FBI Arrest Another Nigerian in U.S. for stealing $800,000 in payroll hacking

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrested a Nigerian, Charles Onus, for his alleged involvement in diverting $800,000 into prepaid debit cards.

The amount translates to about N320 million at the current official rate of N410 per dollar.

This comes less than a month after Abidemi Rufai, an aide to Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, was arrested for fraud in the United States.

According to a statement on the United State Department of Justice website, Mr Onus was arrested and detained on April 14, in San Francisco.

He was presented before the Manhattan federal court on Wednesday.

The prosecution accused him of hacking over 5,500 company user accounts.

He allegedly participated in a scheme that stole nearly $1 million by hacking into a payroll processing company’s system to access user accounts and divert payroll to prepaid debit cards he controlled.

“As alleged, Onus did this as effectively as someone who commits bank burglary, but with no need for a blowtorch or bolt-cutters. Thanks to the FBI and IRS-CI, Onus is in custody and facing serious federal charges,” the statement read in part.

In the indictments filed against him in court, Mr Onus allegedly participated in the scheme between July 2017 through about 2018, obtaining over 5,500 company user accounts through a cyber-intrusion technique referred to as “credential stuffing.”

“After Onus successfully gained unauthorised access to a company user account, he changed the bank account information designated by the user of the account so that Onus would receive the user’s payroll to a prepaid debit card that was under Onus’ control.

“From at least in or about July 2017 through at least in or about 2018, at least approximately 5,500 company user accounts were compromised and more than approximately $800,000 in payroll funds were fraudulently diverted to prepaid debit cards, including those under the control of Onus,” the statement partly read.

Charges
He was charged with “one count of computer fraud for causing damage to a protected computer, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

“One count of computer fraud for unauthorised access to a protected computer to further intended fraud, and one count of receipt of stolen money, each of which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison; one count of wire fraud, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison; and one count of aggravated identity theft, which carries a mandatory sentence of two years in prison to be served consecutively to any other sentence imposed,” the statement further read.

PREMIUM TIMES had earlier reported how Mr Rufai, an aide to Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun was arrested for $350,000 fraud in the U.S. last month.

He was arrested while trying to board Royal Dutch Airlines flight KL644 at John F. Kennedy International Airport (“JFK Airport”) in Queens, New York, to Amsterdam, with a final destination of Lagos, Nigeria.

He is to be arraigned on fraud charges before a United States Courthouse, in Tacoma, Washington, on June 8, 2021.

Mr Onus’ arrest adds to the growing list of Nigerians arrested for cybercrimes abroad. Some of the common allegations many some of the Nigerian suspects have been accused of include bank verification number scams, fraudulent emails, hacking, cyber harassment, spamming, ATM spoofing, social media hi-jacking etcetera), and exploits vulnerabilities of both electronic devices and their users.

This act destroys the reputation of a country, making the business environment difficult for start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises, while discouraging investment in the economy by foreign companies.

“I didn’t marry him for his look”- Mide Martins says as she reveals real reason for marrying Afeez Owo

Really, no woman loves poverty. Every spinster wants a charming prince with wads of naira bills. Truth be told, a large percentage of single ladies would hardly go for a man who earns N50,000 monthly and he’s without a car!

But hundreds would do anything to get a rich bachelor with a fantastic pay or a booming business who can foot the bill of a grand wedding that is Instagram-worthy.

You can count the number of ladies who ‘build the future’ with an ‘upcoming’ guy.

Build a future? Yes, the way Mide Funmi Martins did with her husband Afeez Abiodun aka Afeez Owo.

Mide, who is the daughter of late actress, Funmi Martins grabbed what life thrust at her when she lost her beautiful mother.

Afeez Owo was her late mother’s manager who helped her with all the works the deceased could not complete before her death.

You would agree that Afeez is not a ‘Prince Charming’, unlike his beautiful wife. Well, Mide gave a reason why she agreed to date him 20 years ago.

She confessed that she rejected him when he initially asked her out.

“Of course, it sounded strange when he initially came up with that idea, I asked him if he was okay. I did not even think it would be possible because I saw him like my brother and we were very close. Initially, I told him it was not possible for us to become lovers but with time, I saw some qualities in him which I admired.”

The qualities the beautiful actress and now mother of two saw was not money because Afeez wasn’t rich or good-looking then.

Maybe she can explain in her own words, “He proved to be a reliable person. He is faithful, caring and has a good heart plus the fact that he is very easy-going. All of these appealed to me and I reasoned that I should give him a chance in my life.”

Still staying happily married 19 years after, Mide would advise any lady seeking a man to marry to adhere to this advice:

First, she proffered patience.

“It is good to be patient because not all that glitters is gold. My marriage has been a success because I practiced patience. When we started, things were not as smooth as I wanted it to be but I was patient with him. We had our good and bad times but it’s necessary that you remain calm during the bad times.”

