Police arrest pro-Biafra member over sit-at-home plot in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested one Friday Obeta, a member of the Movement for Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra, for planning to enforce the May 30 sit-at-home declared by the pro-Biafran group.

Recall that the pro-Biafran group had reportedly declared May 30 as a sit-at-home across the South-East, to honour its heroes who died during the civil war of 1967-1970.

The spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the arrest of the 37-year-old suspect in a press statement he released on Wednesday, adding that one motorcycle, a branded t-shirt and an operational identification card of the proscribed organisation were recovered from the suspect.

Ikenga said operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Nnewi Sector, arrested the suspect based on intelligence gathering on how he and his gang members had set out plans to enforce the sit-at-home.

The statement said, “Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Nnewi Sector, acting on credible information on how the proscribed Movement for Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra has set out plans to enforce sit-at-home on May 30, 2025, arrested one Friday Obeta aged 37 years and recovered one motorcycle, a branded t-shirt and an operational identification card of the proscribed organisation.

“The suspect confessed to being a member and an informant for the proscribed group and has made useful information that is aiding the investigation for the possible arrest of other gang members.

“To this end, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, charged the operatives to intensify their onslaught operations, given the suspect’s confessions.

“He further urged them to step up surveillance operations to thwart any unlawful gathering in the state.”

Natasha’s lawyers allege bias over unaddressed petitions 28th May 2025

The legal team representing Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan on Wednesday raised the alarm over what it described as a disturbing pattern of selective justice, following the Federal Government’s decision to file criminal charges against her despite multiple unresolved petitions she lodged earlier this year.

In a statement released by her counsel, Uju Nwoduwu, the team outlined 12 petitions submitted by the senator between March and May 2025.

The petitions reportedly detail allegations including cyberstalking, defamation, threats to life, and an alleged assassination attempt.

According to the legal team, none of these complaints have been acted upon by the Nigeria Police Force or any relevant security agency.

“There is a legitimate public expectation that law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies uphold the principles of fairness, due process, and equal justice—regardless of who is involved,” the statement said.

The lawyers further expressed concern that while Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petitions remain unattended, counter-allegations filed by those she accused—including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello—have been swiftly pursued, leading to criminal charges against her.

“This glaring disparity raises serious concerns about a biased and uneven application of justice,” the statement continued.

Some of the petitions, they added, involve high-ranking officials and incidents as grave as the abduction and attempted assassination of a protocol officer.

Though currently abroad on personal engagements, Akpoti-Uduaghan has acknowledged receipt of official communication regarding the charges and has pledged to make herself available for arraignment as soon as a date is set.

“She remains resolute in her commitment to due process,” the legal team affirmed, while also thanking members of the public who have voiced concern over what they called “an extraordinarily questionable criminal charge.”

The statement concluded with a renewed appeal for impartial investigations into all outstanding petitions and a call for justice to be applied equally, without fear or favour.

One of the athletes representing Ogun State also confirmed to PUNCH Online that they had held a meeting over the protest last night and proceeded with their plans this morning.

According to him, they were yet to be paid and do not know how much the state would pay them in terms of allowances.

Before the start of the sports festival, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, pledged a cash reward of N2.5m for every gold medallist from the state, N1.5m for silver and N1m for bronze medallists.

The state is third on the medals table with 48 gold, 38 silver and 47 bronze medals.

PUNCH Online is still awaiting the reaction of the Ogun State Commissioner of Sports, Wasiu Isiaka, as of the time of filing this story.

Fakayode said, “This gesture of our referred first class Oba has demonstrated his love for tradition and Yoruba culture and spirituality.

Schools shut as diphtheria outbreak claims lives in Imo community

A diphtheria outbreak in Mbutu Community, Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, has led to the deaths of several children, prompting an immediate closure of schools in the area.

The exact number of fatalities remains unconfirmed, Daily Trust reports on Wednesday.

The Chairman of Aboh Mbaise LGA, Iheukwumere Alaribe, confirmed the development in a statement issued on May 26, 2025.

Diphtheria, a highly infectious disease caused by the toxin-producing bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae, primarily affects the nose and throat but can also impact the skin.

It spreads through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, or via direct contact with infected individuals or contaminated objects.

In response to the outbreak, the local government has taken swift action to curb further spread.

Schools in Mbutu have been temporarily closed, and parents have been advised to keep their children indoors.

“Diphtheria claimed the lives of the children less than a week after its outbreak.

“The chairman stated that the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Department of Disease Prevention and Control in the Imo State Ministry of Health, and health workers from Aboh Mbaise LGA were working tirelessly to investigate and contain the outbreak.

“An isolation centre has been established at Mbutu Health Centre, with health workers deployed to quarantine children who may have been exposed to the disease and to provide care for affected families,” said Godspower Dike, the spokesman for the chairman.

