Gaddafi’s son released by Libyan govt after seven years in prison

Saadi Gaddafi, son of Muammar Gaddafi, sits behind bars during a hearing at a courtroom in Tripoli, Libya
Saadi Gaddafi, son of the former leader Muammar Gaddafi, has been released after seven years in prison.

The latest development was confirmed by a Libyan official source and a unity government source on Sunday.

Muammar Gaddafi was outsted and killed during the 2011 NATO-backed uprising. During the fallout of uprsing, Saadi Gaddafi fled for Niger but was extradited to Libya in 2014 and has been imprisoned since then in Tripoli.

Reports say that he immediately departed on a plane to Istanbul after his release.

Deal of the day
Saadi, now 47, was known for his extravagant lifestyle during his father’s dictatorship.

The former professional footballer had been held in a Tripoli prison, accused of crimes committed against protesters in 2011 and of the 2005 killing of Libyan football coach Bashir al-Rayani.

Mike Pence’s Gaddafi comments ‘stupid’, says North Korea
In April 2018, the court of appeal acquitted him of Rayani’s murder.

During the uprising, three of the dictator’s seven sons were killed, and the country has since sunk into chaos, with rival factions vying for power.

A 2020 ceasefire ended the factional fighting and paved the way for peace talks and the formation of a transitional government this March, ahead of elections set for December.

But preparations are marred by disputes between key stakeholders over when to hold elections, what elections to hold, and on what constitutional grounds.

Libya has suffered chaos, division and violence in the decade since the uprising. The Government of National Unity was installed in March as part of a peace push that was also meant to include elections planned for December.

Saadi Gaddafi’s release resulted from negotiations that included senior tribal figures and Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibeh, the official source said. Another source said the negotiations also involved former interior minister Fathi Bashagha.

In 2018 the Justice Ministry said Saadi Gaddafi had been found not guilty of “murder, deception, threats, enslavement and defamation of the former player Bashir Rayani”.

In July the New York Times said it had interviewed Saadi’s brother, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, who was held for years in the town of Zintan, as his supporters indicate he will run in the presidential elections planned for December.

I Paid Beninese lawyers millions but They Failed To save me from prison – Sunday Igboho

I Paid Beninese lawyers millions but They Failed To save me from prison – Sunday Igboho

Popular Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo (aka Sunday Igboho), has lambasted his Beninese lawyers for failing to stop his detention at a prison in Benin Republic.

Sunday Igboho revealed that some of the lawyers were paid up to five million million (Naira), expressing disappointment that none of them could stop the judge from detaining him despite their large number in court.

This revelation came out after an altercation between the activist and one of his lawyers, Ibrahim David Salami.

Recounting the issue between him and Salami to one of his supporters on phone, Adeyemo explained how he walked out on Salami when he came to see him inside the Benin Republic prison.

According to an audio of the phone conversation between him (Igboho) and the caller, the activist narrated that Lawyer Salami had kept him waiting and he eventually walked out on him.

“Lawyer Salami came to prison to see me, but he kept me waiting, attending to some other people for more than 15 minutes. I called on him, ‘Lawyer, I’m waiting, I’m hungry. I want to go and eat.’

“But he replied me saying, ‘will you be going then’ and and I walked away’. I don’t lie. He was here to see me, not someone else. He should have told those ones that he wanted to see his client. I am not a kid. I will be 50 in October,” Sunday Igboho said angrily.

While the caller tried to persuade Sunday Igboho to make peace with his lawyers because freedom is better than being in captivity, he retorted that:

“If lawyers don’t want to represent me in court anymore, no problem. It is God who knows how I got here. He will set me free. Are those lawyers God? Lawyers that could not tell the judge not to take me to prison, despite how many they were. They were up to 10. In their presence, the judge ordered my detention in prison. Are those ones lawyers? Those who could not remove handcuffs from my hands until Falola came to do so. Are they lawyers? And they collected huge amount of money. Five million, four million, three million (Naira), that was how they were paid; yet they couldn’t remove handcuffs from my hands. I don’t fear any lawyer or anybody. Anything they want to do to me, I’m ready.

“I don’t need any information from Salami. Anything they want to do, they should go ahead. If he is on phone, he should hear me. I don’t need any information from anyone. I need information from God. I told my wife the last time she came here that I don’t need any information from anyone. The information that nobody has been able to get to secure my release from here, God should give me.”

Igboho was arrested at a Cotonou airport on his way to Germany on June 20, three weeks after the invasion of his house by the DSS.

He has since been detained in a Beninese prison indefinitely for allegedly committing a crime in the French-speaking country.

A Kenyan elderly woman, Margaret Wanjiru, 65, has beheaded her husband John Ndung’u, 99, on Sunday morning after a domestic quarrel.