This is her number two advice—shun money.

She advised in an interview with PUNCH:

“Remember that money does not guarantee happiness. Bachelors and spinsters should marry someone that is reliable and makes them happy.”

The third tip on how to get a good husband is from Afeez. A actor/producer/director, he should be able to know who the ‘good girls’ are.

Advising women, Afeez said he married not only a beautiful woman but one who has motherly traits.

He said, “My wife is beautiful and I realized that she is a simple person who has got a good head on her shoulders. When my ex-girlfriend cheated on me then, she was one of the people who begged on her behalf but I had already made up my mind. It was after a while I started dating Mide. We have been married for almost 19 years now and she is like my mother and I love her so much.”

Ladies, ready to embrace these characteristics as you search for Mr. Right? Please do.

The couple is blessed with two children.

BREAKING: Malami denies Memo Seeking Suspension Of Constitution, Says it is fabricated

The Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami has reacted to a report that he wrote a memo to the President, Muhammadu Buhari, seeking the suspension of Nigeria’s constitution and a declaration of Martial law over rising Insecurity in the country.

AGF Malami described the report as ‘false’ and ‘fabricated’. This was conveyed in a statement made available to POLITICS NIGERIA, signed by his media aide, Umar Jibril Gwandu. The AGF maintained that he is pro-constitutional democracy. The statement read;

“The attention of the Office of the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN has been drawn to a false and fictitious report alleging that there was a secret memo emanating from the Office to the Presidency.”

“The Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Malami, is a constitutionally recognised one with its role and responsibilities embedded in the constitution.”

“It is antithetical to common sense to think that the holder of such coveted Office as the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice will stoop to what was printed by the media. Kukah Quipped: We Knows Bandits and Killers But Can’t Call Them Terrorists

The Catholic Bishop of the Sokoto diocese, Matthew Kukah, has faulted the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for its refusal to declare bandits as a terrorist group.

Kukah, in his homily at the burial of Rev. Fr. Alphonsus Bello, which held at Our Lady of Apostle Catholic Church Independence Way, Kaduna, on Wednesday, also said Nigerian leaders had no blood in their hearts.

“Those who govern us are allowing this killing of citizens in their innocency because they have no blood in their hearts,” Kukah said.

The late Bello was kidnapped alongside Rev. Fr. Joseph Keke and murdered by bandits on May 21, 2021, in Katsina.

The cleric noted that there was nowhere in the world where killings of human beings were so manifested as it was in Nigeria.

Kukah said, “There is nowhere citizens can be slaughtered in the whole world without the government showing empathy and concern.

“The continuous barbaric slaughter and murder of our people in their innocency suggests that our beautiful Presidential Villa, National Assembly, government houses, are not evidence of civilization.

“How did Nigeria come to this tragic situation? We know who they are, who they believe in and where their inspiration comes from. The government has never declared the kidnappers to be a terrorist group.

“There is no ambiguity about those who are killing our people and why they are doing so and where their inspiration comes from. We hear and live with stories of complicity at the highest level. We as Christians can only rely on the faithful Word of God.

“Is it possible that you have a country where people have sworn with Qur’an and Bible to uphold the principles of governance that they will do everything within their power to protect and defend the integrity of Nigerians and suddenly we are where we are today?”

Kukah added, “I think the President and governors of Nigeria should address Nigerians and say, fellow Nigerians I have sworn that I will not protect you from foreign invaders, kidnappers and being killed.

“You are on your own. Your security is in your own hands. Keeping you safe is not our immediate priority. Foreign bandits or anyone can come at will kill, loot, rape, kidnap and murder you. They can wipe out your communities, destroy your homes, your farmlands, property.

“They can kidnap or murder your children at will. They can rustle your cattle. If they kidnap your children, wives or husbands, we will consider you criminals for negotiating for their release. We are preparing a law that could see you go to jail for 15 years for this heinous crime against your fatherland.”

Amotekun Warned: Foreign Herdsmen Are In Our Forests

The Chairman of the Oyo State of South-West Security Network, aka Amotekun, Gen. Kunle Togun (retd), on Wednesday advised residents of South-West states to be vigilant because of the presence of foreign Fulani herdsmen in forests in the region.

“But these ones causing problems are non-Nigerians. They are from Futa Jallon, Mali, Bourkina Faso, Chad, Niger Republic. Some of these people were Tuaregs, who used to ambush traders in the olden days and robbed them of their money and property.

“These foreign Fulani, somebody has told them that Allah has given Nigeria to them as their heritage and they are coming here to come and take what Allah has given them.”

The Amotekun boss advised people in the six states of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti and Ondo States to be security conscious.

Toogun said the commercial motorcyclists, who had infiltrated the region, were foot soldiers sent to study the topography of the region.