Alaribe also urged parents to take urgent steps to vaccinate their children.

“In light of this outbreak, parents who have not yet vaccinated their children are strongly urged to do so without delay.

“Vaccinations are crucial for preventing the spread of diseases and protecting our children’s health,” he stated.

The chairman’s spokesman, Dike, appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate with health authorities.

“We encourage the public to remain calm and cooperate with the relevant authorities as we work to control this outbreak. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” he added

In the first week of May, the disease killed two children in the Tukur-Tukur community of Zaria, Kaduna State.

Diphtheria is a vaccine-preventable disease.

Health authorities have reiterated the importance of routine immunisation to protect children from preventable diseases like diphtheria.

Nigeria has recorded 25,812 confirmed cases of diphtheria out of 42,642 suspected cases across 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and 350 local government areas, with confirmed cases spread across 184 LGAs in 26 states.

PUNCH Online reported that as of March 9, 2025, the outbreak has led to 1,319 deaths, according to the latest situation report from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, covering the period from week 19 of 2022 to week 10 of 2025.

Scandal-hit judge steps down from Maradona death trial 28th

A key judge in the trial of late Argentine football superstar Diego Maradona’s medical team stepped down on Tuesday, amid a scandal that has thrown the future of the high-profile case into doubt.

Julieta Makintach, dubbed the “judge of god,” recused herself after it emerged she had been shooting a racy miniseries about the months-old trial, potentially breaking a string of ethics rules.

Maradona died in November 2020, at age 60, while recovering from brain surgery.

His seven-person medical team is on trial over the conditions of his home convalescence, described by prosecutors as grossly negligent.

After a series of police raids and a one-week suspension of the case, 47-year-old Makintach was on Tuesday accused of violating her impartiality, of influence peddling and even bribery over her role in the documentary miniseries “Divine Justice.”

A trailer for the feature was played in court showing Makintach stalking the halls of justice in high heels as grim details of the footballing legend’s demise were relayed.

According to a script, the miniseries would follow Makintach as she “reconstructs the death of Maradona and certain painful milestones of his life related to abandonment.”

Footage appeared to contain unauthorised recordings allegedly made inside the courtroom, a violation of court rules.

Tuesday’s hearing was marked by insults, recriminations, shouting and tears.

In a bitter exchange, prosecutor Patricio Ferrari accused Makintach of behaving “like an actress and not a judge.”

As the trailer was played, defense lawyer Rodolfo Baque jumped out of his chair to shout “trash!” at the judge.

Daughter Gianinna Maradona tried to calm him, before she and Maradona’s former partner, Veronica Ojeda, both began sobbing uncontrollably.

Makintach sat with her head bowed, biting her lip and eventually said she had “no choice” but to recuse herself as one of the case’s three justices.

– ‘Dark, ugly and lonely’ –

Her removal is an embarrassment for Argentina’s judicial system and could yet derail a trial being watched by football diehards around the globe.

Maradona — considered one of the world’s greatest ever players — died of heart failure and acute pulmonary edema.

Those responsible for his medical care face prison terms between eight and 25 years if convicted of homicide with possible intent.

The charges relate to their decision to allow him to recover from major surgery at home, and the conditions of his care.

Gianinna Maradona has claimed her father was kept in “a dark, ugly and lonely” place and that his carers were more interested in money than his welfare.

The court will decide on Thursday whether the trial will go ahead or be scrapped and then restarted.

Some of the plaintiffs have called for a new trial, saying they felt proceedings have been tainted by scandal.

“Everyone now feels that this is compromised,” said Mario Baudry, the lawyer for Maradona’s ex-partner Ojeda.

“It’s healthiest to start over from scratch,” he added.

Chiderije Mbah Wins One Day MD/CEO Of Wema Bank PL

… Set To Run The Bank’s Affairs For 24 Hours In An Unforgettable Children’s Day Experience

In a heartfelt celebration of 2025 Children’s Day, Wema Bank, Nigeria’s most innovative bank and pioneer of Africa’s first fully digital bank, ALAT, has unveiled 12-year-old Chiderije Mbah as its One-Day Managing Director/CEO for May 27, 2025, as part of a special initiative aimed at nurturing the next generation of Nigerian leaders. The memorable experience, which took place today, at the bank’s headquarters in Lagos, Marina, spotlighted Wema Bank’s ongoing commitment to investing in the future even as it marks 80 remarkable years of legacy and impact.

Chiderije Mbah became the winner of the One-Day Wema Bank MD/CEO initiative launched in May 2025, to mark this year’s Children’s Day celebration. He was chosen after sharing a spirited video explaining his dream of leading a bank and his vision for making finance more fun and accessible for children. His entry, submitted through a social media challenge, stood out among dozens who applied to be in the position.

