical language, as it is inaccessible and off-putting, elitist and preserved. It is loyalty ingenue; Chief Femi perceives loyalty as an action from the heart. Although it may sound fey or simplistic, it represents the whole gamut of Gbajabiamil’s entire life, emotions, and experience; loyalty for him is an engagement.

Rt. Hon. Gbajabiamila Olufemi is loyal without excuses. He believes that to be successful in life, the most critical ingredient is loyalty. To the political juggernaut, loyalty keeps all relationships going and is exhibited from the beginning to the end. In life and more aptly, in the political world, there is a clarion call for loyalty, total loyalty, absolute and unequivocal. Trust in the ability of another to lead in the right direction brings about the fulfilment of life’s purpose.

Born on June 25, 1962, to the family of Chief Lateef Gbajabiamila in Lagos State, Olufemi Hakeem Gbajabiamila started his political life with his involvement in the election which saw Bill Campbell winning the Mayor of Atlanta. It can therefore be said that he started his political kindergarten from the founders and custodians of our democracy.

Upon Barrister Femi’s return to Nigeria in 2002, he joined the Alliance for Democracy (AD), to further ventilate his political aspirations. It was here that he met his protégé, mentor, and political associate, President Bola Ahmed Asiwaju Tinubu, GCFR, but then the Governor of Lagos State and leader of the Party. His dogged and unpretentious views and loyalty soon won the heart of Governor Bola Tinubu and also the minds and hearts of the people of Surulere 1, who pressured him into contesting for the post of House of Representatives representing Surulere 1 in 2003.

A philanthropist per excellent and defender of democracy, Chief Femi’s commitment to the electorates and loyalty to his Mentor saw his reelection thereafter for six consecutive terms without switching political parties. His firm stand and commitment to the Tinubu Political Ideology saw him and other lieutenants through the turbulent days of President Obasanjo’s Territorial acquisition for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

A vibrant, brilliant, and competent legislator, Chief Femi collaborated with others on President Tinubu’s team, consistently forming a formidable team. As core loyalists and ardent followers, wherever their masters went, they did. From Alliance for Democracy (AD) to Action Congress (AC), then All Progressives Congress, Rt. Hon. Gbajabiamila never shirked nor deterred, neither was his loyalty questionable.

A true manager of human and material resources, through an unequal act of selflessness and conscientiousness executive-legislative harmony, he was able to both win the .hearts and minds of his colleagues, maintain the independence of the Legislative Arm, and remain the eyes and ears of President Tinubu. Even as a Minority Leader and later Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Chief Gbajabiamila’s towering influence, growth, and political clout never diminished his loyalty, unflinching support, and dependence on his mentor but kept him on course, maintaining commitment to the political kingdom.

He strongly believes in the sacrifice Asiwaju has made for humanity and Nigeria and is therefore committed to following him through thick and thin. He cultivated Asiwaju’s friends and made his connections his pillar of strength and reliance, thereby remaining always an effective opposition, a chip off the old block, ideal characteristics of Bola Asiwaju Tinubu. He rejected honours and laurels that did not commit to the vision and ideals of Tinubu.

If Chief Gbajabiamila is a nationalist, it is because he learnt from Tinubu that it was the only way to Nigeria’s freedom. His passion for public service was inherited from his mentor. He drank and ate the Asiwaju’s spirit of nationalism and collective struggle. It is imbued, undisputable, irremovable, and unshaken, as his world revolves around it, undeterred and unmitigated. His unconditional loyalty and sacrifices are evident and unquestionably irrevocable.

Again, loyalty has paid. Surely loyalty has opened doors for him that arrogance will not have opened, bringing in love, reciprocal and mutual respect, progress, and the heart of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. On June 14, 2023, Rt. Hon. Olufemi Hakeem Gbajabiamila resumed duty as the Chief of Staff to the President.

A position of honour, trust, and reward of untiring and unequivocal thirty years of loyalty. Together, Rt. Hon. Gbajabiamila has built national bridges, defended the President, and ensured that humanity benefits from Asiwaju’s administration. Together, he asks questions, makes opinions known on issues of national development and social justice, and challenges authorities without a witch-hunt, all to improve the process of governance and ensure a better and more functional Nigeria.

Undoubtedly, Gbaja has proved unequivocally, in many deliberate, forthright, and demonstrated ways, that he loves Nigeria just like the President loves Nigeria, and that he is committed to building the nation and the President.
