Ekiti: Seven Governorship Aspirants Withdraw From APC Primary Election

Seven governorship aspirants under the All Progressives Congress have called on the party to cancel the primary election of the party scheduled for today in Ekiti State.
The aspirants, Kayode Mojo, Demola Popoola, Femi Bamisile, Bamidele Faparusi, Dayo Adeyeye, Opeyemi Bamidele and Afolabi Oluwasola on Thursday alleged that the primary election committee is made up of loyalists of the state Governor, Kayode Fayemi.

The Governorship aspirants of the ruling party claimed that Fayemi has plans to impose Biodun Oyebanji as the governorship candidate of the party in the forthcoming election.

The aspirants in a statement released on Thursday said there is no way the primary election will be fair with the calibre of people sitting on the primary election committees.

The statement reads, “The seven aspirants herein received with rude shock and dismay the purported list of the local government election committee and ward election committee made up solely by party members and political appointees that had before now openly endorsed the candidacy of Biodun Oyebanji the immediate past secretary to the state government.

“It is on record that the government of Governor Kayode Fayemi has given its unwavering support to the candidacy of Biodun Oyebanji, it is common knowledge that the Governor and most appointees of the governor are openly rooting for and supporting Biodun Oyebanji’s aspiration to become the flag bearer of our great party.

“What is more disturbing is the fact that a simple glance at the names of the persons appointed as members of both committees would reveal that it is made up of appointees of government who are all supporters of a candidate in the primary election they are appointed to superintend on.

“The seven candidates herein are loyal, faithful and committed party members who are sincerely concerned about the chances of the party in the forthcoming 2022 governorship election where imposition is allowed to override a Democratic primary election for determining its flag bearer.

“We request that both the local government election committee and ward election committee that was constituted on the list already in circulation be disbanded and replaced with names that would reinforce internal democracy and uphold the aims and objectives of the party.”

This is coming after the lawmaker representing Ekiti Central senatorial district, Opeyemi Bamidele, called on the APC to cancel the primary election of the party scheduled for today.

Bamidele in a statement released on Thursday alleged that the people on the primary election committee are aides of the state governor, Kayode Fayemi, who are working to ensure that Biodun Oyebanji, a governorship aspirant, gets the party’s ticket.

Ekiti APC Primary Election: Bamidele, Adeyeye, Others Battle To Suceed Fayemi

The battle to succeed Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State will take place today (Thursday) as the All Progressives Congress (APC) is set to conduct its governorship primary election in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.
Naija News reports that seven aspirants have declared their interest in contesting the gubernatorial ticket of the APC and retaining power for the ruling party in the state on June 18.

Some of the contenders include a serving Senator, a former Minister, a member of the House of Representatives, a former Commissioner and a former Chief of Staff to the state governor.

Below are the seven governorship hopefuls aspiring to take over from Fayemi after completing two terms in office.

Opeyemi Bamidele

Senator Opeyemi Bamidele is a lawyer and lawmaker representing Ekiti Central in the National Assembly. Bamidele was shot by hoodlums in Lagos two years ago during an event.

Bamidele was a former member of the House of Representatives and a top contender to succeed Governor Fayemi. He was the Director-General of the Fayemi Campaign Organisation in 2018.

The lawmaker served as an aide to the former Governor of Lagos State and the National Leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. He was also the former Commissioner of Information in Lagos.

Speaking at the APC headquarters in Abuja in December, Bamidele said he has what it takes to lead the state to the next level and he is the most competent, experienced and qualified to succeed Fayemi.

Dayo Adeyeye

Senator Dayo Adeyeye is former Minister of State for Works under the Goodluck Jonathan administration and ex-Senator representing Ekiti South Senatorial District in the National Assembly.

The member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was sacked by the court and replaced with Senator Biodun Olujimi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Adeyeye was the former spokesman of the PDP and the Nigerian Senate. He was also the National Publicity Secretary of the Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere.

The former senator is the National Chairman, Southwest Agenda for Tinubu 2023 presidential ambition (SWAGA) and a former member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).

Biodun Oyebanji

Biodun Oyebanji is a former Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and former Chief of Staff to Governor Fayemi in his first term.