The One-Day Wema Bank MD/CEO was the high point of a broader Children’s Day initiative by Wema Bank, which invited children across the country to participate in an online challenge. To qualify, children were asked to post a short video dressed in Wema colours and share the banking role they aspired to, while either holding or opening a Royal Kiddies Account (for ages 0–12) or an ALAT Xplore Wallet (for teenagers 13–17). The campaign blended fun with purpose, introducing thousands of young Nigerians to early financial education and the power of dreaming big.

On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Chiderije stepped into the spotlight at Wema Bank’s Lagos Headquarters, receiving a purple-carpet welcome and taking his seat at the helm of the bank for a day packed with leadership, learning, and excitement. Enjoying a full day of activities; from a guided tour of the head office to holding his own executive briefing session in the boardroom, he will also be addressing senior executives of the bank.

“This is the best day of my life,” said Chiderije Mbah. “Wema Bank made me feel important. I am learning so much about being a leader and how banking works. I’ll tell all my friends to open a Wema Bank Royal Kiddies Account so they can also start learning how to save and maybe one day, they can be MD too!”

Speaking on the initiative, Wema Bank’s Managing Director/CEO, Moruf Oseni, said,

“Our 80th anniversary is a time to reflect on where we’ve been and where we’re going, knowing fully well that the future belongs to the young stars like Chiderije. Today’s activity is one of our ways of showing that we believe in the children, that we’re listening, and that we’re committed to helping them succeed financially, personally, and professionally all the way.”

This unforgettable experience reinforces Wema Bank’s vision of a future-ready Nigeria; one where financial inclusion starts early, and every child has access to tools, inspiration, and opportunities to thrive. As Wema bank celebrates eight decades of resilience and innovation, its gaze remains firmly fixed on the horizon, championing the dreams of tomorrow’s leaders, one child at a time.

PDP vows to resist APC’s ‘one-party totalitarian’ agenda

The Peoples Democratic Party has asked President Bola Tinubu to reverse all his anti-people policies, vowing that it won’t bow to intimidation by the Federal Government.

This was stated in the communiqué of the PDP’s 99th National Executive Committee meeting, read by Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, during the session held in Abuja on Tuesday.

While reading the NEC communiqué, Damagum joined by other members of the PDP National Working Committee stated that the party’s leadership expressed deep concern over the dire and troubling condition of the nation under President Tinubu’s administration.

According to Damagum, the PDP NEC described Tinubu’s administration as hopelessly exploitative, insensitive, and opposed to the interests of the people.

Damagum said, “NEC condemns the worsening insecurity; the wanton killings, banditry, kidnapping, marauding of communities and other acts of terrorism in various parts of our country, emboldened by President Tinubu’s apparent negligence and abdication of his Constitutional duty to ensure the safety and security of the nation and her citizens.

“NEC also laments the worsening economic hardship and extreme poverty in the country occasioned by the ill-advised and ill-implemented polices of the Tinubu administration; hike in fuel price, wanton increase in electricity tariff, multiple taxes and unexplained charges on services, resulting in collapse of the productive sector, closure of millions of businesses, massive loss of jobs, rise in criminality and general sense of misery across the country.

“NEC condemns the policy inconsistency, wholesale corruption, massive treasury-looting, budget padding and diversion of public funds that pervade the Tinubu administration resulting in infrastructural retrogression and loss of investors’ confidence in our system.

“NEC restates the PDP demand that President Tinubu administration should rescind all its anti-people policies and take practical steps to address the insecurity and economic recession in the country.”

Damagum remarked that Tinubu’s administration is making deliberate efforts to turn Nigeria into a one-party state due to fears of the APC’s likely defeat in the 2027 elections.

He stated, “NEC stands in firm resistance to the sinister plot by the Tinubu-led APC to turn Nigeria into a one-Party totalitarian state as evidenced in the desperate attempts to stifle and annihilate opposition parties through open siege, threats and intimidation of opposition figures and institutions of democracy in Nigeria.

“It is clear that this plot is borne out of APC’s mortal fear of inevitable defeat in 2027 due to its dismal failure in government.”

In his earlier remarks, the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, accused the Federal Government of using intimidation and exclusion tactics, pledging to oppose such actions and stay committed to upholding good governance.

Mohammed disclosed that the PDP has experienced defections and coalition discussions affecting some members, but he stressed that the party remains united and determined to fulfill its mandate.

He stated, “Despite these pressures, our members remain steadfast and unwavering. There is no form of intimidation or persuasion that we, as elected governors and members, have not encountered. Yet, we remain resolute in our commitment.”

