Audit: Reps Panel Summons Fashola, Aregbesola, Others

Four ministers, their permanent secretaries and their heads of finance and procurement departments have been given a seven-day ultimatum by the public accounts committee of the House of Representatives to appear before it.
The committee threatened that failure to appear before it within the given time will see relevant laws invoked against them.

The affected ministers are Rauf Aregbesola (Interior), Ali Pantami (Communications and Digital Economy), Prof Osagie Ehanire (Health), Sharon Ikeazor (Environment), Babatunde Fashola (Works and Housing).

The Chairman of the committee, Oluwole Oke summoned the ministers during an investigative hearing held on Tuesday over the alleged refusal by the ministers and officials of their ministries to respond to audit queries issued by the Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation over the years.

Oke while addressing the former Governor of Osun State, charged him to appear before it with the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the head of the Federal Fire Service.

He directed the clerk of the committee to dispatch the notice to the affected ministries and a copy to be sent to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha; Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN); and the Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Gambari, respectively.

Oke said, “Today makes it the fifth time the Ministry of Works and Housing will be asking for another extension of time on the audit queries raised against it over the years. For how long shall we continue like this? Mr President honoured some people with public appointments but to pay him back, they will not be alive to their responsibilities. This is very unfortunate.

“We are only asking them to make appearances before the committee to clarify issues on financial infractions raised by the Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation, nothing more!”

BREAKING! Residents uncover human Parts Inside Uncompleted Building In Oyo

Residents in a community in Oyo town have uncovered activities of suspected ritualists in an uncompleted building in the area.

Our correspondent gathered that those living close to the building, which is along the Oyo-Ilora Road, in the Oyo West Local Government Area, Oyo State, started combing the bushes after perceiving a foul odour.

They were said to have stumbled on decomposing human parts in the uncompleted building.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the discovery was reported at the Oyo West Police Station.

A resident, who identified himself simply as Lanre, told our correspondent on the telephone on Tuesday that he was there when a police team visited the building, adding that some suspects had been arrested.

He said, “Three days ago, there was a stench from an uncompleted building and residents thought some persons were defecating in the place. But when they searched the area, a complete human arm was found and some other items that suggested that some persons had probably been killed there.

“The case was reported to the police in Oyo and they came and arrested some suspects. We were disturbed because the policemen that came did not allow us to take pictures of the human parts discovered there.

“We don’t want the case to be covered up. Many things are happening now. Human beings are daily being killed for rituals and if such a thing is discovered, I believe the police should do everything possible to expose those behind it.”

Another resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told our correspondent that human bones and the school uniform of a child were found at the site, adding that the discoveries raised suspicions that the act might have been going on for a while.

He said, “Those living close to the site said they used to see a man riding a motorcycle to the place. They said the man used to work with a shovel in the building; they thought he was clearing debris, but did not know he was carrying out criminal activities there. Somebody later said that he knew the father of the motorcycle rider. The police came, saw those things and took them away. They also arrested some suspects.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, did not take his calls which rang out.

He had also yet to reply to a text message and chats sent to his telephone line on the matter as of the time of filing this report.

However, the Commandant of the Amotekun Corps in Oyo State, Col. Olayinka Olayanju (retd.), confirmed the incident to our correspondent in Ibadan, the state capital.

He said, “The information is true. I was told by my people that it was a decomposing body that was found there. The corpse was dismembered and the police arrested some suspects. I was not told that a school uniform was found there. The dismembered body was not fresh.

“Our men went there, but the suspects were arrested by the police; they are not with us. Since the body was dismembered, it suggests a ritual killing.”

Mummy GO sends Warning to youths ahead of valentine’s day celebration

The founder of Rapture Proclaimer Evangelical Church of God, Funmilayo Adebayo, popularly known as Mummy GO, has described the celebration of Valentine’s Day as satanic.
According to the controversial cleric, the day where people express love through gifts and other means is not worth celebrating.

She further stated that Valentine’s Day was initiated by the kingdom of darkness to destroy people.

Mummy GO said, “The story that happened that they said they are celebrating as Valentine does not deserve celebration. The story has nothing to celebrate, but the enemy just chose it because that man — Valentino or what did they call him, they knew everybody loves him because he is a good person, who helped people and showed love to everyone.

“Yet, how did he die? He died a useless, terrible death. He died of dejection if you know the story very well. Is that something that needs to be celebrated? No.

“But they purposively chose it because the kingdom of darkness needs a day dedicated for falling, destruction and how do you convince people to celebrate immorality: they use popular figures loved by others.”