He served as the Special Adviser on Parliamentary Affairs in the Niyi Adebayo administration. The former SSG has worked as a university lecturer and a banker.

Oyebanji is a seasoned administrator who has served in at least three governments since Ekiti was created in 1996 by the late Sani Abacha.

The politician worked as liaison officer between Ekiti state and the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission. Oyebanji is rumoured to have the backing of Fayemi for the ticket.

Bamidele Faparusi

Hon. Bamidele Faparusi is the immediate past Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utilities in the state. He is a top contender for the APC ticket.

Faparusi was a member of the House of Representatives between 2011 and 2015.

Under his stewardship as commissioner for public utilities, the state is said to have recorded a good water supply across the councils.

While the former commissioner may not have the popularity of the other contenders at the national level, he is known to be a grassroots politician.

Faparusi is said to understand the workings of the state, and if he eventually becomes governor, the knowledge will prove useful in meeting the aspirations of the people.

Kayode Ojo

Kayode Ojo is an engineer who is well known in the Ekiti political scene. He aspired to be governor in 2018 but came third in the APC primary poll.

Aside from politics, Ojo is a successful businessman who is active in the oil and gas industry. Ojo is from Ekiti Central Senatorial District.

The aspirant had recently said if elected governor, he will work towards increasing the revenue of the state without burdening the people.

His entrepreneurial skill is believed to give him an edge over other aspirants.

Femi Bamisile

Femi Bamisile is a current member of the house of representatives and a grassroots politician.

The aspirant was first elected into the Ekiti house of assembly on the platform of the PDP in 2007 and later became the speaker.

His tenure was short-lived after falling out with some members of the assembly. He later stepped down from the speakership position.

Bamisile also served as PDP deputy chairman in the state but he defected to the APC after a row with Ayo Fayose, a former governor of the state.

The aspirant is from Kota in Ekiti south senatorial district.

Ademola Popoola

Ademola Popoola is a chieftain of the ruling party and relatively new to Ekiti politics. He is from Ekiti North Senatorial District.

The APC member is largely known for a football tournament he sponsors in the state.

Popoola believes that football could be an avenue talented youths in the state could make a livelihood from, hence the tournaments he organises.

The aspirant is gunning to make Ekiti an “industrial state” and he has boasted of having “international connections”.

Infidelity: Gospel singer Sammie Okposo tenders public apology, suspends self from ministry

Popular gospel artiste, Sammie Okposo, on Tuesday tendered a public apology to his wife, Ozioma, and his fans after he confessed to cheating on his wife.

The Wellu Wellu master, as he is fondly called, took to his Instagram account to reveal that when he travelled to the United States, he was involved in an intimate relationship with another woman.

He wrote, “Dear Friends, I need to bring a very unfortunate incident to your attention as I am not proud of it but know that this is the right thing to do.

“On my recent trip to the USA (Late 2021), I got intimately involved with a lady, knowing that this was not appropriate as a married man and a minister of the gospel. I am ashamed and regret my actions as it has caused a lot of pain to my dear wife, Ozioma, my family and I.

“As I work in making peace with God, repenting and asking His forgiveness, I am suspending myself from all ministry work until full restoration as this is what is proper and what I know I owe God and His people.

“To my wife, Ozioma, I am sincerely sorry I put you through this shameful and embarrassing situation. I broke your trust and disappointed you.

“Your forgiveness of my moral failure and poor judgement is important to me. I pray I will eventually be able to build back the trust and confidence every single day forth.

“I want to take this moment and apologise to all fathers and mothers of the Faith and ministers of the Gospel for my behavior and moral failure.

“I won’t be here if not for your investment and belief in what God has called me to do. I sincerely apologize for this embarrassing situation.

“To all that have been a part of my ministry, followed my ministry or know me personally, I am truly sorry for disappointing you.

“I regret any pain or disappointment that this news of my moral failure and poor judgement may cause you and I am truly sorry for disappointing you.

“I humbly ask that you continue to pray for me.”

This comes barely 24 hours after an American-based woman, identified as African Doll, accused the singer of impregnating her.

The woman revealed this on Monday while talking to a YouTuber on Obodo Oyibo TV, stating that Okposo abandoned her after she told him about the pregnancy.