Children’s Day: Aiyedatiwa urges collective action against bullying in Ondo

The Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has called on all stakeholders to join hands and work against all forms of abuse of children, most especially bullying in the society.

Aiyedatiwa, who described bullying as a form of aggressive behaviour where someone intentionally harms, intimidates or humiliates another person repeatedly, said all hands must be on deck to protect the rights of the children.

The governor stated this at the 2025 edition of the National Children’s Day celebration, held in Akure, the state capital, on Tuesday.

Speaking on the theme of the celebration, ‘Stand up, speak up – building a bullying-free generation’, the governor explained that bullying could be physical, verbal or social and it leaves lasting harm.

He noted that children who were bullied may suffer emotionally, physically and academically which could lead to anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, sleep disturbances and even social isolation.

Aiyedatiwa said, “Our children deserve better. They need our protection from all forms of harassment, exploitation and abuse. To build a bullying-free generation, we must act collectively and decisively. We must build a society free from oppression, injustice and inhumane treatment. We must build a generation of young people who are bold, resilient and confident. A generation that knows their rights and is not afraid to stand up for what is right, not just for themselves but for their peers as well.

“This is how we build a truly inclusive and safe society. All hands must therefore be on deck – parents, teachers, school administrators, religious bodies, traditional institutions, associations and government at all levels must play their part. And so must our children, who must be encouraged to speak up and support one another. We must instil empathy and kindness in our children.

“When we put ourselves in others’ shoes, we can build stronger relationships and more caring communities. Education is key to preventing bullying. We must raise awareness about its harmful effects and promote positive behaviour in all learning environments. We must also build robust support systems for victims: counselling, mentoring and safe spaces must be readily available. Moreover, we must empower bystanders to become upstanders – those who do not remain silent but act when they see something wrong.

“As a government, we remain unwavering in our commitment to child protection policies, school safety initiatives and programmes that promote mental and emotional health in our schools and communities. By the special grace of God, the government of Ondo State shall continue to prioritise the welfare of our children through our various initiatives, including payment of WAEC fees for secondary school students and the renovation of public schools across the State. We have also recruited over two thousand teachers for public secondary and primary schools to improve the standard of education in the state.”

Corroborating Aiyedatiwa, the Special Adviser to the governor on Women Affairs, Seun Osamaye, called on all stakeholders to take action against bullying among the children in schools and other areas.

“National Children’s Day is a significant National event that affords us the opportunity of celebrating our children by networking and also advocating for social welfare and rights in society. It is a day set aside to recognise, honour, celebrate and appreciate our children. It was established to promote international awareness, Unity, love among children worldwide, and to improve their welfare.

“This year’s theme, ‘Stand up, speak up; building a bullying-free generation’, is apt and timely as it addresses critical issues in school settings and calls on us all to take action against bullying among children and young adults, empowering our children to speak up through advocacy and confidence building.

Eto’o, Adebayor, Okocha play peace match in Somalia

Three African football legends – Samuel Eto’o, Emmanuel Adebayor and Jay-Jay Okocha – took to the pitch in Somalia on Tuesday for an exhibition match aimed at restoring the country’s image.

The three superstars were part of a FIFA-backed “peace tour” that Somalia hopes will help it once again host international fixtures.

Somalia has been in a state of near-constant internal conflict since 1991, and its national team has had to play matches mostly in neighbouring Djibouti.

The national stadium in Mogadishu, the capital, was heavily damaged after being used as a base by Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab insurgents from 2008 and then by African Union peacekeepers who chased them out of the city.

It was renovated and reopened for sports in 2020.

The arrival of Cameroon icon Eto’o, former Togo striker Adebayor and ex-Nigeria playmaker Okocha for what was billed as the first high-profile match in three decades was labelled “a historic day” by the sports ministry.

The three stars led an international team to an 8-4 victory against a team of local players.

“We just pray for God to give you guys peace, so that you can build your country,” Adebayor told reporters after the match, adding that the occasion was “beautiful and incredible”.

Security Minister Mohamed Ali Haga described the match as a chance to “change the perception of the world towards Somalia… and show the world that Mogadishu is peaceful and can host other African matches”.

Security was tight around the stadium in southern Mogadishu.

Hundreds of fans showed up hours in advance of the match, many waving the Somali flag.

“This is a great day for me — to watch a player like Eto’o who has inspired me so much — I cannot miss such a great occasion. It is like I’m seated in the Barcelona stadium,” one fan, Mowlid Ali, told AFP.

“The game here today is not a simple football match. This match will definitely demonstrate how Somalia is reviving from the war that has ravaged the country for a long time,” added another, Abdirahman Dhere.

Somalia has reportedly asked FIFA and Confederation of African Football to re-evaluate its security situation to be able to hold future fixtures.

Delegates from the CAF and Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations were present for the match.