Kanye West deletes Kim Kardashian, kids photos amid divorce drama

American rapper Kanye West has deleted all the posts about his estranged wife and their four children on his Instagram account.

This is coming days after he shared a series of posts on the social media app calling out Kim’s style of parenting.

The billionaire rapper’s decision to delete the posts may be connected to a video that has now gone viral on social media where he was seen spending time with three of his four kids without any sort of chaperone.

Kanye had called out Kim for kidnapping their daughter, Chicago a few days ago.

“What do you mean by main provider? He also lashed at the mother of his four children for giving their first daughter, North, access to the popular social media app, Tiktok.

A claim Kim later refuted.

PDP Picks Taraba Senator As Bwacha’s Replacement

Senator Shuaibu Lau, representing Taraba North-East senatorial district, has been named as the new deputy minority leader of the Senate following Senator Emmanuel Bwacha’s exit from the party.

The Senate PDP caucus communicated this decision in a letter addressed to the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, by the party’s national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, on Tuesday.

Bwacha had dumped the party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday.

“The PDP Senate caucus has duly informed the National Headquarters of the party, in view of which we so communicate to you. We believe that Lau will be an asset to the leadership of the Senate. Thank you and accept the assurances of our highest regards,” read part of Ayu’s letter.

Bwacha had hinged his defection from the PDP on the “huge division and factionalisation” of the opposition party in his state.

“I had to leave because I seek to breathe better. This day, I announce henceforth my exit from the PDP, and to join the governing party because of the visible presence of the party in my Senatorial District,” the senator had told President Muhammadu Buhari when he visited the State House to formally inform him of his defection.

Bwacha’s defection had brought the number of APC Senators to 70, while the PDP has 38 and the Young Progressives Party (YPP) has only one.

Increase VAT Rate To Address Revenue Underperformance, IMF Tells FG

The International Monetary Fund has called on the Federal Government to further increase the Value Added Tax rate to tackle the current revenue challenges being faced by the country.

The Federal Government had in 2020 raised the rate of Value Added Tax from five per cent to 7.5 per cent to raise revenue.

Nigeria currently has one of the lowest VAT rate in Sub Saharan Africa.

The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is currently battling revenue underperformance and had resulted to borrowing to finance the annual Federal Government budget.

The Federal Government is to spend N3.61trn servicing Nigeria’s debt burden in the 2022 fiscal period.

The N3.61trn to be used to service the nation’s debt represents about 34 per cent of the 2022 projected revenue of the Federal Government.

Nigeria is experiencing a worsening debt level as the country’s indebtedness rose by N2.5trn between July to September last year.

The country’s debt burden as revealed by the Debt Management Office hit a record N38trn or $92.626bn as of the end of September 30, 2021.

In the second quarter of 2020, Nigeria’s debt was N35.4trn.

The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari was recently under attack on the country’s rising debt levels

Nigeria’s debt service to Gross Domestic Product ratio had hit 73 per cent based on figures released by the Finance Minister, Mrs Zainab Ahmed.

But the IMF, in a statement at the end of its Article IV consultation with Nigeria, said despite the recovery in oil prices, the general government fiscal deficit was projected to widen in 2021 to 5.9 per cent of GDP, reflecting implicit fuel subsidies and higher security spending.

It also called for urgent fiscal reforms to stop fuel subsidy and tackle the vulnerabilities of the exchange rate market.

The Federal Government had on January 24 suspended its plan to remove fuel subsidy this year. It also proposed to extend the subsidy removal implementation period by 18 months, saying it would engage the legislature for the amendment of the Petroleum Industry Act.

The IMF Executive Directors said in the statement that the country’s outlook remained subject to significant risks, including from the pandemic trajectory, oil price uncertainty, and security challenges.

The statement said, “Directors highlighted the urgency of fiscal consolidation to create policy space and reduce debt sustainability risks.

“In this regard, they called for significant domestic revenue mobilisation, including by further increasing the value-added tax rate, improving tax compliance, and rationalizing tax incentives.

“Directors also urged the removal of untargeted fuel subsidies, with compensatory measures for the poor and transparent use of saved resources. They stressed the importance of further strengthening social safety nets.

The IMF Directors said it considered it appropriate to maintain a supportive monetary policy in the near term, with continued vigilance against inflation and balance of payments risks.

They encouraged the authorities to stand ready to adjust the monetary stance if inflationary pressures increase.