Sevilla reach agreement to sign Martial from Man United

Sevilla have reached an agreement to sign Anthony Martial on loan from Manchester United.

The 26-year-old will join the La Liga side – who will pay his wages in full – until the end of the season.

Martial will fly from Paris, where he is currently located, to Seville on Tuesday to undergo a medical.

The forward always wanted to join Sevilla this month, despite interest from Juventus and Barcelona, because he believes that is where he will play the most.

There had been reports in December that Martial wanted to leave United in search of more game time.

Martial became the world’s most expensive teenager when he joined United from Monaco in 2015 and went on to score 79 times in 269 appearances for the club.

But he fell out of favour in the forward positions following the signings of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho in the summer, as well as the emergence of Mason Greenwood.

Martial has started just four games for United this season, and was accused by Ralf Rangnick, the club’s interim manager, of asking not to play in the 2-2 draw at Aston Villa on January 15.

The France international refuted his manager’s claim, and Rangnick later insisted the situation was “resolved”.

Following Saturday’s 2-2 draw at home to Celta Vigo, Sevilla are currently second in La Liga and just four points behind Real Madrid as they search for their first title since 1946.

FAAN Condemns Customs Comptroller For Breaching Airport Security

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has condemned officers of the Nigeria Customs Service for breaching the security system at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

The authority made this known in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Henrietta Yakubu, adding that such security breaches were becoming recurrent and must cease.

FAAN also alleged that the Customs Area Comptroller for Hajj and Cargo Terminal and his officers assaulted Aviation Security officers on duty and forcefully took over Gate 3 of the airport.

The statement read in part, “At about 17.45hrs on Thursday, January 20, 2022, while the AVSEC officers on day duty at Gate 3 were profiling a NAHCO vehicle that wanted to access the Security Restricted Area via Gate 3, the Customs Area Comptroller for Hajj and Cargo Terminal suddenly emerged and pulled off behind the NAHCO vehicle that was being attended to.

“And CSC Agunbiade, a Customs officer on the area comptroller’s entourage later shoved aside the AVSEC officer at the gate, forcefully took over the gate and opened the gate for the comptroller and his escorts to forcefully access the Security Restricted Area via the gate.”

It added, “While accessing the gate, the armed escorts to the comptroller threatened to beat up the AVSEC officers at the gate if they dare resist their assault and breach of security.

“This blatant abuse of the privilege of bearing firearms by the NCS has become a recurrent threat to the safety and security of our staff and our operations.”

Reacting to the development, the NCS through its spokesperson, Joseph Attah, queried FAAN’s right in declaring a gate restricted from Custom personnel in a cargo airport.

He said, “I have read the statement and it clearly shows that the officials are ignorant of the rules. You can’t restrict a gate to Customs in a cargo airport. What is your intention for doing that, that intention is suspicious?

“Are you creating a route for those who want to smuggle cargo out of the country? And will you also do the job of Customs at that gate?

“And instead of engaging each other to understand each other’s role, you are issuing a statement and making it public and saying we should respect your mandate.

“So I think the best thing is for the senior officials to engage each other and understand their roles instead of demonstrating this false sense of superiority.”

BUA Chairman, Abdul Samad Rabiu Now Africa’s Fifth Richest Man, Second In Nigeria With Latest Forbes Report

The ripples effect of the recent listing of BUA Foods PLC on the Nigerian exchange has continued to be felt internationally as it has reflected in Forbes placement of Nigerian billionaires in its Aftican listing.

Generally, Africa’s billionaires are richer than they have been in years, despite the global pandemic. As a group, the continent’s 18 billionaires are worth an estimated $84.9 billion – a 15% increase from twelve months ago and the most since 2014, when a larger number of billionaires–28–were worth a combined $96.5 billion. On average, the continent’s billionaires are worth $4.7 billion now vs. $3.4 billion in 2014. Soaring stock prices from Nigeria to Zimbabwe lifted the fortunes of these tycoons, as demand for products from cement to luxury goods ticked up.

For the 11th year in a row, Alike Dangote of Nigeria is the continent’s richest person, worth an estimated $13.9 billion, up from $12.1 billion last year following a 30% increase in the stock price of Dangote Cement, his most valuable asset. A surge in housing developments in Nigeria and growth in government infrastructure spending drove higher demand in the first nine months of 2021, analysts found. Jumping into the No. 2 spot–up from No. 4 last year–is luxury goods magnate Johann Rupert of South Africa. A more than 60% surge in the share price of his Compagnie Financiere Richemont–maker of Cartier watches and Montblanc pens–pushed his fortune to $11 billion, up from $7.2 billion a year ago, making him the biggest dollar gainer on the list. South African Nicky Oppenheimer, who formerly ran diamond mining firm DeBeers before selling it to mining firm Anglo American a decade ago, ranks No. 3, worth an estimated $8.7 billion.

The biggest gainer in percentage terms–up 125%—is Strive Masiyiwa of Zimbabwe, worth $2.7 billion, up from $1.2 billion last year. Shares of Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, which he founded, rose more than 750% in the past year, helping to drive up the size of his fortune.

Another gainer: Nigerian cement tycoon Abdulsamad Rabiu, who is $1.5 billion richer after taking yet another of his companies public. In early January 2022, Rabiu listed his sugar and food firm BUA Foods on the Nigerian stock exchange. He and his son retained a 96% stake in the company, which recently had a market capitalization of nearly $2.8 billion. (Forbes discounts the values of stakes when the public float is less than 5%.) BUA Cement, in which he and his son have a 96% stake, listed in January 2020. He is now listed as the fifth in the continent as well as the second in Nigeria.

Africa’s Billionaires: Collective Net Worth Over A Dozen Years

Only two of the 18 billionaires are worth less than last year: Koos Bekker of South Africa, who dropped to $2.7 billion from $2.8 billion as the share prices of consumer Internet firms Naspers and Prosus fell more than 20% each, and Mohammed Dewji of Tanzania, whose fortune declined to an estimated $1.5 billion from $1.6 billion a year ago due to lower multiples for publicly traded competitors.

The 18 billionaires from Africa, none of whom are new to the ranks, hail from seven different countries. South Africa and Egypt each have five billionaires, followed by Nigeria with three and Morocco with two. All of the continent’s billionaires are men; the last woman to appear in the ranks, Isabel dos Santos of Angola, fell off the Forbes list in January 2021.

METHODOLOGY

Our list tracks the wealth of African billionaires who reside in Africa or have their primary business there, thus excluding Sudanese-born billionaire Mo Ibrahim, who is a U.K. citizen, and billionaire London resident Mohamed Al-Fayed, an Egyptian citizen. Strive Masiyiwa, a citizen of Zimbabwe and a London resident, appears on the list due to his telecom holdings in Africa.

Net worths were calculated using stock prices and currency exchange rates from the close of business on Wednesday, January 19, 2022. To value privately held businesses, we start with estimates of revenues or profits and apply prevailing price-to-sale or price-to-earnings ratios for similar public companies. Some list members grow richer or poorer within weeks-or days-of our measurement date.

BREAKING: Hanifa’s Killer Arraigned In Court [PHOTO]

Abdulmalik Tanko, Proprietor of Noble Kids School in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano, has been arraigned before a magistrate Court in the state.

Tanko was arraigned before Senior magistrate, Muhammad Jibril, over the murder of Hanifa Abubakar, a five-year-old pupil.

Tanko had confessed killing Hanifa with rat poison after abducting her last December.

Earlier, angry youths stormed the school premises very early on Monday morning and set it ablaze, purportedly in protest against the killing of the five-year-old.

Hanifa was abducted by Tanko who demanded ransom from her parents and later killed her in December last year.

The disturbing news of her death became a major discourse after the Police Public Relations Officer in Kano, Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed to reporters last Friday that Hanifa’s teacher, one Abdulmalik Tanko, was indicted in the murder.

He revealed that Abdulmalik confessed that he kidnapped the girl and took her to his house where he contacted her relatives and demanded a ransom of N6 million.

The said teacher later conspired with one Hashim Isyaku to kill the girl on December 18, 2021, having realised that the victim had recognised him.

They buried Hanifa in a shallow grave within the school premises located at Kwanar ‘Yan Gana in Tudun Murtala Quarters.
